Pick a city... I travel a lot
Subject: RE: Let's Get It Started! with chrisbowers mentor group - CLOSED and ROLLING!
I finished all of my planned workouts from last week, getting the final swim in at 10 o'clock Saturday night (thankful for the hotel pool, ene if it is a little bit short)! Today is the first day of my Taper for the Little Rock Marathon in two weeks. 15 mile at 25degrees F. I'll be glad to get back to warmer running weather.I also picked my Olympic distance training plan from BT. It's a 26 week, 2 race plan that gives me a week to recover from the marathon before I start the base period. HERE WE GO!

Chris, sorry to hear about your injury. I keep having a recurring calf strain that is keeping me from running like I should. I hope you recover quickly!

Steven, it looks like you are very dedicated. Keep it up! I am sure you will do well in your races.

Swam a mile for the first time on Sunday.  Was pretty sore last night, but felt good to hit a mile for the first time.

I am such a fair weather trainer.  The last couple of weeks have really hurt my training.  The first week I was everywhere for work and had no time.  Last week, we had rain, rain and more rain.  The only training I did was two days of swimming.  I have no excuse this week, so I am back to my regular training schedule.  Will try to throw in an extra day of running and biking too.

Sorry all, I was in So Cal for the past 10 daze playing g-ma and soaking in some rays!  I had access to a computer but the connection was slow and I just wanted to keep moving.  Training? Down the tubes got a short swim in on the first day and a few long runs...well one turned into a med run with a long stroll with a smoothie when my sugar levels dropped drastically.  New meds.  Diet was good and at one point I was 5 lbs lighter!

Missed all my tri buddies and anxious to read all your updates!

OMG! I have got to move back to a beach side town!  Absolutely beautiful!

plumline387 - 2012-02-09 5:29 PM Great story Cynthia! I haven't done my first tri yet, but I am excited every day to get my body ready for this. Being healthy is a big part of all this for me but I also love to compete.

Its amazing how it affects the BP and cholesterol.  The thought of taking one less med is exciting.  I saw an endocrinologist for the first time on Tuesday.  My BP was 100/60, way low, especially for me and he wants me to stop my BP immediately!  I am a little nervous though because this doc did not seem to believe me when I told him I was 70lbs heavier and my BP was so high at one point they wanted to put me in the hospital.  He said I was not his typical patient!

We got this Jay!

Kudos to you both!!! I've been lucky and have never had high BP or Cholesterol but I've known many people that it's affected.  I'm sure it's a great feeling to have it down to a normal level after so many years.  I had a milestone achievement a couple of days ago..... I am finally below 200lbs!  And to top it off, I bought my first pair of size 32 jeans yesterday!  I think the last time I wore that size, I was in High School, what an awesome feeling!

My daughters surgery went great today.  The surgeon got in there, cleaned up the scar tissue and removed some Brusitis.  He says she could be back in the pool in as little as 2 weeks!  She is very excited!

Glad the surgery went so smoothly!  Way to go on the weight loss too!  Next thing you know you will have a pair of skinny jeans! Ha Ha!  Once you go thinner you never want to go back!  Congrats and keep up the training and healthy eating!

Winging my training this week....for a great reason, in San Diego visiting my grandson!  I will for sure do a lot of running.  Have a great weekend all!

Have fun in SD!!!  I miss that place.  Maybe you could go to the Irish Pub in Coronado across from the Hotel Del for me??!!

Sorry didn't make it to Coronado...actually only spent one day in SD but spent a lot of time in Orange county and had margaritas at Newport, Huntington and Hermosa Beach!

Congrats Brian on the weight loss and your daughter's surgery. As for milestones, I seem to have them every week although I know that won't continue forever. This week I had my longest swim of 1500 yards and the scale said 169.5 which I haven't seen since I can remember. I don't plan to lose much more but a few more would be ok. I also am improving every week during bike classes and I think that is going to be big once the weather turns and i can get outside again. Have a great weekend all.

