1)  What do you normally eat before the race?  Multigrain toast with PB
2)  When do you normally eat before the race?  3 hours before

3)  What do you normally drink before the race?  BIG cup of coffee with toast (primarily to get the innards going!)
4)  When do you normally drink before the race? then I sip on HEED just as I see fit; Hammergel 20min before swim start

5)  What do you normally eat during the race (includes all 5 stages)?  nothing for sprint
6)  When do you normally eat during the race (includes all 5 stages)?  nothing for sprint

7)  What do you normally drink during the race (includes all 5 stages)?   nothing in T1, HEED in 24oz aero bottle; water in rear carrier as needed, but usually not
8)  When do you normally drink during the race (includes all 5 stages)?  just during bike, definitely nothing during run (no need for me and just slows me down, interrupts breathing etc.

Thanks guys!  It looks like coffee and peanut butter on some form of bread several hours before the race is the overwhelming favorite.  I'll probably choose Keri's PB on english muffin since the bagel sat like a rock in my belly during the last race.

I will also try one of those gels that everyone seems to mention and stick with water closer to the race start.

PB=fat, sugar and protein so you really can't go wrong there.
I like the English muffin or Ezekiel sprouted bread - the bagel doesn't sit well with me either.
Get a few different brands/flavors of gel/gu - my favorites are Gu brand Roctaine Pomegranite and Hammer Raspberry.  Some others are truly nasty to me.  I tape a gu to my cross bar - I always bring a roll of tape and I can tell you while setting up TA I was miss popularity with that roll of tape.  You can see my gu in this pic.  I open the gu ahead of time so I just peel it off and suck it down then I cram the empty wrapper in my shorts so I don't litter.

I vote we keep this going until at least December.  I have only done one tri so far and have scheduled another for this Sunday.  I am not sure how many more I will do this year but I still have been asking lots of questions and have been getting valuable info.

I suppose at some point everyone's questions will diminish but until that happens ...

I vote we keep the group going.  We're having too much fun to "disband".  Obviously if anyone wants to leave, they can, but I am willing to stick around if others are.

Hey mentors, I think I read in your blog that you are going on vacation for a couple of days.  Have a great time and don't do anything that we wouldn't do!

As for me, I plan on going for broke in the swim segment this Sunday.  I think I can do a lot better there and in both transitions.  I doubt I can do much better in the bike and run as I have only had two weeks and I purposely curtailed my running this week.

I think this tri will be about 50% smaller than the last one, so it should a little more organized.  It's funny, last time I dreaded the swim and now I am dreading the run!

Bon voyage,

I think I did better in this one (swim went much better).  The results won't be posted until tonight.  I will fill out my race report tomorrow.

Good for you - glad to hear the swim went better.  Looking forward to the RR.

I would like to suggest that we open up the group.  Let's face it folks this is a VERY slow group compared to other mentor groups and I for one would like more chatter.  It would also be lovely to have another girl in the mix.

Tim or Laura,

Frederick is hilly.  I LOVE hills.  but with some of the steeper climbs (15-20+ grade) the 11-25 just doesn't cut it.  I don't want to go compact crank (too expensive) so I'll leave that at 53-39.

would an 11-27 or 12-28 make a big difference?  I realize with the 12 I'll lose a little top end, but I'm not often spinning that gear anyway.

thanks!

I think it would be great to open up the group.  The more the merrier!  I'm sure there are people who were not able to get into a mentor group this past spring.  Perhaps a post in one of the forums to gauge interest (as long as it is chill with mentor Tim)?

I think it would certainly help.  The only crazy big hill I road down your way was Harp Hill Rd.  I road it with a 53-39 and a 12-27.  I was begging for more still.  If I were riding a lot in your geography, I'd prob get a 12-28 if changing cranks was not an option.

I agree about the 11 v 12.  You won't lose too much.  Plus if you can always flip-flop your cassettes depending on the ride (e.g. you head to the shore)

You guys think we should open up the group now or should we wait until the next official mentor season starts?

I vote now too (we need some more females to balance the group).  Why wait 2 - 3 more months?

I think Keri mentioned that she has an Aero bottle?  Is that an aerodynamically shaped bottle or is it a bottle that allows you to drink (with some kind of straw mechanism) without interrupting your cycling?  I am looking for ways to increase my drinking on the bike and am wondering if an aero bottle will help.

By the way, thanks for those rubber band tips, I was number #1 in my age group in my last T1, even with a slight sneaker faux pas!  My speedier transititions helped me shave over 8 minutes off my prior sprint tri time.  I looked at 6 other age group winners who competed in both of my tri's (i.e. Belmar & Asbury) and noticed that the most any of them had improved was 4 minutes or so.  All of this groups advice is really paying off!

Thanks Laura.

Anyone have trouble with the pace calc function in your training log today?  I can't seem to get ot to calculate my running pace!  I am going to send a message to BT tech support.

Charlie - the calc function wasn't working for me yesterday either so it's not just you.

If you take a look at my pic on the previous page you can see my aero bottle with light blue liquid in it - watered down gatorade.  I keep gatorade in the aero and water in my water bottle because although I know I need some calories on a sprint or long ride I also really want water as well.  My bottle was $19.99 and worth it's weight in gold!!!

I see, that white thing is the straw (ever get poked in the eye?) and the bottle attaches to your handlebar or aerobars.  Can you send me a link for the product or tell me where you purchased it?

They appear to have fixed the autocalc function.

Hey, good luck in your tri this weekend.  You are doing the same thing I did, two tri's within 3 weeks!  Is your sprint swim really a half mile?

Thanks,
