i finally gopt in run today last week was busy with work i had a meeting in Sault Sainte Marie Wednesday (4.5 hour drive) and then Port Security Training Thursday and then I was 6.5 hours away in Escanaba from Fri thru Sun working on the ice in both bays for ice fishing enforcement with our ATVs

so it was nice to get home last night and wake up to not have to go anywhere and have time to run

So today is the start of a new day, week and month. Anyone have new goals?
My goal is to be more consistent with training and to have more miles this month than I did last month by at least 10%. For me consistent means I need to have at least 4 more days of training this month than I did last month.

So how about you???

This is going to be a challenging month to workout.  I am going to FL for 6 days this Wednesday and then to Haiti for 8 days on the 19th.  My first race is May 8th, a 25k.  My goal for this month is  to schedule my runs well, so as to at least get my Tempo and Long Run in each week.

My goal is also to be more consistent and get a few more brick workouts in.  I am not sure where I can find the time but that is the goal, right?  I signed up for a tune up 1/2 marathon at the end of the month.  It will be interesting to see what happens.  This would be a "C" race.

my goal is to get in some type of activity each day!  Whether it's a run, a ride, a swim,  or some other type of cardio

Hi all,

I'm back. We lost power for most of last week, got like 5' of snow, now everything is a big mushy muddy snow pile. Training has been non-existent, school and family life has been taking priority lately. But good news is that I got a nice big check of grant money back from school, and I'm going to use some of it to register for my races, and maybe buy an xterra wetsuit, and maybe do a little bike maintenance.

We taught our 2 year old how to ski last week, that was awesome. She had no fear at all, and did super! Thank goodness she was on a little leash though, there was no stopping her.

Glad your back! Sounds like you have been busy. Sounds like some retail therapy is in order.

As I was going back and forth in a pool I thought of a question for everyone. What do you do specifically to make your self faster...not just maintain current fitness but rather able to beat a previous time etc. Any thoughts?

How do I increase my speed?  It's all about intervals.  It doesn't matter if you are swimming laps, running or biking.  Speed play gets your fast muscle fibers twitching and use to running/biking/swimming at a faster pace.

Running it's 800 repeats
Swimming it's 100 yard repeats.  (Though I just started but am working on it)
Biking it's mile repeats.  1 mile fast, 1 mile slow.

I will be gone for a week, so I will not be logging on.  I will try to get in a 20' run a few times for my team, but I am looking forward to 6 days with my family and the sun and Mickey.  Keep up the great work.  You have all inspired me to train better.  Thanks.

I feel a bit like a goof answering the question before others...kind of like the kid in class who always has their hand up first. Trust me...I was always the one ducking down behind the book!!

Re: what do you do to make yourself faster?
Up till this year, I haven't been getting faster. I have subscribed to the high volume, low intensity idea of training and accepted that I was not fast. Period. I haven't worried about it as I am just happy to be out there -- I love the long rides and runs..time to think and just "be".

This season, I got worried about the fact that an illness left me with a DNF in Ironman last year and I really had no idea how to get from unfit to Ironman ready for IMC Canada 2010. So, I took a huge step and signed on with a coach. It is now week 5 of the coach's program, and the difference is unbelievable'! In a good way! It is generally low volume(ie no 4 or 5 hour rides at this point) but a very specific focus for each one hour workout. I am now having trouble doing the long runs because I am having to slow my run pace down . I am amazed. My run pace has jumped up with general fitness improvements--it has been years since I ran 9min/mile with comfort. The amt of time I am putting in is less. I can see that the mental toughness to withstand harder efforts over longer periods is totally improving. And biggest thing is...I believe I can go improve. Up till now, I have just accepted a certain pace...now I see that this body can deliver more if I train it differently and give it rest btwn workouts.

I don't know how my Ironman will go this year--don't know if I will get faster--- but the training is going really well thus far.

Hi all,
sorry, I have been extremely busy also.  Trying to limit my computer time and basically just logging workouts and that's it.

My first race is really a scheduled workout that is 13 miles, so why not do it in a race, I thought!  And, I get to see my roommate from college, kids get to stay in a hotel with a pool, you get the picture!  It's the O'Round the Loch Pikermi on March 20th.  I am getting excited.  The hardest part will be holding back and sticking to my plan of an easy run-not all out!  I am very competitive so this will be a nice challenge!

Taking the stroke development class has helped my speed in swimming.  (I am still not what anyone would call fast, but it's faster for me, and that's what matters!).

Have a great week everyone!

I just reserved a whole block of rooms to be sure!!  Ha Ha!  Stubbing my toe yesterday was not what I was planning two weeks from my first event...I was used to doing some kind of race every month, so I have been going through withdrawals since November.

Excellent...we'll take the room with the jacuzzi and masseuse --teehee...ya right...not in my world!!
I am glad you are so excited that you actually stubbed your toe...um...ouch!! Hopefully it is one of the toes you don't need(have you ever noticed that there is not a toe that you don't actually need...any toe when it is out of comission, causes big problems...wierd).
Hope your toe heals FAST!!

exactly!  I almost called my friend and cancelled my long run on Sat., but taping and some ibuprofen did the trick, I also iced it and it wasn't bad until the last couple of miles.  It was uncomfortable, but not screaming at me.

so, I am debating on Thursday if I should ice skate.  I am afraid I might break my leg-an arm would be okay, cuz I could still run, ha ha ~!

hi all,

been quiet for a while...lots going on...buying a house...closing tomorrow...work has been nuts and busy with the family.  just time to log on and log my workouts.

getting a little burnt out swimming....but biking and running are still good.  put in a 41 mile ride on sunday then tried running for a brick...now i know why they call them bricks!!! my legs were heavy and i was slow!!!

did not have a chance to swim today...been bugging because i sort of didn't want to and kept finding excuses...need to make sure i stop that!!

power intervals in the morning...those are killers but they help!

keep it up everyone!
