It's a thought... ^^^^

OR, just don't beat yourself up!    There will be good days and bad days.  Just know that EVERY day you are out there, makes you better and enjoy it.

I run with my garmin every time, but mix up the routes, depending what's on the books...  Do I get disapointed when I get home and my pace is slower than I wanted?  Sure, for about 60 seconds, then I move on to more important things.

As a side note?  Surounding yourself with good/encouraging/positive people, like those in this mentor group, ALSO makes you and your life better.  So enjoy that as well!

Have a good weekend everyone.  Train hard and safe.  Oh, and have FUN!

Agreed.  Too many people in this sport forget that it's a sport, it's supposed to be fun.  We do it because we enjoy it.  The vast majority of us are not paying the bills with triathlon, so let's keep things in perspective.

Another thing I wanted to add is that I think most of us are following some kind of plan.  But even if not, or I should say especially if not, we need to remember that, when running especially, we HAVE to incorporate easy days.  As the old saying goes, most triathletes go too hard on their easy days and too easy on their hard days.  I just had to hear this from the coach yesterday when he gave me a Z1 run to do (if anyone doesn't know, zone 1 is 1 of 5 when talking about heartrate, it means REALLY easy).  I thought I would have to walk to keep it that low. I know it's not as fun, but it's necessity for anyone that wants to get better, and avoid injury.

10k for me tomorrow morning.  Looking for a new PR.

Good luck on that 10K!

As I'm just finishing up WK #3 of my 20 week HIM plan, I'm really starting to understand the value of low intensity days and days of complete rest.  One thing I like about following a plan is that it makes me feel like I "earned" my days of rest and low intensity.  Besides the physical toll training takes, there's so much mental effort it takes to push onward.  Even things like trying to plan tomorrow's training before going to bed can become tedious/stressful.

I was so happy last night thinking about my day off today that I could the mental relaxation kicking in.  No stress about packing a gym bag, setting the alarm for 5 am, etc.  I was even able to enjoy an adult beverage (or 2).

I just received my new, and first, wetsuit - Xterra Vortex 3 full.  Any tips before struggling to get into this thing?  I've seen the videos on putting it on, but did I read somewhere that I should soak it first?  Should I put on some Glide anywhere in particular, or just learn the chafe points the hard way?  Thanks.

Tip for getting it on- put plastic shopping bags on your feet, helps with the slide.  And whatever you do, do not pull with your nails.  You'll puncture the suit.

As far as glide goes- glide anywhere there is a seam.  Mine is sleeveless so I do around my neck really well, and then around the arm holes (think armpit area).

Make sure you do your neck or else you'll look like a victim of the noose.

I woudln't soak it- that seems counterintuitive to me (think about trying to pull on pants when your skin is wet?) but that's just me.

Have fun.  Feel free to take video an dpost, I'm sure we could all use the entertainment.

I have that suit in the short john. Glide everywhere - friction is not your friend.

When I race, Pam cooking spray (the original only) on the legs makes for easier removal.

I think it's different for everyone.  I personally don't use any body glide if it's a shorter race.  MAYBE some around my neck at teh collar, to avoid chaffing...

Getting in it is more a test of patience and discipline.  My technique is keep the suit bunched up and get my feet all the way through first and work it up your legs...  I'm not sure if I'm explaining right.  If you pull it on like a pair of pants?  No go.  Think more like sock or PANTY HOSE (OH NO!  Did I just reveal my closet X-dressing fetish?).  It's just a matter of taking your time, me thinks.

As mentioned above.  Avoid grabbing, especially from the outside of the suit.  I ripped a brand new suit the VERY FIRST TIME,  I put it on being careless.  Try to "pinch" it to pull.  Not grab.

A representative from one of the wetsuit comapanies did start a thread about soaking your wetsuit and how it's helpfull.  They dry out and become stiff, making them harder to get on.  SO, as suggested, I soak mine the day before in the tub for an hour or two.  No real time limit, just put it in and forget about it for a bit.  It's dry when I put it on in for the race.  A wet suit then would feel GROSS!  Just soak after long durations of storage (couple months)...

HAHA!  Want an insite to my rediculous/crazy imagination?  When I'm soaking my suit, I feel like a "witch" making a potion.  You know Eye of Newt, 3 toadstools, and neoprene of a tri wetsuit.  I don't do the cackle, but it crosses my mind!  The wife wonders why I randomly laugh by myself....  these are one of those times.

I never soak my wetsuit and then try to put it on wet, that would be tough.

In my old wetsuit, I had to use the plastic bags on hands and feet and it took alot of work to get it on. Then I went out and bought one that actually fit me and I no longer have to use the baggies on feet and hands to get it on. And it is so much more comfortable!  I have a 2xu sleeveless suit, as before I had a long sleeve and I truly love the sleevelessness (new word).

As for Body Glide, you will definitely know where you need it after your first swim in the wetsuit. I only use it around the neck and armholes like Nicole said!

