Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello all!!! I am baaaaack...Yesterday's race was fun. It's so different going when you aren't racing. Val was uptight and nervous because her last long run was tough (learned a nutrition lesson the hard way)...she was sure it was going to be awful going through this one park toward the end, because it had been awful before. Well, she was wrong We waited for her husband and our other friend to finish (they walked it) and then had a good relaxing day and early bed last night. Now I have to orgainze for the week. UGH. Back to life, back to reality. Will get back to inspires and checking blogs soon! Hope everyone is enjoying a nice long weekend (at least those living in this country |

push-up day!!!!! Mimi started it (stop and do 20 3x a day) and then my trainer upped the ante yesterday challenging me to get down lower (wants me to touch my chest to an object) and then texting me today to make one set 30 instead of 20. I have VERY LITTLE upper body strength, at least in comparison to my lower body, and so this has been a real challenge for me, but something that I am very happy to have started...for obvious reasons. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm here!! With a dinner report. The evening starts at the wine bar with tasting of whatever strikes you and appetizers of crab cakes, baked bried in a puff pastry, candied pecans, 10 different kinds of cheese and artichoke dip with pita chips. I had some of all. And several 'tastings' of wine. Once seated, the very enthusiastic wine maker (lord, she has the best job ever and won't let you forget it!!) introduces the chef and the owner and we begin with the chef's version of shrimp scampi. Its seasoned (all I can remember is the paprika) and served sort of like bruscetta--garlic toast and tomatoes with grilled shrimp. The wine selection was a white, but I without the menu in front of me I can't remember which one it was. The next course was a spinach and palm heart salad with a citrus vinegrette, seems so simple and totally outstanding. With the Artic Fox, a sweet white that normally I wouldn't really enjoy but with the citrusy dressing is a match made in heaven. Third course was scallops over mushroom risotto. The scallops were great, lightly seasoned and cooked just right, the mushrooms had been sauteed with a light hand, but the risotto was undercooked. I'll forgive the chef, the kitchen he hwas to work in no better than the average household kitchen (and worse than many houses!!) and cooking risotto so that 30 diners can have it at the same time is very challenging. Good flavor, just not quite done. Fourthe course was a coffee crusted (sounds crazy, but is outstanding) tenderloin with seared green beans and artichokes. Again, delicous. With the Merlot and a Reisling (both worked very well!!) Dessert was molten lava cake, but not red as advertised, with coffee custard and a tawny port. This was my favorite pair, not because it was dessert, but because I'm not a fan of port and they matched the flavors of this so well that I became one. It was one of those eye opening wine moments, where the food makes the wine better and the wine make the food better and completely understand the flavors and undertones of each. We usually get 20% off wine purchased that night, so we bought several bottles of hte Pinot Noir Reserve (normally $75). They only made 42 cases of this stuff and it may be the best wine I've ever tasted. I'm aslo feeling rather whale like right now and still can't run. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Krakatoa - 2008-02-17 10:49 AM I actually hate the Yankees with a passion, but I like these movies. To me, the Yankees became hate-able in the early 70s. Anything before that (Ruth, Gehrig, et al) are okay (-: Living with a guy from NY, one has to be a Yankees fan. I've been pleased to hear that Pettite is owning up to his part in the whole doping thing. Clemens, however, continues to be a jerk.
And yes, I'm drooling about that dinner too! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() GUESS WHO KNOWS HOW TO CHANGE A FLAT ALL BY HERSELF???????? It is a big day for this girl, who previously had never even put the bike on the trainer or taken the tire off (yes, I always recruited someone for these tasks- I know, I'm pathetic). I am so excited! And proud! However, should I GOD FORBID ever get a flat in a race, let's just say adding that amount of time onto my overall time would not be pretty, so I would probably lie and tell people I just wrecked |
|
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() my first flat took me 1.5 hours to change at HOME!! yikes. I still think it would take me a while, but congrats big girl ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was 39 minutes from pulling it off the trainer to getting it back on. And had to go look for baby powder, watch the tire changing video again, get the pump....so you make me feel a little better. Still, I'd like to never have to do it under duress.... |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() At least you didn't do the crybaby act and rant and rave and throw your crap around because you got a flat -- as Normann Stadler did at Kona!! I liked the guy until Is aw his meltdown on the side of the road. I've tried to tell myself, "Bob - don't be too judgmental -- after all, the man spends every waking minute dreaming of winning at Kona again....imagine how hard it must be to deal with a flat...and then another....." But in the end, I can't talk myself out of thinking the guy's a wanker. I wish he'd just fixed the flats, said a prayer for the thousands of children who die every day from a lack of proper nutrition, and then just went on his way, doing the best he could to be a HUMAN champion.......but he didn't. That's a long-winded tribute to your changing your tire!! CONGRATS!! It gets easier every time. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I must admit, I've never fixed a flat either, or changed a tire, or removed my rear wheel, or set up my trainer. I live in fear of a flat and thank god for cell phones. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kim, That meals made me gain 10lbs just reading about it. I'm also pretty sure I was suppose to be invited. Make sure she doesn't loose my invite next time. Amy- You go girl!!! Awesome job! I was actually a geek and took a mini lesson at the bike store when I bought my bike. I was so proud when it actually happened to me and I didn't have to call home. It was even better when I got to change on of the "guys" tires that I ride with. There is nothing sweeter! |

