Ok, a serious question...

Tell me about your winter gear-your faces, head, spikes for shoes... I'm a total nubie to winter running.. the coldest I've run in (in preparation for my March Half Marathons) was 27 degrees, I think... so not a picnic, but nothing crazy cold. This winter, I'll be running with the group on Saturdays (only last few weeks stuff keeps coming up, like DH's work!), so I really need to figure out extra things I may need...

I *think* I'm ok with the layers.. here is what I'm thinking: bottom- CWX Insulator tights, lighter pants on top, 2 pairs of socks, reg. running shoes; top- UnderArmour Cold Gear mock turtleneck, LS base layer, UA Cold Gear Hoodie, maybe a windbreaker?; gloves, hat... i'm thinking I also need a balaclava or something, right? shoe spikey thingies? What else?

Hi New people.....we are a friendly and lively group...welcome!!!

Lena, I run in pretty cold weather. I DONT like Yaks, the things for your feet. They throw off your gait. I have heard people take the pad inside the shoe out and put sheet rock screws through the sole and then replace the pad ( use old shoes). This helps with traction. I myself have not done this but I am going to try it because running on the treadmill is bothering my knee. The weather really dictates what I wear. I only wear tights unless its windy then I put pants over the tights. I wear and underarmour turtleneck and a windbreaker. Sometimes I wear my Pearl Izumi winter riding jacket if its really cold. Most of the time I wear a headband...if its really cold a balaclava and a headband. I wear the cheap $1 gloves as my hands get hot after a mile...if I drop them no big deal. I will often wear sock liners ( poly pro sock) under my regular running sock to keep my toes toasty. Everyone has different heat/cold tolerance...you have to find what works for you.

Have a great weekend all!!!

While I am totally not qualified for responding about cold weather running, I will anyway.  I am a big layer guy.  I buy $1 gloves at Target or Home Depot in packs of 6-8, like Mav, I can drop them and not feel bad although I honestly have never lost a pair or dropped one.  I stick them in the waistband of my shorts in back and they seem to stay there and not bother me.  This is what I was doing when I lost a nice pair - that's the reason I went to the cheapies.  Also, if your nose runs, use the gloves, throw them in the washer with your running stuff and they just keep getting softer.  Also, I prefer a vest over a windbreaker, it keeps my arms more free -- now obviously, if it was really cold, like what you all deal with, it might be a vest and a windbreaker.

On the challenge....I am on track with running, a few miles short of halfway on the bike and about 1500 short of half on the swim....feel pretty good with where I am right now...

I posted this on my new group this afternoon -

"So here is what I want you to do....post here - get to know each other - be open - be honest - have fun - you all seem to be off to a good start.  Additionally go to the Forum home page, then click Mentor Program Archives and look for left.right.repeat group closed - full of a bunch of winners (it is usually one of the first three or so) and click on it.  Go to the early pages and read some history - see the evolution - go to the most recent pages (209 currently) and work backwards to see where we are today.  You are welcome to post over there too but I would like to personally introduce you so the team today can get to know you all together."

Here are the names of our new people who will be joining us soon - ChrisM, Graham, Phil, Todd, IDMtnGirl, ChristopherM, Glenn, Jennifer, Jeff, Dan, Andrew and Ali.  We may add a couple more - we will see.  I will post their bios here later but if you want to read about them now, go to left.right.repeat group 2011 version on the new mentor group page.

I'm done with the treadmill for the year.  I ran outside today.  Still have a few issues but it won't be because of the treadmills now.

Cold weather gear.  I like to layer.  Under 40, I finally put on pants.  Wink  Under 10 degrees, I put on wind pants over my tights.  Under 30 degrees, I put on three layers on top.  I'm not too picky though.  Usually a short sleeve, long sleeve, and an all weather running jacket that blocks out the wind and it insulated.  Under 10, I switch the long sleeve with a heavier wick away shirt.  I like wearing a neck gator so that I can pull down easy when I get hot.  I usually wear a wick away hat.  I don't have $1 gloves but they are cheap running gloves.  My hands always get hot and I usually take them off and stuff in my waist ban.  I have never worn more than one pair of socks but like my hands, I don't have a problem keeping my feet warm.

