Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSEDcarrie639 - 2011-01-08 10:06 PM Queston on training plans: I finally signed up for a plan and noticed that all the longest bike rides are on Saturdays followed by long runs on Sundays. I thought you were always supposed to do the long runs Saturday and the long bike Sundays because you are more likely to injure yourself Sunday running on tired legs from Saturday?????
HELP . . . last thing I need is more injuries. There are several training theories with regard to long bikes / long runs. The theory you have is that you should ride long on Saturday so that you feel the ride in your legs when you run on Sunday (i.e. you're running on tired legs ). I also follow this theory, when training for a HIM last fall, I would ride for 4-5 hours on Saturday and then do a brick run of :45 minutes. On Sunday I would ride intervals for :90 and then do a long run of 90-120 minutes. It works for me. As a corollary to this theory some coached advocate long runs on Saturday and long rides on Sunday -- so while you're not running on tired legs your feeling the cumulative effect of long training sessions. Another theory is to completely separate the long bike and long run. The way I've seen this theory scheduled is to do a long run on Thursday and a long bike on Sunday. The theory is that you what both the long bike and the long run to be "high quality" and on "fresh legs" so you space them as far apart as possible. Just like with training plans there is no right way or wrong way, just the way that works best for you and allows you to training consistently. I would try executing the plan the way its written and if you're having problems with the long runs, switch them. Also, because you're recovering from injury, you may want to look into water running as an alternative until you're healed. |