It's not that easy. If I got a flat in a race, it would become a tour. I've changed many on the road but never practiced it or tried to do it fast. OTOH, I've practiced putting up my ultra-light mountaineering tent in snow and rain many times and can do it in about four minutes from full pack to snug in my sleeping bag. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ummmmmmmmmm.......a 88 minute bike ride and a 45 minute run and hopefully not one but two swims. Although two swims would mean no day off, but having not been in the water for 11 days prior to last night, I am not feelin' the love in the pool. And of course because I live in the North Pole, possibly a ski and a snowshoe. What do all of you folks eat for breakfast? Keep in mind that most days my work outs are done before I eat and then I am starving when I get done. Like today. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My ritual meal during IM training was a BIG bowl of cheerios, and one or two Boosts, depending on how long I was going. I learned to eat BEFORE training (a car needs gas to go, right?). The boosts helped with that, as sometimes I didn't feel like chewing early in the am. Post IM, a regular breakfast may be a boost before swimming, or toast with nat peanut butter and honey, oatmeal, cereal (mini wheats, cheerios or kashi go lean crunch)...And after a workout, if it's long I use Endurox, if not then a yogurt with granola or any of the above. During my 40 days of clean eating, I gave myself an exception for training foods, so I still use the boost. I eat oatmeal, rather than cereal, though, because cereal is pretty processed |

Keep in mind that most days my work outs are done before I eat and then I am starving when I get done. Like today. My typical breakfast is 2 fried eggs and some sort of cereal -- Cheerios on work days, oatmeal on days off when the kitchen is clean. Sometimes I'll also have a banana on the drive in. I do my running in the morning before breakfast; so those days I get up at 5:00 and am out the door ASAP. I also have to have everything (clothes, lunches, etc.) pretty well organized the night before because I have to be out the door, with both girls dressed and in tow by 7:00. (6:50 would be even better, but at least they don't squawk when I come screaming in 10 minutes before I start teaching the kids at 8:00) |

With child #1's strep, I am woefully behind on meeting my goal for that Feb. swim challenge. But I shall prevail and not let my team down. Other than that, runs and bikes when I can. A friend has loaned me a "shadow" for the bike -- we may try that out over the weekend with child #2 on the shadow and child #1 on her own bike. Probably along the Rillito Path. (And if the Rillito is still running that will be an added bonus. -- Yes, I live where the rivers are sometimes things. Sometimes they run, and sometimes they don't). |