Jay

Nice job JAY!  Saaaawweeet!

I got a 4.8 mile run in on the treadmill this AM and I am leaving now for a lunch time swim of 1500 yards. As for the bike question, I am a beginner but my thought process is that if you want to be competetive in your age group or have hit a plateau with your tri times, then maybe getting the tri bike would help shave off some time. I have a nice road bike that I bought to get started and unless I get extremely competetive (which is entirely possible) after the first year or two, then I will stick with that. Sounds like a good price if you decide to go that route.

By the way, I bought the Xterra wet suit. I just hope my chlostrophobia doesn't kick in when I go to do the swim. I will try in a pool first. Just thinking about it makes me a little clammy but I'll be damned if that is going to stop me after all this training!

Newbie question with apologies to the veterans: When I go to do the swim, I wear my wetsuit with what under it? I assume bike shorts are not an option since you can't run in them so does everyone wear tri short/suit underneath? In this case,I guess you deal with the less padding of a tri suit for a day?

I heard that the chlorine is not good for the suit but then again, my husband practiced in rescue swimming in pools in his wet suits when he was in the Navy.  I will ask him about it.

chrisbowers - 2012-02-17 10:06 PM Tried to run last night, for the first time in almost 3 weeks after the calf problem. Didn't go so well. I felt a strain after a little less than a half mile, turned around and came back. Went to the doctor today and it turns out I have an incomplete gastroc tear. 4 weeks in a boot and PT. At least I can swim and cycle as long as I have no pain. Have a good weekend everyone. Be safe.

Sorry to hear about the injury....play it smart and let it rest.

I am with Ken on this one; if you have the $550 for the used tri bike in good condition buy it for the price!  If you are using the family vacation $$ or if that money was allocated for something sensible there will be hell to pay if you buy the bike.

Unfortunately (or fortunately from my spouse's perspective) I waited too long. He sold it while I was out of town. Oh, well, I've got a good road bike that served me well in a duathlon and a century ride last season, so I'll stick with that. Let's see, what else can I spend $550 bucks on...

All this weight loss is costing me a fortune. First, I sign up for a triathlon which has cost a small fortune and now clothes! I wear a suit a few times a year and my old ones are like tents on me now. So, we go shopping for one suit. $800 later with two suits, three dress shirts and two ties later....and that was before going to another place and buying some work pants. I guess it is worth it to fit in 32's again, but I am starting to think I can't afford myself. I know one thing...I better not go back to where I was because I am sure not buying yet another wardrobe!

Too funny...most times I hate being sensible; I hate wearing sensible shoes, doing the sensible thing but we all gotta do it I guess.

I've historically used power bars before a run, and power bites and sport beans during bike rides. I've never really eaten anything while I run, but figure I will need to in the future. What do you use for fuel during the run? And where do you keep it?

I thought this was a really good article on mental toughness. It's a pretty quick read too.

I tolerate most fuels pretty well (iron stomach), but most of the time I use either gels or a paste during the run.  I will generally put together a flask of Hammer Perpetuem made into a pancake batter consistency for long events HIM or longer, because it has some protein along with carbohydrates.  If it is an Olympic or a Half Marathon I will generally use a gel (Hammer, GU, Power Gel, etc...).  As for where I put it during the run, I can easily slip a couple of gels or the flask in my small pockets in my tri jersey.  I have also used the race belt by fuel belt that has some elastic bands specifically for gel packs.  For anything under an Olympic or Half Marathon, I generally don't take any race fuel, with the possible exception of a sports drink on the course.

My main suggestion is to try both the fuel and the delivery system during training.

Good advice. I have a belt with a 20 oz water bottle I use for marathon training, but definitely don't want to wear something that bulky during a race. I've been looking at the fuel belts, and may take the plunge soon. I've only tried gels once, a long time ago. It was a cold day, and I didn't think to warm it up... It was like shooting Elmer's glue into my mouth. Took me the rest of the run to recover!
