Hey all!
First to answer my own question I use the TYR Nestpro's and luv'em.  About two weeks to my first tri of the season.  Training going fine but need one more long ride and run for my HIM later next month.  Keep up the good work folks!

Weather better for everyone?

No the weather is not fine yet. 20mph winds with 35mph gusts is to much for a bike ride. Snow in the forecast for Sunday.

Randy - ouch on the weather!  Hope it gets better soon.

Weather has been nice but it won't be long before the heat and humidity come into play.   Anyone get Lava magazine?  Learned something new.  An article was talking about wetsuits, specifically changes made to the arms of wetsuits to increase drag during your stroke.   Thought that was a cool idea but then realized my low-end xterra had "roughed up" area  on the forearms.  Now I know why.

Hello everyone!
Weather here is still cold, we get a little tease of a warm up, and then it gets cold again.  We had snow flurries on Wednesday, more expected tonight and tomorrow.

My friend gets Lava Magazine, and lets me borrow it when she is done so I will have to check that out!

I'll be offline for the next week, leaving tonight to drive down to South Carolina for spring break with the family.  Will try to get a run in each morning since the weather will be much nicer (hopefully) than it is here!

Have a great week!

Hey all!

Hope training is going well!  Got fitted on the bike yesterday and did a ride with a friend today in St. Francisville.  Its about 45 mins from my house.  Very hilly and a great ride.  More pine trees then down in my area and it smelled great.  Had fun hitting 31+ a couple of times on the down hills.

Next question for everyone - what is your favorite training snack (bike or run or even after workouts)?

On a ride I love those 100 calorie chocolate chip granola bars.  PB sandwiches and bananas are always good.

Got a 6+ mile run in today. Very warm and somewhat humid.  Good training for NOLA as it will be hot and humid.

I go for the Cliff bars ... peanut butter, walnut-raisin, but nothing chocolate or sugar coated.

Just signed up today for the HIM - Timberman on August 21. $325!!! Didn't expect that! 20 week HIM training program begins in 3 weeks. Bike is going in for a tune-up tomorrow. By the time the weather improves I should be ready to ride! I have been maintaining the basics by swimming 1 mile a few days a week and taking a spinning class 1 day a week, and running when the weather is really nice. I am so sick of the cold and I hate taking the baby out running in this weather! This week I will bump it up and take 2 spinning classes and swim 3 days. A 6 month old makes training much harder than I thought it would. Good think I am in good shape going into the training plan. Once the weather gets nice here in Boston we can be outdoors in the jogging stroller putting in the miles.

Any advice for serious training with a baby at home?

Get yourself a bike trainer!  Spin classes are great but a bike on a trainer is much better.

There are lots of great things about a spin class but I like:

1. You are on your own bike.  Train like you race (as best you can)

2. You are at home, no travel required which means no sitter is needed

I am also logging all my workouts. Really looking forward to ome serious training with everyone!Spin class today and an hour of yoga. Any recs for a trainer brand (I am so bike dumb). Will any trainer fit my Trek 2.1? Is it fine to buy a used trainer?

Fred - yes it should, trainers do require a steel skewer but most come with one or if you buy used your LBS can sell you one cheap.  It is okay to buy a used one.  I did. I would recommend going with a fluid trainer, quiet and simulates the road well.  I have a Cycleops and it works great.

All, sorry I have been AWOL but work has been nuts.  The other day my front tube burst while sitting in my office.  Turns out the rim did not have any rim tape and the tube was cut on the spoke.  Off to LBS for another tube and some rim tape.

First race of the year is Saturday!!!  Weird thing as most of the country is dealing with snow and cold we have had warm temps.  This Saturdays race may not be wetsuit legal (most likely will but will be close).  Unusual for this early in the season.  This global warming stuff is nuts!  Will be practicing my transitions tomorrow night.

So how is everyone's training going.  Do we have some other races coming up???

Gary, I've done a lousy job of logging my training but still hanging in there.  Swimming for 1hr on Monday, spinning on Tuesday and more spinning tonight.  Weather here had been really up and down ... 70's and sunny last week and lo 40's rain and cloudy this week.  I plan to get in 20 miles or so on Sat and hopefully some mtn biking on Sunday if the trails are open.

I posted the question about metabolic testing on another thread and got some feedback that the NewLeaf carts can be unreliable, and I definitely agree.  Sooo, after more reading I'm planning to do the 30 min TT test tonight at the gym on the spin cycle.  Take 15min or so to get really loose and warm, start the 30m test and after 10 minutes hit the 'lap' button on my Garmin to record avg heart rate over the remaining 20 minute time ... and finish this 20 minutes with not one drop of gas in the tank - totally spent!.  Plug in the avg heart rate into the calculator on the forum here and see what I get.

Oh and I have a race next weekend competing in a dualthon with my daughter ... she does the running - I do the biking and together we'll do the last 2.5 mile run Cool

Alright all!

Time for another challenge.  I want two teams with Captains (I need volunteers for captains).  Goal is: Adding all of your teams workouts together who can get to a IM distance by months end.  All swim,  bike, run workouts for April count.  let me know who wants to be captains or I can appoint.

BTW - I may give bonus distances for friendly, funny, bantor between teams.  Lets do it folks!

Beautiful day here yesterday.  Went for an 18m ride on the road bike.  First time I'd ridden the loop for a local triathlon which usually occurs in June-July.  Come to think of it-with getting involved in this sport there are a lot of first times!  Anyway, weather started in lo-50's sunny and slight breeze.   I horned in on a couple (Don and Cary) and all but begged these to let me ride with them.  Maintained a little above a 16mph pace and could keep up on the flats and rollers, but there were 2 hills that were killers and no way could I keep pace.

So, I must say as appreciative as I was for the ride ... I was most appreciative for these 2 allowing me to join them, wherein I can watch their technique and learn - like the hill thing.  So Gary cheers to you as well for taking on the mentoring roll, opening the door and helping us along (sorry to get sappy).

Masters swim class tonight and a race upcoming this weekend ... yeeeeehiii!

Gary- Did I miss the race report? I looked for it but cant find it. ------------------------------------I'm in for the challenge and can be a team captain, but if someone else volunteers I'm just as happy to not have to be one ;-).--------------------------------------------------------------------Sorry for the goofy way this posts- my ipad makes it one continuous paragraph, so I'm just going to use dashes to seperate comments.---------------------------------------------------------- Shelly
