Mark,

Actually Phil (and myself) advocate for having a strong aerobic base but it has to be fine tuned by speedwork. I was able to go much faster at lower efforts by following this tips. Guys like Mike Pigg or Mark Allen, achieved speeds of 5:25min/mile at 155BPM. This was done by improving aerobic glycolisis (use of fats instead of sugars for fuel).

I do speedwork, just in a very controlled manner. I keep it short and very fast, therefore I create the neuromuscular path (parasympathetic nervous system). Then I do all my long stuff at or below my MAF (143 beats per minute). You are welcome to go back two years in my training logs and see how much of an effort it took me to go at the same speed, and you'll see the average HR is at least 15 or 20 higher.

I never do speed for long periods, it runs me down to the ground. Instead, I like to finish my workouts as fresh as possible. Recovery times are shorter and progress is made faster.

I saw James Cunnama (trained by Phil) in Austin last October run a 1:07 half marathon on the most insanely hilly course I've ever done and 80% off road after a blistering bike and a 24' swim for 1.2 miles.

Thanks Ernesto,

It could be that I need to do some speedwork then, because I can't run any slower... I even incorporate Jeff Galloway's walking on really long runs. I run very closely to the 180 Formula HR, when I walk in between, it drops down of course. I have an HR monitor, just don't use it anymore, because I know the HR...

If I can only buy one at this time, do you recommend full sleeve or sleeveless wetsuits for April/May triathlons in Texas?  Any brands to stay away from?

Yesterday was my first outdoor training ride in 6 months and (maybe I shouldn't admit this) the furthest I've cycled since childhood. I don't know what my cadence was although I tried to keep it high. This ride was about 50% in auto traffic and 50% bike path so I was really concentrating on handling the bike especially since it was my first outdoor ride "clipped in". I'm proud to report no mishaps. I kept my heart rate around 130 although it went over a number of times. The temp was about 35 degrees & overcast. Winds about 7mph.

Ernesto,

I'm trying to get the butterflies to line up in my stomach.  I need to register for my first (gulp) race.  I prefer my first one to be in a swimming pool rather than open water.  Unless you think it is too soon, my choices are:

Tri Cowtown in Benbrook 3/27  300 yd  13.8 mi 3.1 mi
Caveman Tri in Flower Mound  4/10  275 yd 11 mi 3.1 mi

The Rookie in Austin  4/17  328.08 yd 11.2 mi 2 mi (in Lake Decker OWS) looks neat and my daughter is in Austin.  I just don't know if I want to do the wetsuit thing yet.

Your suggestions please.

You are ready, do Benbrook and Austin so you get your daughter to see you. I'll go see you in Benbrook!

+1

You've already done the swim. You'll do fine. Good luck with your choice.

Good for you Barry.  I'm not sure if I'd rather have 35 degrees or 28 MPH winds.

I'm off work with a slight sore throat today.  I'm thinking I'll have to skip the pool and have a forced rest day.  I hate that.  The chicken soup and tea are sure good though.

Never mind, just bought one.  I got a full-sleeved Profile Design Marlin 2010 version new try-on demo for $35.  That's cheaper than renting.  At that price, I can probably buy a sleeveless too.

Barry,

Nice to know you were able to go outside, in that part of the country that is probably what you call a great day, huh? Did you go by yourself? Because if you did I would recommend finding a group in a local bike store or triathlon club. There’s safety in numbers and many other benefits, such as competitiveness and draft (when you are tired), experience exchange, etc. Don’t worry about being a “rookie”, they have their own too.

During the first few weeks you’re going to endure the biggest struggles (just like we all did) and the best thing is to know you’re not alone out there, that’s why I suggest a group ride.

Like I said before, work on the creation of an endurance base, speed comes later. Look at your schedule and available times and start a little routine, built over time. You don’t want to ramp up your mileage quickly, it leads to injury and overtraining.

After looking at your videos, the wetsuit (no matter which one) will help tremendously because it will create the buoyancy you are lacking right now (sinking hips). Sleeve or no sleeve it doesn't matter here in Texas, we're never below 60 degrees for water temp. Now put your credit card down on the table and sign up for a race! hehe...

Ernesto,

Today was another excersise in running slow, below the usual pace.
HR 135-140 (as always).
Funny thing, when I tried to slow down even more, the HR went up!!! It only came down substantially when I walked.

I also did 2x1 min efforts (max I could hold for 1 min) and noticed HR of 165 only...

