We did the 100 push-up challenge as well in my group last year. It died a slow death. Not really any benefit for our specific training but it was an interesting challenge.  100 crunches now that would help us......

Well, I sorta fell off the face of the forum My hubby is in town visiting and the weather is dreadful. I did get a run in over the weekend, but I am slacking!!! The roads are pretty bad still today, so not sure if I'll make the 20mi drive to swim tonight. If i had snowshoes I think I'd try for an outside trek today (with a high around 0 f) , but alas no snowshoes and too much snow to even think about running by this weekend though, maybe it will clear up enough.  OHHHH WINTER WOES!

Dirk, I really cannot offer any injury advice, I am pretty new to this kind of training and I have not had any issues so far (knock on wood) that being said, I'd say "go with your gut" better safe then sorry so this is a good time of year to look into PT and other recovery. Good luck to you, keep us informed.

Samantha, same to you, this is a good time of year to work on PT for that issue and build strength for the upcoming season.

I have never heard of the 100 pushup challenge, but most days I try to do 100 pushups throughout the day (sets of 15 or 25) I do think they are the magic exercise, working 95% of your body during each proper execusion. And for us girls it is a magic push up wink wink. I started this about a year ago, I had to start with sets of 10 girlie style (on the knees) and would slowly work up to 25. Eventually moving up to "real" push ups.  Next I want to get a pull up bar and maybe, just maybe, one day I'll be able to do A pull up lol.

I did the 100 pushup challenge last year but, apart from the odd time here or there, I haven't done any since as I don't feel it is of any benefit. It took me 4 weeks to build up to the full 100 (started on week 3, but had to repeat week 6)

Well, I would not see doing 100 push-ups as pointless, or soley for bragging rights, if that is what I wanted to do.  If my goal was to do 100 push-ups, it would be for the sense of accomplishment, not necessarily so I could tell the world that I've done 100.  I think one of the reason I like triathlons is because it feels good to accomplish a goal that I've set out for myself.  So, while the 100 push-up challenge may not be for everyone (I had never heard of it before), I would not say that there is no benefit.  For the individual who chooses to do it, there will be mental benefits reaped.

This kind of reminds me of a thread in Tri Talk from a few weeks ago.  There was a guy who wanted to run 100 miles in one week for the sake of running 100 miles in a week.  Take out the injury potential factor (it could be argued that he was not prepared for it, but he had been doing some decent running), and there were people saying it's stupid to do (basically), there is no point to it, it's only for bragging rights, etc.  To me, it was pretty clear from his posts that he was not doing it for any other reason but for *himself,* not bragging rights or any other feeling.  It was really for that sense of accomplishment.

Thinking about an extra run just to warm up.  I'm SOOOOO tired of being cold.  Someone please send some warm air this way.

Question:  If you could move ANYWHERE in the world, where would it be and why?  Money's not a factor in this fantasy.

I would be in the swimming pool.

I am really frustrated right now because of my shoulder.  I have figured out I have a pretty decent muscle strain and the snow I have shoveled over the past couple of weeks has not helped the mending process.  I am going to take another week off swimming to allow for some healing and see how it feels after that.  BUT, right now I am very irritated that I can't swim.  I have done a lot of work to get into a good pattern and now I can't/won't swim for concerns that the injury could get worse.

I got my long bike in today already and now I have a 5k race I am planning to try to PR.  I am not sure I will expect much with a 9 mile run yesterday and 1.5 hour bike finished a few minutes ago.  The race is at 2:00 and I am racing with some friends or should I say we will start but finish at much different times.

I'll report on my success/failure to PR after the race.

I can't do it!!!  Sorry ladies, I cannot watch chick flicks all night with my family of girls.  I am diving into my triathlon world here on BT.  My man cave of sorts, I guess.  I don't even know what movie they are watching but I tried to watch some of it with them and it got too sappy.

I finished my day of training and racing.  33 miles on the bike and a 5k race done.  My weekend has a couple of more workouts tomorrow and I hope to be able to get my run in tomorrow morning.  I have a lot to do tomorrow after noon including a 1 hour ride.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend and the training is going well.

BTW, someone needs to ask a question.  Stir up some conversation.

Pretty funny stuff.  I and my daughters were talking about this "big deal" today and we spent a fair amount of time laughing about how dumb the whole thing is.  I am so glad we can make the country laugh.........someone needs to.

How did your 5K go, Dirk???  Did you treat this as kind of like a hard training run? (what with the running and biking you did prior.)

Question:  What do I need to take with me on race day?  Is there a checklist on this website?  Do you have your own that you could share?

