Original 1/2/11:
So I have been trying to use my BT training log and to get ideas for how it works and so I have been poking around all of your BT logs and noticed some things that I want to do, some of which I've figured out and some of which I'm confused about. Scott, Jeff, Julie, Cate, & Ellen: I noticed that all of you have a Calories out: ___ From Lifestyle: ___ From Activities: ___  at the bottom of several entries and I can't figure out how you did that. Are you calculating it all that yourselves or did you figure out some way for the log to do it for you? Help!??!? It seems like a really cool thing to know, particularly for those of us trying to loose some weight. Thanks!

Add 1/3/11:
Nevermind - I figured it out! You have to enter your weight and the number of hours that you slept. For some reason it didn't do that for me yesterday, but did this morning!

How did you edit this the following day? When I edit posts I have to do it in 30 minutes or it doesn't let me.

Uh...not sure. There is a good chance though that it was two different days and also within 30 min, since I remember being up late that night.

Pssst, I think she's talking about entering it in her training log, not in the forums. You can *always* edit your training info.

She had posted and later on posted again that she figured it out on the same post. I figured it out though, this forum doesn't have the 30 minute edit rule. I guess that was so we can change from open to closed when the group is full. I still haven't fully gotten the hang of BT.

Threejs - 2011-01-30 4:10 PM I am looking for some advice on purchasing a good tri suit.  Does anyone have any first hand experience they can share with me?
Thanks!

What do you prefer, the one piece suit or the singlet and shorts? I haven't tried on either style but I have a feeling I would prefer the two piece.

I liked both, but singlet and shorts were more comfortable..One note on color I would advise against white because if you swim in a lake it gets dirty very quick..

Thanks for the help! I almost bought a white swim cap the other day and decided against it.
I think a swim cap might be OK, if it's made out of something like latex..... Clothing can be stained by mud and silt pretty easily. But I don't think a latex swim cap will pick up dirt as easily. (Even so, I live in a place that has red clay -- I think it can stain just about EVERYTHING!) A white swim cap (if it stays white) would be really visible though, which is a good thing.....

So maybe a latex tri suit? :D

Thanks
Do you run pretty much at a steady state when you go out? If you do, maybe start adding in some speed intervals and tempo training?

I don't know what your weight status is so this could be completely unhelpful, but I'm finding that as I loose weight running is easier on my knees and so I can go faster.

Just thinking about it now I seem to remember doing intervals and hill sprints (on a really really steep hill) in high school cross country under the guise of going faster.
I remember reading something that said basically, "Hills are speedwork in disguise." And my (few) breakthroughs seem to have come after I concentrated on hills awhile. Here's an article on cadence, too: Using Cadence Properly in Run Training Studies have shown a correlation between pedaling at a high cadence and running at a high cadence, which leads to faster running. The shorter your ground contact time , the less chance for injury. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=...

Great article! One day i will have to test my cadence. I think I'm probably the running equivalent of a masher...
Here's a 'cheap way' to test it..... While you're running, sing the cadence "happily, merrily running along."* (And no, you don't need to sing out loud, unless you want to! LOL) That cadence is supposed to get you close to 180 steps per minute. I know that it made my cadence pick up a lot! * I really wish I remembered where I read that. Because I need to give credit back to the source! I'm thinking that it *might* be Chi Running.....

I like that idea! How fast do I say the words? Do I step to each sylable? Perfect opportunity for a sound clip if you have a mic Dee!

What did you think of the Chi Running book? Any other book recommendations?

It just depends how they set the forum. I knew that you (as Mentor of the group) could edit your posts in this forum. I didn't know that we could do that, also.

But yes, on the other forums, the 30 min rule applies.

I just said it as if I was speaking at a regular pace. And yes, you're supposed to step to each syllable.

No mic. It's better that way. LOL

There were portions of the Chi Running book that I liked. But I am sure that I have NOT 'mastered' the technique! I thought it was worth reading though.

Wow that's impressive! I think that you're the only long distance triathlete in the group. Can you tell us what it was like going from short to long physically and mentally? That would be helpful for anyone considering to bump up distance one day, and interesting to many of us. Since your training sessions are very long can you tell the team some of the time management tools you use to balance triathlon and the rest of your life?

Wow, impressive ride!

I might be able to maintain 18 mph for that distance if the wind was at my back and I put up a sail.

So last night was fish taco Friday around here. I had the tortilla dough chillin in the fridge and had turned my attention to the cabbage. I adjusted the thickness on the mandoline slicer, picked up the cabbage and proceeded to slice off a good chunk of my right pinky finger. After 15 min of steady bleeding we went to the ER where they stopped the bleeding, wrapped me in gauze and sent me home.

Needless to say I am on the injured list for everything for a few days and for swimming for a while. I'm sooooo bummed. My plan for the next two months was a yoga, swim, run plan.

