Julie - If it is a sprint tri I think you could be ready. I thought my weakest thing was the run, and maybe it was in a way, but the scariest and you know what I'm going to say, it was the swim/water, I think you need to feel like you can swim non-stop for 40 min. in like waters, and you also need to swim with a group to get the feel of people around you touching you and maybe hitting you. I want you to feel confident when you go in that water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So only you will know when that is, and don't rush things, you will always have the excited/nervous feeling when you do a Tri, but you shouldn't feel dread. So follow your gut and you won't go wrong.

Your Tri-Sister has spoken.

Julie,

Amy is right.  You want to be very comfortable.  I am very comfortable in the water (I'm a lifeguard and have always been a swimmer) and the open water swim made me a little nervous but I was so excited it didn't matter.  I know you will do great!

Yea, Pam gets the dumb barbie award today with thinking SD was South Dakota.  Oh boy...I think my brain has gone on vacation.

Have a great night everyone!

Thanks Amy (tri sister) LOL

It is final...I am going to compete and finish in my first sprint tri. I just got off the phone with my Ironman brother and he told me that I will be ready to do a tri by March or April...I say April :p).

Amy (San Diego) (sorry not South Dakota like you thought Pam)....lets sign up for a sprint tri in say April. Are you in?  Anyone else in for a race in southern San Diego in April?

Emerson - how was your first swim class? I actually spoke to the masters coach today as he taught a class. I poached a lane in the pool near them and listened to what he had them do. I think I will join. I need the help. Hope your class was successful.

Hope everyone got in a good work out. I just returned from a four mile jog and then hopped in the outdoor pool (was a balmy 49 outside) and swam a little over 750 meters. Just as I was finishing it began to sprinkle...perfect timing!

Going to build a fire....and read my book. Have a great evening everyone!

The tahoe is work issued....it's about 4 years old and has 90,000 miles on it. We drive them pretty hard but it's still in pretty good shape.  It tends to burn up gas though.  I don't run a whole lot of lights and sirens in it, which is much harder on the vehicle and fuel mileage, mostly commuting back and forth to work, but it does good to go 325 miles total on a tank.  Usually I need to fill up around 250 miles (but I also don't let it get below a 1/4 tank)

Sorry I've been awol the last 2 days.  Getting towed to work threw me off yesterday and then I worked last night.  Today, I overslept and then had a meeting with my coach plus some running around for work.

As of right now, I'm registered for 2 HIM's, 3 sprints, and an Olympic.  There are 2 mores sprints and another Olympic that I'm planning on doing but they don't close out as quickly.  The local company hosts most of the races for NC/SC/VA.  They are so popular than a bunch of their races fill up in less than 24 hrs.  We got lucky and figured out last night and tonight that the registration actually opened an hour earlier than advertised.  By the time 7pm rolled around (the official time), I was totally done with registration.  Now, I'm even more psyched up!  I'm ready to race.  Plus, I had a long meeting with my coach today. Looks like I'm going to do at least 2 half-mary's between now and my HIM in May to beef up my running experience/mileage.  Should make for a full year.

To Julie and everyone else, thanks for all the encouragement in my first swim with the Saddlebrooke masters group today.  The coach was very helpful and it went well.  I had not swam freestyle in a lane since middle-school and that was a while ago.  It went much better than expected.  I did about 550 yards with a lot of interruption for instruction.  I can see kicking a regular workout to 800 in pretty short order and 1,000 after that.  It felt good but boy did I get winded fast.  I will need to develop a whole new set of muscles... finish a marathon and get winded at 100 yds in the pool.  Well, that is what training is for...

Again, thanks to everyone for the posts.  It helped a lot at getting me into the pool.

You are all good folks and I appreciate it.

Hey Julie,

Here is the link for the race. It is April 20.

http://www.kleinclarksports.com/deserttriathion.html

It is not in San Diego. It is about 2 1/2 hours away. In the Palm Springs area.

edited to add ( I have not committed to this race. It is a distance and I have to think about child care. Just on the wish list for now. But if you twist my arm )

The Spring Sprint Tri is in San Diego on May 4th if you are flexible with your time and want to race in San Diego.

Here is a link for a local company. There are several races listed there.

http://www.kozenterprises.com/topnav/calendardf84.htm

I would love to race with you and your daughter.

