Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Artemis' "WE CAN DO IT!" Mentor Group - FULL Bishtaw - 2011-06-06 2:52 PM Feeling great today thanks everyone for keeping up with the posting! I've printed off my training plan and tonight i hang it up for official training to begin! Lots of Biking running and MTBing this weekend, getting into the woods really got me going, I evan parked my MTB on sunday and ran the trail. Trail running??? who knew, I need to plan better next time and go earlier as the deer flys ran me off trail.... No beer this weekend, smaller portions, and hardly any candy i really think I have a problem after a race w/ depression?? After my marathon I believe it took almost a month to regain my mental focus. Does anyone else get the blues after a race? I've definitely had some problems with lack of motivation and maybe a little depression after races. Bigger ones - like marathons - are usually worse. For me, I end up picking the next race and focusing on it. Otherwise, I get stuck in a pattern of sitting on the couch and deciding I'm going to start training "tomorrow." |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Artemis' "WE CAN DO IT!" Mentor Group - FULL spaceyg02 - 2011-06-07 8:59 PM So, I've been invited by the owner of the gym I go to spin to partake in a "spin marathon" this Sunday. I don't know all of the details (hugely due to there being a language barrier between the owner and I). Remember, I am in Mexico, am from California, and only speak intermediate Spanish. My question is this: Do you think I should go and check it out? What I do know is that there is a fee for doing it (will find out how much tomorrow), it is a nearby city (the owner and his wife offered to take me), is outside, but on spin bikes, starts at 8am, and one of my friends is willing to do it with me. What do you think y'all? (One of my main concerns is having a sore rear since I do not have bike shorts here with me and it's supposed to last possibly 3 hours!) I would definitely check it out!! It's worth looking into and could be one of those experiences that you get to talk about for a long time. |

Now all I need todo is not eat candy today, and not smoke! Hope everyone has a super day. Bill Tell you what: you don't eat candy today and I won't eat candy today. Member 21 | Subject: RE: Artemis' "WE CAN DO IT!" Mentor Group - FULL Hello All, Well, it's been a tough couple weeks... Basically, I came down with what I know (from past diagnosis) to be bronchitis. I ran my 5k, which was really a milestone for myself, and then not long after learned that my triathlon (at the end of June) was cancelled. It completely bottomed out my training. I was pretty sickly (my mom said I looked like I was a prison survivor) so I just stopped training and tried to rest. I'm pretty down and out from missing my partner, so I think it was just too much. Fast forward to today: I've gained about 5 lbs, lost a lot of muscle, I think my lungs are fixed, I started taking a good natural seratonin supplement and I'm ready to start running again. As a little info, my family and I are all moving across the country on July 11th, so I had planned that the tri would be my "final hurrah" of fitness before throwing our lives into chaos. Now I think I'll just try to regain my fitness without it taking such a negative toll on my body. I'll try to get ready for a tri in September--a much more relaxed goal, but not without a little sadness for me. So my new plan is to ease back into a 3x a week running plan, try to swim 2x a week and do 3x a week of strength training (100 pushups app, a personal fave, handstands, squats). I think if I do that and eat right I'll get back to where I want to be pretty quickly. Many thanks for being there to "hear" my story.

Member 21 | Subject: RE: Artemis' "WE CAN DO IT!" Mentor Group - FULL 100 pushups app is a smart phone app that helps you be able to do 100 pushups at a time. I did it a couple months ago and got up to 89, with just a minute or two break as I was going. Really fun and when I started I could only do 12. Handstands? Well, I'm not GOOD at them, but they are so, so fun. I use them as a reward for other acts, like "if you do 100 squats then you can play at handstands." I do them against a wall and can hold them for 3-4 seconds. But I am getting way better and they are an amazing core workout. Thanks, folks! |

Extreme Veteran 344 South Lake Tahoe, Ca. | Subject: RE: Artemis' "WE CAN DO IT!" Mentor Group - FULL I hope everyone feels better. I've been fighting a cramp problem the last 3 days. My left calf keeps cramping. Not just when I workout, but when I'm seditary, also. I have been eating foods high in potassium (bananas, coconut water, etc.) and keeping my electrolytes well topped off. It is still there. I usually walk to work and back everyday (1.5 miles each way) and I can feel it just waiting to strike. I stretch regularly. I have had to cut my runs/rides back because of this nagging issue. What else is there that I may be missing? Should I make an appointment with the sports med doc.? Nutritionist?

Potassium, sodium, and calcium are the three big things for muscle contraction, so I'm a bit surprised that you're still having problems with the extra potassium and electrolytes. That with the stretching should be good. Unfortunately, I can't think of a better answer for you. |

My school had a lockdown this week due to a shoot-out happening too close for comfort. My students and I heard gunshots as we were walking from music class back to our classroom. The city has been "code red" two days this week. I am bummed about not being able to do the spin marathon, but am more bummed about all of this violence that this city is experiencing. On a brighter note... I am headed out this morning to hopefully spin for about an hour and a quarter then maybe run a 5K. Have a great weekend all! |
