He said, "You have to get on the Wendy's plan." Okay... what does that mean. "You know why Wendy's burgers are square? They don't cut corners, Christina." Needless to say I got called out and did do all 8 of the sets. I hope everybody's week is off to a good start.
LOL.
Kids are home again today because the weathermen over sensationalized the WINTER STORM we were going to get. At least I can get my intervals in on the trainer and have the two older girls keep the infant entertained. I thought everyone in TX had monster trucks...so a little snow shouldn't be a problem. |

26 , Florida | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Love to see the humor here!! Thanks! Crissy - as far as my bike ride, I do live in Florida and it couldn't be flatter in southwest Florida. Wind is another story, but I had very little wind on my ride. Come bike with me and we can both feel like speed demons! Good job on your indoor Tri Dangerjim!!!! I'm going to check out Aussies Abroad on Netflix and also look into picking up the Skratch Labs book. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Cheers, Brenda |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed So today is my rest day and I planned on actually sleeping until 7. But I was awakened by the sound of Christine (my SO) shouting my name and asking for help. My stepdaughter (age 10) had apparently fainted after she got up to get ready for school. Christine was holding her up and Sam(antha) was conscious but looked ashen and was having trouble seeing. She eventually came to but was not really oriented. So Christine called the ambulance while I put a cool cloth on her head - she felt hot and was kind of sweaty. The EMTs took her temp and it was 101 - she was fine last night. She was taken to the ER and I just heard (3+ hours later) that Sam fainted again. So I am not sure what is up - was kind of thinking it was perhaps related to a flu or something because everyone in these parts has it but now I am not so sure. Meanwhile, I had to scramble to get the 5 y/o ready for school, walk the dogs, make breakfast, and pack a lunch. |

26 , Florida | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed My thoughts to you and your family ccmpsyd!! That is scary for sure. Please let us know when you get an update. Thanks for the shout out for Aussies Abroad - very impressed with Craig Alexander's attitude and moral ethics.....he really does seem like a super nice guy. I just realized that my next half marathon is not that far away (March 16th) and I usually use Hal Higdon's plans, but he calls for 4-5 days of running. When I've used his plans before I wasn't doing tris. Any suggestions on half marathon plans? Guess I better look at the plans right here on BT to get started. Right now, I'm swimming 2 nights a week and definitely want to stay with it. I really like getting in a bike ride on the weekends, but this weekend I only have Sunday off, so I'll be doing an 8-mi run. Also thanks for the Skratch Labs info! I've heard people mentioned it before, but it really helps me to see things written down. Going to have to pick that book up. Any way to figure out people's names to connect them to their BT name without going back through all the old posts? It seems so impersonal to say "hey sorry to hear your news ccmpsyd" Cheers, Brenda |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Thank you very much folks for your concern. Actually, I am now getting a bit worried - which says something because I am pretty level headed/rational when it comes to medical issues. Sam was admitted and stayed the night. They are doing tests and the doctors are not sure what is up and think it might be some kind of blood infection. They started an IV today and blew out her vein on the first attempt. Sam is one tough kid and rarely cries but apparently she was starting to lose it. I am at work and getting updates as soon as possible but it is unlikely that she will be released from the hospital any time soon. BTW - does anyone wear prescription sunglasses while on the bike or run? My eyes are to the point now that I will need to wear glasses full time. I don't really want to wear contacts and was curious what other visually impaired athletes do. I may need to wear contacts though because last year during my HIM, I made a turn at a buoy when I shouldn't have because I could not see the other buoy farther away that was the actual turn buoy...it was embarassing. |

Thoughts and prayers headed your way. As far as prescription sunglasses. I wear glasses to drive, at the movies, anything further than 5ft from my face. I did prescription sunglasses starting in 2011. First, the sunglasses were totally worth it. I got Oakley sport glasses with my HSA and LOVE them. They also came with the original lenses. Last summer I got contacts. Now that's what I normally wear. Took a bit to get used to but I highly highly recommend. Wish I had done it years earlier. Now my running buddy and I usually have at least one of us wearing our prescription and haven't had a repeat of the time we were finishing a run and we thought we saw a horse/bear coming toward us on our path. It was really just a short Latino man jogging in very baggy sweats. -Christina |

I still have good eyesight and am happy to report no need for glasses/contacts. But I will take note of recommendations because I'm sure by the time I hit 50 I'll need something. Chris- hope the Dr's get things figured out and Sam is back to normal soon! |

I've even seen a 'glass' holder at the exit of swim leg - neat idea! re: nutrition; for long rides/runs I use heed with a dash of mio for taste. I also throw it banana chips to much on. Typically for training I'll use what the big race uses at their aid stations. Mark. |

26 , Florida | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Chris - hope they gets Sam on the mend really soon!! As for glasses - I do wear progressive sunglasses & glasses and if it's sunny, I always wear my sunglasses. I'm one of those strange people who love glasses.....sorta feel like Elton John, but I don't have THAT many pairs! I even wear my progressive sunglasses (which are also polarized and perfect for Florida) with my bike helmet that has a sunglass shield....I like a LOT of shade!!! I have the Giro Air Attack helmet and love it. As for the guy in baggy pants......that's funny!! Here in Florida, we think it's the Skunk Ape! For my job today, we took 20 people on a 12-mile hike in a section of the land we help to preserve & protect (60,000-acre watershed) and it was great. Got to see at least 100+ gators and they were soaking up the sun. We also got to see 5 cottonmouth snakes.....gotta love Florida!! Cheers, Brenda |

Veteran 580 | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Thanks again everyone. I appreciate your concern and well wishes very much. Still in the hospital. They think it is viral (she now has a rash all over her body). She still can't sit up without passing out but at least her temp is down. Poor thing has been like a pin cushion with all the blood that they have had to draw. Still managed to get a 2:45 ride and 30 min brick run in. Have an hour ride, a 1:10 run and 2400 swim (which I missed on Friday) tomorrow. I will be using my new Finis Agility Paddles tomorrow and am not looking forward to that. For those who struggle (like me) with EVF, they are supposed to help and help one develop a good feel for the water. In reality, I think they will be devices of torture. Will let you know how it works. |

What does EVF mean? I remember when my daughter got sick and then became covered from head to toe in a full body rash, and there was nothing the dr's could do or diagnose other than tell me they thought it was viral. Nothing makes a parent feel more helpless than when the Dr's cant even help. I can't remember if the rash started on her extremities then moved inward or started on the stomach/back and moved outward. I have photos somewhere because it freaked me out and I wanted to document it all. Hope Sam is up and felling better soon. Crazy viruses! |

26 , Florida | Subject: RE: Scott and Kelly's Mentor Group- Closed Chris, My next Tri isn't until September and that's a sprint. Even though I don't have a tri in the near future, I don't want to give up the biking and swimming. I do have 2 half marathons coming up in March & April. Did an 8.5 mi run today and felt great.....could have done a half today. That's one of my tests when I'm doing my longer runs - I ask myself "could you do your half today?" Today was definitely yes. I felt so good that I went with one of my running buddies to a boot camp class immediately afterwards. Turned out to be a great class because we did a lot of core. When you listed your runs I didn't really understand the 2:10?? etc. Please explain. Thanks, Brenda Edited by Brendab 2014-02-02 8:01 PM |

2:10 was his long slow day. Chris has actually outlined a really good formula for getting to a run race while continuing to tri. 1 long day, 1 recovery day (as slow as you can run w/o walking), and one or two tempo/interval days. |