Also Sunday April 13th there is a 5k mud run. I want to do it, but I may not be able. But there is a kids 1k that I will have the kids do if I cannot race.

http://www.sandiegomudrun.com/

I hope this helps

Hey Amy - thank you for the wealth of information! I am not sure that I am interested in the one in Palm Springs as much as the ones near San Diego. May works for me. ;o) more training days. I will look at these links you sent tomorrow. I am about to go lounge in front of the fireplace....have a great evening and thanks again for the info...I too, would like to be able to compete in a race with you. GO TWISTED BLISTERS!

You'd think all that cardio would help in the pool wouldn't you?  It's amazing how different each activity is and although our overall cardio helps our body still has to learn to adapt to each individual exercise.  My wife found this out the hard way too....she was complaining all day about being sore after swimming on Wed for the first time.  It will get better.  All the cardio you've developed from running will kick in and help you advance faster but you just have to get those muscles developed.  It's great that you're working wtih a coach. That should help you get into good habits, which should make you more efficient.

Good Advice Eric....I met my coach yesterday and look forward to some good sound advice! My brother said he sucked and hated swimming until he got a coach and learned better technique....now he loves swimming! and he is very FAST!

So, Amy San Diego and I have decided to do a race in April or possibly May...we are looking at our options and will be deciding in the next few days....so, anyone else ready to take the tri plunge (pun intended)? Looks like San Diego is where we are looking to compete. Hope we can get a few of you to meet us there....It will be fun....

Did I just say that?

I meant....it will be fun to see you!

Have a great work out today! Go out and reach your goals! Only you can do it!

Nice job Eric. I actually felt pretty good yesterday. I love that I am figuring out the breathing...it makes the lap seem soooooo much shorter! I am finally getting where I can swim more then just one lap at a time before stopping...will I ever get to where I feel I can swim free style for more then a few laps!?!? I guess that is why I need to not only talk to a swim coach but actually suck it up and join a masters swim team...I think I will join you guys and join my class this week!

HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SUPER WEEKEND!

Hey All, Sorry I haven't been up on the boards lately. Worked the last 8 nights. I was to work tonight as well but I said "uncle" and someone is covering my shift tonight. The last couple of nights have been BRUTAL!!! The whole county has been on divert(not able to take ambulances), and yes Eric we always take Medic rigs, whether we're on divert or not.
Glad to see you all are keeping up with the posts!!
Emerson glad to hear you're in the water, I did update my email.
Good luck with the challenges this month. I hope everyone has a great weekend. I've got the next SIX days off!!! I've off to the store to get a step box that I paln to use in between my sets when I'm lifting. I have big thighs but not what I would classify as strong thighs and I'm hoping the step box will help me build strength in the quads for running and climbing hills on the bike.
Have a great Friday all!!! Chris

Before you know it you'll be doing 2 laps and then 5 and then 500 yds....the biggest thing is getting your form right now. The longer you go, the easier it is to get sloppy.  Sloppy usually means slower and having to work much harder.

I was pleasantly surprised by my short distance speed today.  That hasn't fallen off, I was turning 100's in 1:30's.  The problem is that I could do that for 1-100 but then my times started jumping for any subsequent 100's in a set.  That's an issue of being out of swim shape.  Back to basics for a while to get that issue corrected.

Hey! I saw that! LOL

Actually, I've been really busy at work, too. Between the challenge and work -- and occasionally trying to get a workout in.... well, I've been pulling my hair out.

As for being third in posts counts -- let me point out that BETH is on Yanti's team (TriAya). So without even looking, I'm willing to bet that they have the #1 position for post count. LOL

I'm guessing that 2nd is probably Mila and Sal (MilaMinute and Sparco).

Unfortunately, I didn't get to swim today. I've got a lot of work to do this weekend, too.

That said, I WILL be swimming this weekend. Also, I have a side-challenge with another BTer, which means I need to run at least 7 times this month. (Go ahead and laugh all you want. If you look at my log, it won't take long to see that I'm not a runner.)

And today is Friday, so of course, I had to find some glitter for you:

Hi Mike!

The challenge uses monthly totals.

You can log onto the Google spreadsheet, or you can have Kendra (our team captain) enter the numbers for you.

Either way will work.
