I am on vacation as well, so can that be my excuse, too?

I had planned today to be somewhat productive around the house, but instead I have spent it hobbling around. What is more sad than that, is regardless of all this pain today, I cannot wait until the next race!

Hope you heal quick! Smile

Here's a swimming question:  Should the hip rotation be quick, kind of like a snap, or slower, more fluid-like?

I can't tell you the "correct" answer, but for me personally it's fluid.  Nothing I do in the water is "quick" and snappy because that causes turbulance.

Here is something about distance I am curious about. In the last six months, I feel like I have made great strides in my general fitness level.  I really have not gotten much faster, but I can go farther.  How long should it take a normal (and I know I am not normal-save it Aaron) person to be able to jump to the "next" distance..Oly..or HIM?  If I keep this pace up and use the 10% rule, would it be safe to try to do a HIM next June???

I welcome your opinions, comments, and/or insults....

Thanks Dan!  I just realized that matches up with something I wrote in my log this morning that I started to swim better towards the end.  I was getting tired during the swim, and I was purposely trying to rotate quickly (but keep my stroke under control and stretch it out).  As I tired out, my rotation slowed down, then I actually started doing better.  That makes sense now.  Smile

Mine is slow and only as much as is natural.  I absolutely swim (and run) faster the second half of my workouts.  Runs are on hold righ now though....my knee feels like I need to "crack" it like when your knuckles feel like they need to be cracked.  It really hurt a few days ago with every step and I had to stop after 1.5 miles.  Not sure what's going on with that, so I swam today.  I thought kicking gently might work it out.  No such luck.

My knee felt like that.  Then I heard a loud "pop" and had reconstruction for a torn ACL...Be careful...

Re: overtraining.....

I am trying to figure out exactly what to do for my "race season" as far as training and would love your input.

So far I have been doing a 4-wk training cycle, increasing 10% each week and dropping 40% week 4...like the BT training plans recommend. I have three weeks until my first triathlon. I am in week 2 (ending Sat) so will increase 10% next week. Then, I am planning to taper 25% the following week and then another 25% the week prior to my race. I will then have 3 weeks until my second tri--how should I train in between races? And again, following that race, I will have 4 weeks until my final tri of the season. Suggestions? They are all sprint distance, by the way.

Thanks, and good luck to anyone racing this weekend!!

What do you guys do for water on longer runs. I really had a problem yesterday with being dehydrated. I started to smell an ammonia odor which I am now told is a really bad sign...

Should I stash it along the route before and hope Al-Queda does not put anthrax in it or good citizens throw it away?? I have a camelback that I use for riding, but running it would bounce around way too much and give me more nipple-iptus!! Whatever smart comment you have Aaon, save it and go to some rub and tug to get your cramps worked on

Hey Gator,
When I was training for my half marathons, I did stash water/gatorade-type drinks along the way. It took some planning and I had to pick my route, but that worked fairly well. Those little bottles work well and you can mix up some drink you like in them and they go into the recycle bin/garbage container easily.

I am on rest and recoup for the time being. If one doesn't run for a month, would one be able, in about a month, post recovery, to complete a small sprint? Despite my swimming woes, I did sign up for another one!

Just a random thought on the running and stashing drinks, could you run by Quikie Mart type places and just carry a couple of bucks and donate the change to some cause jar they have by the register? Then, you could use their bathrooms......

You could just wear a hydration belt.

Could you run by friend's houses or workplaces or something like that and get some water there? Or have someone meet you at a planned intersection or two with fresh supplies? I have yet to run far enough to worry about that! Good for you for doing that!

Swim question--how do you keep track of laps? I've never had to count how far I have gone--I keep trying to count my laps from the dock to the buoy, but always lose track when focusing on my form (or the huge waves hitting me, like today). Not that it matters that much right now, since I just need to put in the time, but it would be nice to have some idea of how far I am going. I've never been a pool lap swimmer, so it's a new skill.

I always loose track too...I go out with the intention of counting but always forget as soon as I get tired or start to loose form. Curious to see a more seasoned triathletes response.

I, too, loose track of my laps, on occasion. I actually bought this little lap counter from an internet company Swim2000.com. It's this simple little device that fits on your finger and you press a little button each time you end your lap, so it counts them for you....if you remember to press the little button. I have had it for several years and the battery is still going strong, but the little elastic band succumbed to the chlorine exposure. You could calculate how fast you swim 50 m or 100 m and then multiply that out to some distance (say 2 minutes for 100 meters, so 20 minutes for 1000 meters), and just swim for the time instead of the distance. Good swimming to you!

Medusa_Ann - 2007-07-08 8:20 PM Swim question--how do you keep track of laps?

It usually goes something like this...

"One.... two..... three.... damn, did I just do three and am on four or is three... crap... "

I second the hydration belt.  You can carry gels n' stuff on them too, not to mention money, your ID, etc.  They look goofy as hell, but they work and they are not completely uncomfortable.

If it's going to be a hot, long run - I have gotten pretty comfortable holding a water bottle/gatorade, etc.. I know that's probably not for everyone, but it's cheap and it works.

How did everyone do this weekend? I had a great time at a sprint here on LI and did pretty well..considering I haven't been putting in the hrs of training I'd like to!

Just to put my 2 cents in.  In regards to hydration, a fuel belt works well, but I find it to be cumbersome.  I run with a hand bottle  now.  Essentially, it's a strap that you can put around a smaller water bottle and  strap it to your  hand.  No need to keep your hand clamped down on the bottle because it won't slip out.

Gator, send me a PM and I can donate my 6 bottle fuel belt to you if you want.  I haven't used it in moons and if you'll use it, you can have it. (Plus it's one less thing for the movers to take)

Lap counting is an art form IMHO.  I keep repeating the number in my head and still screw it up.  I have learned to use my lap counter on my watch.  Granted, I do this for sets because I am usually good at remembering my laps up to about a 500.  I count each time I hit the wall I start at.  ie a 500 is going to be a count of 10.  Plus I know "about" how long it should take me.  If I forget, I ALWAYS go with the lower number.  Example:  if I don't know it that was #7 or if I'm on #7, then I redo #7.

I got a $30 watch from target that you can use to count laps and it keeps time. I never take the thing off..it is completely waterproof, and there is a big button to make counting laps easy.

It is called a Timex IronMan Triathalon. I couldn't do it otherwise. Best $30 I have ever spent.

I think about the yards and the lengths that I'm on (in 2's or 50's).  So after 10 (or whatever number) of lengths, I'll be thinking 10, until I get back to that side and go to 12 (I never have the odd number in my head).

The other thing that helps is the clock is in a very good spot at my pool.  I always start on that side and I know that I'm down and back in 55 secs to 1 min (50 yds) for most drills.  I'm keeping track of that.  So if I lose track, I just simply look at the clock, and if it's somewhere between 4 1/2 to 5 mins, I know I've done 10 lengths.

I just saw a swimming plan that has different strokes, and patterns and...

all I've been doing is swimming. If the plan says to swim for 39 minutes, thats what I do. Crawl for 39 minutes. I sometimes stop at the end of the lane and take a minute or so break to catch my breath, but other than that, I just...swim. Oh.

And since I don't know how to 'flip' at the end of the lane, I usually just swim to the end of the lane, touch it, stand up, punch my lap counter thing and then turn around and start swimming again.

Am I training wrong?

Hey everyone!

I am finally re-settled in Texas so my goal for this week is to find a gym I like and can afford and join it. I hope to be back to regular workouts next week.

I hope everyone's training is going well. Good luck to anyone who is racing this weekend, and I can't wait to catch up with everyone!