What's everyone been up to this weekend? I did some lifting yesterday morning and a run in the afternoon.  The weather is finally starting to warm up a bit (upper 30s).  My left rotator cuff is bothering me a little--injured it a couple years ago. It's always something :-

It went pretty good all things considered.  The 9 mile run and 1.5 hr bike definitely took it's toll.  I knew during the warm up that I wasn't going to PR, my legs were to much like jello to have a lot left.  I did come kind of close according to my watch but I wouldn't qualify the watch time as a PR anyway.  My Garmin says I ran in 21:22 with my PR at 21 flat.

The start of the race was a gun start with a timing chip for the finish.  I started the race with a friend in the middle of the pack, on a narrow stretch of trail that wasn't realy conducive to easy passing at the beginning of the race.  I pretty much ditched my friend at the gun and he finished about 5 minutes after me.  This was a fairly flat course as opposed to the one I have my current PR on.  I am still waiting on the official results before I paste my RR.  i have it done other than I don't know any of the field information.  I'll let you know when the results are in.

As far as the race needs, this can be kind of a personal thing.  I haven't done any sprints so I am not sure how I would fuel for that distance.  I have my own checklist that I have used for Oly's.  I'll post it later I just looked at the clock............Gotta run.

Race Nutrition

Gels (5)

1 gel 15 minutes prior to the race,

 1 gel in T1,

2 gels on bike (if needed)

1 gel at the exit of T2

Sports Drink (2 lg.)

1 bottle to chug as needed in T1

 1 bottle on bike

Water bottles

 1 bottle on bike

Shot Bloks (3)

2 take as needed (in jersey)

During my Oly's I would use this as a guide but went with how I felt during the race.

Below is a list I use to pack things up and get ready for race day.

Swim

Ø Wetsuit

Ø Goggles (2 pair)

Ø 1Gel

T1

 Ø Rubber  Mat (Blanket)

Ø Garmin w/HR Monitor

Bike

Ø Bike

Ø Helmet

Ø Shoes

Ø Sunglasses

Ø Water Bottles/Gatorade

T2

Ø 1 Gel

Run

Ø Shoes

Ø Sunglasses

Ø Race Belt w/Bib

There is a checklist on this site here. As for what you will need on raceday, it's a bit dependant on distance, personal preference and whether it is open water or not.

Jayne... I like making lists.  I scrounged up a list I made from a notebook.  (These were for my sprints.)

-driver's license
-USAT card
-cycling shoes
-BIKE (yes I wrote this also, lube bike)
-helmet
-wetsuit
-safety pins (didn't have a race belt, and although pins are provided, better to be safe)
-hat (...for my first couple, I didn't really care for a hat after my first two or so tri's though...)
-goggles
-bike tool thing (not sure what it's called!)
-bike water bottle (on bike)
-bib*
-chip*
-swim cap* (*these are given at packet pick-up, and I would go to packet pickup early from my local running store since they were the event organizers and it's nearby)
-running shoes
-extra hairtie
-extra t-shirt (post race)

to wear:
cycling shorts
long pants
running shoes (old pair)

also, for one of my triathlons there were predictions being made for thunderstorms, but it ended up sunny, but extra rain stuff:

-lots of socks
-plastic bags (I would have put my transition items in them so I wouldn't be putting on wet shoes, etc)
-extra shorts

...and there may have been a few other things, like perhaps a water bottle to sip on before the race.  Sometimes I would take a gel like 15 minutes before the race as well.  Oh, and because I didn't have a race belt: for a couple races I pinned the bib number to a pair of shorts and slipped them on during T2.  For others I pinned the bib onto my shirt... There are many alternatives for this, and it's highly individual.  You could make it easy on yourself and buy a race belt.  People say it's "cheap"... $6 or so.  (which I don't exactly call cheap, but you know. )

OH yeah, I would also have a towel to quickly wipe off my feet in T1.  Try not to spend too much time in transition.  Try to be quick in, quick out.

My weekend went okay, had my worst run ever had to force myself to keep going, just wasn't into it I guess.  Had an awesome swim Saturday morning!! 1 1/2! yay!  I had a nice run this morning too. Master's swim starts next week and I am excited. I am really thinking about competing in local swim meets, just not totally sold on the idea yet.

I was on the way out the door tonight for my 5 mile run and my wife gets the call that my daughter has a flat tire on the other side of town.  Obviously I canceled my run and helped my daughter but I missed the run.  It was actually kind of fun because I didn't really change the tire, I taught her how to do it for herself.    It wasn't fun because I didn't do anything but because we laughed about it some and messed around a little.  She had never done it before and I needed to know she would be able to take of it the next time if I am not around.

Tonight wasn't a loss because I got to teach my daughter something and spend a little more time with her laughing and joking around.
