TJ and Manattees and FoM (that would be Friends of Manatees),

I have a link to a race contract on my training log page here.  It's from Running with the Pack and while it is a bit running oriented, I think that it applies.

Most of the contract items are pretty good, here are some random highlights:

  • I will review the race map and elevation chart (if available)
  • I will remember to pack my shoes
  • I will not try anything new for the first time on race day
  • I will not start out too fast and overdo it in the first half of the race
  • I will share my experience with others

In fact, maybe the Manatees need to make up their own version?

Haha, I am looking over the list now. I like the ones your selected. Remember to pack the shoes is quite important!

Or two pair in my case Tongue out

I had my second official practice with the team last night. Saturdays are supposed to be the more casual day and Wednesday is the real deal.

It was, hands down, one of the hardest things I have done in a long time. Granted A. I have had a bit of a fever and B. I didn't eat before practice (which fell during my regular dinner time) but daaaayum!

Let me back up and talk about how awesome my coach is. After warm up he gathers everyone together and talks about how all the racers did over the weekend. Even getting into the minor details like, "despite the 1.5 mile gravel field at mile 11-12.5 so and so finished with x time." He clearly values each and every one of his athletes. Second, he was talking about some race detail and said something along the lines of "so and so had about a 10k left in the race, so about 6 miles when ..." then was interrupted by a smart azz that says, " A ten K is 6.2 miles." Tom (coach) just looks at him and then says, "6.21371...I could go on?"

Anyway,  the guys were supposed to do 3.5 miles speeding up at the middle mile and then speeding up again for the last 800. The girls were supposed to do 1.5 miles with the same progression. "Swwwwweeet!" I was thinking to myself. The coach had come up to me earlier and told me he has an idea of my current capabilities but wants to sand bag me a little until I get used to the frequency of these harder workouts. "Think of it as a practice in patience." he says. So this whole idea of a sandbagged 1.5 miler has me feeling pretty great. Just before we are lining up on the track to start he comes up to me and tells me I will be doing my workout with this girl who is prepping for a HM this weekend. 4.5 miles with the above progression. "SH*T!"

I did it. And it was REALLY hard. I mean, had it not been with a whole group I think I might have quit. Obviously it's exactly that reason that this group is going to be so good for me. Just like you have all said about masters swimming.

At the end the coach pulls me aside and says something along the lines of "You looked great! Piece of cake." I don't know if he was effing with me or what but I am pretty sure I didn't look anything close to great.

*Sorry for the book, I just had to share

Yes. You are the sh*t.

rrrunner - 2012-09-05 8:29 PM So I'm back to "should" do 4 bikes & 5 runs :-/

One more quick thought.  My coach usually sneaks in one run per week as a brick.  Usually this is 10-20 minutes off the bike.  In the winter this is sometimes get to spin class early and ride 75-90 minutes, then quick get over to the treadmills and run 15-20 minutes.

It's what I lovingly call a "trannie" (transition) run, and indeed they are great ways to "sneak" in extra runs. If you run just a few minutes off of each bike, that really adds up.

Quite a few of my runs, right through peak period, are only 15-30min long. Yes, I count those as part of running 5-6x/week.

I just wanted to make sure that TJ had considered this as she thinks about increasing run frequency.

Yeah, I think that is a big thing to remember. When we are recommending more runs, they can absolutely be 15-30 minutes. Even if they are standalone and not part of a brick. And even if they are closer to 15 and not 30. It all counts.

Piglets. Butt Waggle. I don't think it would matter to me what the song was. (I mean, I'm the one who posted a Westlife video I was addicted to).

Muppet songs ... Bohemian Rhapsody. So awesome.

No scoop that I'm aware of.  I was just concerned about the number of weekly bikes and runs I need to fit in for HIM training.  I am actually working on my plan now (er, no I'm not ... I'm ... uh ... working on my spreadsheet skills! Yeah, that's it!) So anyway, I originally hadn't paid much attention to Finks "tranny" runs but I'm including them.  I'm up to week 11 and so far most weeks are: MWF - Masters in the AM, Tues AM "trannie", Thur AM bike (or drainer), Monday and Friday PM run, Saturday long bike, Sunday long run.  With that as a framework I figure I might be able to squeeze in Tue & Thur extra bike or run depending on the schedule.

YES. I also like Kokomo. Have you happened to have seen the latest movie? Jason Segal as a writer AND actor, amazing. Plus Bret McKenzie's music supervision was so perfect.

The cameos by Rashinda Jones (swoon!!!Dave Grohl and Sarah Silverman were just icing on the cake

Apparently I am a little obsessed.

I'm a little bit embarrassed that I missed this, but what's the scoop on your bike, TJ?

I thought that you said that you got new shoes, which I was aware of, and a new bike.  I thought to myself, how could I have missed this?!