Morral of the story is watch your fingers - fish tacos can be dangerous. Frown

Finally got to go for a run. Ended up running 5.30 miles today with a 9.30 average...felt good but still a ways to go.. As for the request of our mentor.. The hardest thing is getting the workouts in... pick a program so you have a guideline to go by but don't stress out if you miss a workout just stay on track.. Also don't try to make up the workouts missed as you will end up in a burnout.. Last year I used the 20 week Olympic program for beginners it was more of a time based program and it was very helpful to me. I used the weekends for my long rides and long runs I found that more seat time that I got faster over time.. Last year this time I was doing good to average 12 mph on the bike. I usually swim two to three times a week during my lunch hour... As my races get closer then you start to do bricks with a bike ride then a run afterwards this really helps a lot...my one piece of advice is to enjoy yourself and set goals that you want to achieve as a triathlete, make time for your family as they are your supporting cast without them moving up in distance is not possible because you will be away from them a lot...so when you take time off have family time...also what I learned to was the 35-39 age group was tough as odd as this sounds we were faster than people in the younger age groups...after you complete races then use those experiences to learn from like your nutrition, temperatures, your performance etc...then try to improve each event you compete in...when I made the decision I was going to do triathlons I just jumped in head first and started training for the Olympic distance right out the gate so pick where you are most comfortable and go with it... I hope this helps if anyone has any questions are concerns I will try to help to the best of my knowledge...if you look at some of my race reports that will give you an idea of what you want to look for in a race... Safe training to all.....one last thing go ahead and sign up for a race or two as this is great motivation to keep you training because you know at the end of it you have a race to compete in..

kkvane - 2011-01-22 12:43 PM The sprint I'm signed up for is 250m swim, 20K bike, and 5K run (in September 2011). I've also started slowly working on my swimming. Working more on trying to get the breathing to flow right now than actual form, etc. I looked at the swim tips here on BT, and have been doing the "bobbing" breathing practice.

Not working on the bicycle right now. I regularly ride 7-12 miles during the spring/summer, so I'm not worried about that part. I'll wait til the weather gets better to start working on that outdoors.

I guess I'm feeling okay about things at the moment. I'm already doing more running than I ever have before. I'm just kinda looking at that 2 1/2-hour time limit and fretting...

Hope the weekend is going well for everyone!!!

Just so you know it can be done, when I decided to do a triathlon last year I could not swim... at all.  Not even 20 feet.  I did exactly what you're doing with the bobbing, then I started going to the pool at my gym and just made myself work at it.  During the first week, the best I managed was 2 frantic gulps of air before I lost rhythm and got a lung full of water.  The next week I made it to 3 breaths, then 4.  I'll never forget the day I swam a full length (only 25m but seemed like a mile when I started).  Keep working at it and it will come.
Thanks for the encouragement and for sharing your story. It's hearing these that make me believe I can do this and that the perseverance will pay off.

Oh, no!!!! The deadly mandoline strikes again. This so sounds like something I would do. I'm so sorry.... Ugh. Hate that it's thrown a wrench into your workout plans as well, but I'm sure you'll find an alternate for now. Glad you got yourself put back together and are on the mend!

This is helpful information for me, being such a newbie. I'm only 4 weeks into training of any kind, and so far haven't missed a session. But I've been thinking - knowing that the time will come when I'll have to miss - illness, family stuff, etc. I was wondering if I should try to fit in a make-up or just keep on going. Thanks for the advice!

I haven't gotten here to the boards the last few days, but I have been getting to my workouts. Up to 8 minute running intervals today. Last two or three running workouts, I've been getting short little stints of feeling more "in the groove," more graceful, and not quite so clunky. Actually feels good. Then it goes away again. I'm hoping that as I go along, I'll get more of those times.Went swimming yesterday. My daughter (my swim coach ) was in town, so she gave me some tips and lots of things to work on. I'm going to plan on switching strokes during my swim portion so that I can give some muscles/directions a break. I still have a few months to work on it, so that may change.Overall, it's going well. I hope everyone has had a great weekend!!

Great progress on your running! 8 min intervals is FANTASTIC!

As for me --- I think I have the flu. (And yes, I had a flu shot.) Temp is over 102F, and I have all the 'flu' symptoms. I'm about to cough up a lung, too. Obviously, no workout for me today! It may not be the flu, but it sure feels icky, whatever it is.

8 min intervals is FANTASTIC!As for me --- I think I have the flu. (And yes, I had a flu shot.) Temp is over 102F, and I have all the 'flu' symptoms. I'm about to cough up a lung, too. Obviously, no workout for me today! It may not be the flu, but it sure feels icky, whatever it is.
Oh, no!!! My husband was down most of last week with something (and still not good) - maybe the flu. He did not have the shot. I did have the shot and so far have avoided it. Have heard there's a strain going around that's not covered with the shot. Not thinking I'm out of the woods quite yet though. Take care of yourself and get better!! His lungs are lying around the house as well.
