ironannekidd - 2010-12-07 9:45 AM So my doctors office just called. I am a mutant. I hope I am like Storm and can control the weather because my kids REALLY want snow for Christmas.

They told me I have hemochromatosis. She said it won't be a problem unless my iron is high. I told her that my iron WAS high on the blood test they just did. She said she'd talk to the doctor and get back to me. Thanks.

I thought you knew you had hemochromatosis? Someone asked about it on here way back in the day...

Did we talk about that before? I don't remember it. I know I had blood tests done awhile back, but nothing ever came from them, and I didn't have the gene study before that I knew of. I was just reading about it, and it may explain the problems I've been having with my heart.

Ah ic. Ya we talked about it a bit. Katie was around then.

I do remember Katie being around the last time I had blood tests. I don't remember what she said though. From what I read quick online it looks like it's something that gets diagnosed in men, and older women. How lucky am I to get diagnosed with another old lady disease?I guess it could have played a part in why I diagnosed osteoarthritis in my spine at such an early age.

Sounds like you need to hang around some vampires.  MedlinePlus says the common treatment is to remove some blood.

Seriously, I hope that you and your doctors can get a handle on this so that you can feel better.

This talks about nutrition.  What foods help you to absorb iron and which ones impair absorbtion.

Thanks Kendra. I used to give blood all the time. I haven't given in about a year and a half. Guess it's time to find a blood drive.

Ya. Phlebotomy is pretty much the gold standard rx for hemochromatosis. Not only the heart problems, but might help to explain the arthritis symptoms as well--iron deposits in joint spaces, etc. The liver is the big concern because iron gets deposited there and can end up damaging the tissue in later stage disease.

I think hemochromatosis is also called "bronze diabetes"...because your skin takes on a tanned look and iron can deposit in the pancreas and disrupt insulin and glucagon production...I think...I'm trying to remember what else bronze diabetes could have been...but I am pretty sure it is that.

Yeah, I have arthritis in my lower spine, my neck, both hands and wrists, and I suspect my knees. I did read that alcohol should be avoided or used in moderation, we will see about that.

Melissa I've read a few places that say I should avoid raw shellfish. Not only eating it, but touching it at all. Why would that be?

alcohol: probably because of the liver effects more than anything to do with iron

arthritis: hands and fingers is really, really common with HC. I read a case study of a long distance runner who all of a sudden had this debilitating knee pain he though was arthritis. He had the tanning and eventually was dx. with HC. Once he started phlebotomy symtoms got better.

shellfish: only thing I can think of is higher concentration of toxins maybe? again, I would think more to do with the liver than the iron? Not sure though

Ann, it seems to me there's a thread somewhere in the health topics forum on HC. If I remeber correctly, there's several other BT'ers who have it. I'm sorry. That is sucktastic, but at least you know something, and can try different avenues. just think, it's better than being otoally in the dark. At least you have a direction to try first.

For the record Melindy was right. Last January we talked about the hemochromatosis, and Katie did chime in. My doc suspected it then, but I never had the gene mutation study done. She did that this time. I couldn't give blooc back then, but I can now.

I'm having a nap before swim practice. I like Tues/Thurs...I don't have mandatory sessions so I don't need to go to school. I am way more productive. I did all 4 lectures, ran, watched some TV, did some emailing and get to have a nap.

I am doing a happy dance!!!! My hubby is coming home right NOW!!! Yay! he's been in Charlotte since last Monday, and he was originally scheduled to come home earlier tonight, but they were having issues with the plant and getting samples to test, so, yeah. He wasn't going to come home until Thursday. (Thus the funk I was in yesterday. That's when I found out he wouldn't be home as scheduled). He called a couple hours ago to ask if I would pick him up at the airport at 11:50 tonight!!!!! Yay!!! Apparently they someow melted a necessary piece of lab equipment with the bath heater. Aw shucks, huh?

Hooray!!! I'm goin' to pick up my hubby!!! His flight lands in a half hour. *happy dance

Did I mention I'm excited about this???  Cool

I had a staff meeting yesterday. As usual, that means a ton of work today.
That and planning a get together with some friends this weekend.

You, Ironlady?