I don't know what to make of all that.

I don't know what to make of all that.

I have heard people say that there's a good chance for injury when you don't go at your normal pace (this includes going slower). Your natural gait is affected when you slow down, that's the only explanation that I can think of. Do you have a file?

Also, the heart rate not going above 165 is normal, the more you train (like you're doing now), your heart becomes more efficient and it displaces more blood in every stroke and your circulatory system has bigger capillari. I included the file for a half marathon that I did in December, as you can see, the last few miles (5) were an all out effort and the heart rate was maxed out at around 165 or so. I think you HR not going too high is an indication of fitness, even though I haven't seen files it all seems to point to a good preparation. But maybe it's a good time for you to start putting on the HR strap, nothing gauges fitness and overtraining like looking at the facts, not relying on perception only.

OK Everyone

I'm getting ready to place an order to swim outlet and I'm close to getting free shipping.  Can anyone tell me if I'm leaving anything out:

Body Glide for her?
Women's Vanquisher Goggles
Finis Freestyle Paddles
Sporti Pullbuoy
Ultralite Running Hat

Also, I'm home sick today (that happens about once every 8 years) and tomorrow.  Sore throat, body aches, head ache, yuk.  It's really putting a damper on my training.  Need advice on when to start back training and what to start with.

Sorry to hear about your sickness, and I hope you get better soon. We'll see about training when you get better, for now, forget about it and relax. Maybe this is your body warning you about increasing your mileage too fast, this is very common too.

I'm calling in sick tomorrow, my wife gave me a stomach virus. It came at the wrong time but there's nothing I can do except rest it out.

Maybe you need to order some chamois creme, I know they make one specific for women and I heard it's name is "Hoo ha ride glide" please don't laugh. All the women that I train with swear by it as to be miraculous. Trust me, you don't want to start treating rashes or saddle sores after they are chronic. An ounce of prevention...

Also, I got me a yoga mat at Walmart that I cut in half and I use in transition to set my things upon. It makes other people respect your space and you can keep it all clean on dirt/grass transition areas.

So was it your wife's cooking (jk)?

I do use chamois creme and was going to try something different, so thanks.  Do I need one of those race belts and if so, what kind?  Right now I just wear a camelback for riding and running.  What about things on your feet for swimming (like neoprene booties).  I have my dive boots somewhere.

I guess I need to start reading about this transition stuff.  I did read NOT to get on the bike unless your helmet is buckled.

I'll put yoga mat on the list.  What about towels?  Big, little?

Thanks Ernesto,

I still don't have a Garmin, but those HRs were from my HR monitor I wore this morning. Few years ago I did max HR test and got 185 (I hated the test, I must say... felt like I was gonna die). I don't want to do it again, honestly, but would like to know the aerobic threshold accurately. All tose formuli are too inaccurate, everybody is different and has different biological age and fitness level. One day I will get on one of those machines... (sigh)

Hope you feel better!!!

My understanding is that all WTC events have Ironman perform and water (and all the solids of course). The thing about the IM perform drink is that it has a twist cap so I don't know... I have an Inviscid design refillable bottle so I empty the contents into my bottle and toss the trash in the trash area. I don't have to drink it all at once.

About the ride, maybe you went too hard. The first thirty miles should be done without putting almost any effort, very easy. At mile 80 or so it will hurt if you didn't pace properly. Keep in mind that there's a marathon to be ran later so pace, pace, pace.

Also, today they posted the waves for my Puerto Rico race, I will be on the 12th wave (out of 15) at 7:50AM, which is not really good for me, since all of the run is going to happen during the scorching heat of the noon. I feel like this virus has also set me back since I should be doing my intensity stuff and I couldn't run a 15 minute mile for my life.

We'll see how it plays out, I'm pretty sure I'll be fine by Thursday or so.

Try running after work, but if you don't feel well stop immediately. Don't overdo it.

You know it's amazing.  I don't ever get on my bike with my helmet unbuckled and I don't ever move my car until everyone is buckled in.  It just seems like if you are nervous or not thinking clearly, that you could make a mistake and cost yourself a penalty.

Ernesto,

I didn't make it to run.  I just was not feeling up to it.  I did hear that the virus is going around.

I see you got a run in.  Think about it this way.  Better to have the virus this week than next when you're already at the race.  Remember whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

I'm pulling for you.  I'll try again for the run tomorrow.