Yes, Make sure you're nails are trimmed!  I have several nice little marks in mine becasue I don't listen.  Don't try to put it all the way on and then pull it higher.  Pull as you go.  Make sure it's all the way pulled up beginning with the legs.  Inch by inch.  If you don't, you'll feel like it's uncomfortable to extend your arms, like it's pulling down on you.  Once you get all the way up, you can also lean forward some and grab the middle to pull up more if need be.  I only really notice needing glide around my neck.

Good luck with it!  Let us know how it goes.  To be hoenst, I still hate mine and I'm considering doing my HIM w/o it.  But don't get discouraged, it does take some getting used to for sure.  Make sure to swim with it several times before race day.

Good gravy!  I'm glad my April sprint is an indoor swim.  I may not have been able to race after all the energy I would have had  to exert getting the wetsuit on!!  With that being said, I plan to purchase one soon as my June 25th swim portion of the race is in the lovely Monongahela River.  I was thinking of going with the Xterra Volt suit that is only $99.  As a beginner suit, and a beginner guy who has never had a wetsuit on, is this a decent choice?  I have two kids in private school, so $300 for a wetsuit is not going to fly.

I have one of the Xterra full suits as well.  Perfectly good quality, imo.  I think it's more in how well you take care of it.  As mentioned before... soak it after storage, try not to rip it with your nails.  And also, read the instructions that come with it.  I would look into the using Pam.  I swear I remember reading to specifically not use cooking spray as it may damamge the material.  Also, don't swim in the pool with it.  If you have to, keep it short, and rinse it really well immediately afterward.

My first wetsuit was one I bought at Dick's and it was short sleeved and short legs. It was really made for wakeboarding I think!  LOL

But on the other hand, I did not drowned. I look back at my first triathon and wonder how I managed without all the cool stuff I use now, or maybe its do I need all this stuff I use now??

That's one of my main concerns.  I just don't know what I don't know.  I have no idea what I need or what I don't.  I got a good pair of shoes and thhat's about it.  Well, I have my bike too (it's 25yrs old but it will work).  Any sort of checklist I should be starting to compile before I set out on this journey.  Yikes, if I'm thinking about this now, imagine how wrecked I'll be in April at the first race!!!  I think the fear of the unknown and the challenge with myself is why I am loving this right now.

Swim: goggles, swim cap (normally given to you) and wetsuit most likely for an April race

Bike: Bike, helmet, (hopefully you have clipless pedals and shoes) sunglasses and maybe gloves depending on the distance (anything less than a HIM and I would not wear them)

Run: shoes, hat or visor, and race number belt

That is pretty much all you HAVE to have, depending on the distance. I would also throw in there you need tri shorts and top.  I would suggest you make a list of everything you use on your workouts and then you can go through it before the race.

Great info, I have most all of that stuff with the exception of the tri shorts and top.  I guess I'm more concerned with the ancillary stuff that a seasoned traithlete would have on hand that I just don't know enough about.  Bells and whisltes kinda stuff.  My guess is I won't need it for my April race, but I'd hate to get there and find out....man, I wish I had that......type of thing.

There is a race checklist on BT.  It's in your logs under Planned Races (right side of the screen).

I STILL use that before every race.  Mind you, it's VERY comprehensive and I don't take half of it.  BUT, it thinks of everything.  You won't have to worry about not "knowing" what to bring if you look at that list.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but the one gadget I can't live without (for training and racing) is my Garmin.  I have the Forerunner 305, but there are several versions.  At the time, I bought my for around $200 (though they may be cheaper now that they 310xt is out).  Not a necessity by any means, but very valuable tool.

It's not the bells and whistles you should worry about, but think much more basic.  I always pack a ziplock bag which looks like I heisted a pharmacy.  Rarely use the stuff, but it makes me feel more prepared (it is the Boy Scout in me).

Not sure what event you will be doing or when it is, but think about where you will be and the stuff you need.  When you get to a race at 5am and its pitch black, a flashlight/headlamp is key.  Also, in big races toilet paper can be in short supply so better to have than have not.  A small roll of electrical tape is always good to have just in case (plus I use it tape gu on to the top tube).

Trained very hard this weekend, but I dare anyone to challenge me for the most tedious/boring workouts this weekend:

Saturday - 1h 45m on the trainer doing Spinervals 31 - 3 Main sets alternating between cadence and restitance 1 min x 15 (rest 10"); 1:30 min x 10 (rest 15 ") and 2 min x 7 (rest 20")

Sunday - Sw - 2500 yards (main set of 1500 yds continuous) followed by 40 mins on the treadmill (30" striders every mins starting at 20')

Looks like warmer weather (50s) will be upon us this week.

As for my monthly goals, it looks like I sandbagged the whole thing (here are my totals through 2/13:

Bike - 97m/135m
Run - 30m/35m
Sw - 6m/7m

Since we are still just less than halfway through the month, I'm going to up my monthly goals as follows:

Bike - 190M
Run - 65M
Swim - 12M

Happy Valentines Day All.

Me too!  I mean, I have done a couple 10 minutes runs after a ride (per the plan), but today was the first official "brick" of 2011.  Did 26.5 miles/3.2 miles or so... I hate that rubbery leg feeling.  How so easily forget that.

It was a stunning day weather wise, so I was able to get mine done outside.