I always bring a change of clothes to where my group runs.  We meet over on the Purdue campus and I hate driving home wet so I change in the car.  That is probably the worse part of the entire run.

For the challenge, I have finished the swim, a bit behind on the bike, and way behind on the run.  Still keeping my fingers crossed on the whole running thing.  My gait has changed and I keep pulling my calf muscle now.  Just frustrating.

OK I have a question concerning the 2xIM challenge. For my bike Thursday I took a 1 hour spin class. How do we guesstimate what distance to put down in our log?

Planned doing an 8 mile run but got a bad case of acid reflux part the way into it. I ended up cutting the run short. I hope to make it up tomorrow. It's suppose to rain all day so we'll see.

Hey all!
You have been busy here! Wife has been out of town so just me and the kids.  Been doing a lot of trainer rides and got a nice 6 miler today (evidently Billy and I are in sync today).  Hoping for a long ride tomorrow.

another question.... wetsuits. Talk to me about wetsuits. Which ones are good? which ones are a waste of money? I'd love to one a good one on sale, but I don't want to buy a wetsuit just because it's on sale, if it's junk.

Active.com sent out an email with this sale: http://www.xterrawetsuits.com/Active11/ Worth the money?

THis will be my very first wetsuit, so I really know absolutely nothing about them, so ANY info will be appreciated. I know Mav gave me a couple of pointers last year, but it was so long ago, I forget now (sorry, Marianne)..

Lena... I dont like Xterra...I refer to it as ripterra. I bought one on sale and it didnt last one season...rips everywhere. IMO not worth the money. I have had a Blue Seventy for three years and it is still intact but I had to glue the shoulder seams. I got A LOT of use out of this suit. I OWS from March to Nov several times/week. I recently bought a 2XU and LOVE IT!!!!! Its a little tough to get on but I feel like I just glide in the water and it keeps me very warm.  Blue seventy is the best value for the $$ IMO.

Lena - I have the Xterra long sleeve.  Worked well for me so far.  I had an old Blue Seventy (sleeveless before it).  I have had to do repairs to both but I don't OWS as much as Mav does (mainly cuts not rips).  I do plan on someday getting a nicer wetsuit but for the price I will get a few seasons out of this one.  If you do the BT Annual Member survey they have a pretty decent discount on a wetsuit.

Welcome to all the new peeps!!Smile

I've only had time recently to log my workouts and that's it.  My best friends husband has been very sick.  Saturday they discovered he has cancer on his spine, liver, stomach, lungs and even kidneys.  I have been keeping their 10 year old daughter.  So I've been keeping her busy and making many trips back and forth to the hospital.  Tonight I got my run in while she did her homework and later she went to swim in the waterpark pool at the gym while I swam laps.

Lena, I got my first and only wetsuit from wetsuitrentals.com.  I rented it for my first tri and decided to keep it.  They give you an option to buy and it is reasonable or you can send it back.  I thought mine felt pretty good so I purchased it.  It is an Orca.  It also is long sleeve.  I like the long sleeve because it seems warmer to me.

And I know I'm late to answer the questions about running in the cold.  But I have not been on a treadmill once this year so far.  I pretty much run in the cold unless it is a so many degrees below zero.  I use my underarmour cold gear tights...no pants over them, then just layers on top, (if it is really cold my first layer is the underarmour coldgear mock turtleneck layered with fleece)a warm hat and gloves of course.

Oh and I forgot.  My son, Cameron did put some kind of screws in the bottoms a pair of my old running shoes so when it is snowy and icy I run in those.

Hello everyone,

Got my 2nd official workout in (1.5 mile run and 2.5 mile bike) also just noticed the master swim class at my gym. I'm hoping to swim tomorrow
All my distances are very short I know, but give me time! I'm also looking for the proper gear so keep posting about what to look for (and avoid). I'm hoping to get a bike soon so I can spend less time in the gym and more on the road.

so far feeling great! now looking for a short race in the near future to focus on.
