Extreme Veteran 346 Lafayette, IN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Funny how every aspect of your life revolves around training. My 8 year old daughter really wants a digital camera for Christmas. I was planning on getting one for her and just getting something fairly cheap since I am not sure it won't get broken in the first week it is owned. We are looking at the different camera's at the store and she sees one that can go underwater. She looks at me and says, "Dad, if you get me this one, I can film you swimming underwater!" Of course the price of this camera was double what I wanted to spend. Which camera do you think she is getting? I might be more excited about the camera then she is. |

Expert 1128 Fort Riley, Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Oh....speaking of videos, I made a video/slideshow of my 13 month journey from a morbidly obese 286 pound woman to triathlete and marathon runner, the video is on my blog. Yes, I did have gastric bypass, but I assure you I did not take the "easy way out". I made the choice after years of trying to lose the weight and watching life pass me by. I was 26 years old, but felt 56. The more weight I dropped, the more I bumped up my training. I an thankful everyday for the gift I was given. |

Regular 61 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread My wife and I did RAIN this year before IMLOU and had a lot of fun. It was (and still is) the longest ride I have ever done (I believe 161 miles by my computer), and it was a great confidence booster for IMLOU knowing I could go that long and still feel relatively good at the end. I think it took around 9 hours including all my stops for food and water (about 8 hours in the saddle). In terms of support, bring your own. They have designated stop areas, but I am pretty sure there is nothing provided at those stops other than a place for your support vehicle to meet you and a large crowd to encourage you. I tentatively plan on doing it again as long as the coach thinks it is a good idea. Hit me up if you have any more questions. |

Steven, I hope you like what you see. You will find that I did some editing, but it is so minor that you might not even notice. Good answers. Those of you who participate later, I may send you alternate questions when it gets to the silly questions, so I may be asking you for 3-4 more questions...these are often the more fun ones to answer anyway. Regular 61 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Okay, I am back from my week-long snowboarding excursion to NY. If you have never done skiing or snowboarding for 8 hours/day on back to back to back days, let me assure you it is an intense workout. My quads have never burned so bad! My injury problems seem to be getting better and I am close to officially starting my training. I have no race plans yet this year other than IMLOU, but that is typical. I rarely sign up for a race before the last minute, that's just the type of guy I am. There has been a lot of talk on this forum about bi-lateral breathing and I thought I would offer my two cents as a former 5-time NCAA II All-American swimmer (breastroke, sprint freestyle and IM). I have found bi-lateral breathing to be an invaluable tool for forcing me to balance out my stroke and encouraging proper hip rotation, but I almost exclusively use one-sided (right side) breathing every two technique unless I am drilling. As others have mentioned it is useful to be able to switch sides to avoid waves and also to sight off landmarks (at IMLOU the closest shore will always be on the left), but it is most important for you to be comfortable and relaxed on race day. I find I have a better rhythm and tempo when I breathe every two, so that's what I do. It's true that breathing slows you down a little, which is why I never breathed on a 50 freestyle sprint, but unless you are worried about shaving a few tenths of a second off your time that is the least of your worries in the Ironman. Use the bilateral breathing as a training tool and learn to balance out my stroke, then do whatever feels most comfortable and efficient on race day. I actually did breathe bilaterally for about 15 minutes of my 55 minute swim at IMLOU because I was having trouble getting into a good rhythm, but once I "found my stroke" I went back to mostly right sided breathing. For those of you who feel like you are getting less oxygen while bi-lateral breathing, make sure you aren't holding your breath between breaths, always blow out at least a little. When you hold your breathe your body freaks out and believes you are drowning so it takes oxygen away from your "less important" muscles (legs & arms) to conserve it for your more important muscles (brain and heart). At least, that is what my physiology teacher told me in college . Also, as someone else mentioned, make sure you expel all your breath before bringing your mouth out of the water so you can spend all that time breathing in. -TriSam, I liked your videos and must say you looked 800% better when you were doing your fingertip drag drill! I use that drill every day in warm up because it is so good at creating a proper recovery. You might also try the zipper drill to clean it up even more (drag your thumb or fingertips up your side to your arm pit on each stroke, actually touching your side as you go). You may think you can't get any faster, but I garauntee the efficiency improvements will make you markedly faster over distance if you stick with it. |

Expert 668 Lancaster, PA | Subject: My Newby Notes I wrote this a week after doing Louisville this year. By no means I am an expert but here is what I mostly sought out there during the training and preparing for my first Ironman race: 1. Follow the Plan! - what ever training plan you will be following, do it!- try to stick to it as much as you can. I was changing mine constantly due to scheduling but I tried my best to keep up with it. 2. Practice your nutrition - Get your body used to what you will be eating and drinking during race day. You don't want any surprises during race day and for sure have any GI issues that may lead to a DNF. I know someone that tried something new during race day, and his body shut down after 80 miles on the bike- you don't want to throw it away. Everybody is different as far as nutrition goes, you need to find out what works for you. 3. BEGIN NOW!!!!! If you have more than one weakness (swim, bike, run) - start now! join a masters swimming program, get a swimming coach, attend swimming clinics- get help! - I learned a lot by watching you-tube videos. I also sent some swimming clips to a swim coach and he answered via the web.The same goes for biking and running. You want to add some muscle to your frame in the off season because once training begins and if you don't incorporate weight training, you will lose muscle mass. Off season weight training is great for adding strenght to your upper and lower body. If you are afraid of the bike course- find hills and then do some more. The best way to discribe the course is go out and do a century ride and when you get done with it, go do another 50 miles in the bike- that is what it felt like when I got off, at least for me. 4. Race List Prep- In this site you will find a few race day checklists - choose one or combine a couple of them but what I found and made it easy for me was that I went through each checklist for the swim, T1, bike, t2,run, and bike/ run special needs bag and put them in a grocery bag- labeled them. Now, I checked them twice at home before leaving so when it was time for me to fill the actual bags, all I did was take the correct bag and match them with the bag they give you at registration. It made it easy, I put it in the bag and I did not have to worry about it. 5. Get your Bike properly fit! You want to have a properly fitted bike to your body/specs- and your day will be much easier. 6. Don't Eat the Paste - A must read article for any beginner and experienced ones too! (some of the guys I chatted during the race - some had 4 or 5 Ironman races under their belt). This guy told me he had the best bike split in his age group- he told me his time which was 1h30m hrs better than mine but yet I passed him before I hit the half way mark on the run. When he told me that, I immediately thought of the article - actually I had it in my mind all day. 7. Enjoy the Moment - Even though is a long day as far as time goes, time does fly- so enjoy every moment you have- smile- smile, say thank you to all the wonderful volunteers, stop and give your support crew a hug and a kiss, high five your friends. Enjoy the moment because the next day will only be a memory. 8. The Line Somewhere along the race you will hit a point where you don't want to do this anymore, thoughts of quitting, giving up, or you are hurting bad enough that those thoughts will cross your mind. You need to be mentally prepared and be ready and know that there will be moments that you will be in pain, muscles might be cramping, feeling nausceaus, you will be talking to yourself, dig deep and keep pushing through, etc. Remember- do not quit during your training- you are builiding upon it; keep pluging along and great things will come on the long run. 9. Motivation- You will do this! along the way you will need some motivation - you tube videos are great- also- if you can train with a group- even better because training can be lonely and boring at times. Also, staying plugged in with an online support group and other tirathles helps you stay motivated (i.e - , this one hereat beginnertri.com, iamtri.com, etc.) 10. You have to own it how bad do you really want it? you have to own it and want it and the desire, fire , and motivation will be there. For what is worth and my $.02, Thomas |

Sam, what was wrong with your achilles? how long have you been not running? Just wondering. I had some tendonitis a while ago and was out for quite a few weeks. When I returned to run I felt similar pain which I also thought was in my head. Currently, I have a pain in my foot which isn't a SF but might as well be :-( I'm starting to miss the running. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Carrie- I am hopefully on the backend of Achilles Tendonitis. I took from ealry October until late December off after it became obvious that training at the level I was for an upcoming 1/2 marathon was a bad idea. I was icing, and massaging it, etc, but it wasn't enough. I didn't start the 1/2 marathon and stuck to treating the injury. I've had Achilles Tendonitis before, as well as a stress fracture in my foot and I'm aware of how each feels, so I'm confident about what I'm dealing with. Having said that, I'm sorry you are having foot pain. Did a doctor determine you did not have a stress fracture? Did you have an MRI? An x-ray does not usually pick up stress fractures. Where is the pain in your foot? Everyone- I've now received seven interviews and I am finding them all fascinating. (Fred just got yours). Thanks again. I hope you enjoy reading about your fellow BT'ers. OH...Stacie...just got yours! Thanks. Day off today and I feel like a slug. Peace, ~Sam |
