Regarding the bike.  I really need to pace myself herer.  I think I could get into trouble if I push it too hard.  If I have wind behind I'll take advantage of it and go a bit harder, but other wise I am looking for Mid 19's MPH.  Course if pretty flat with a couple rolling hills.

That's a very good thought, Brian.  In general, of course, you want to even out your effort.  But you get MORE benefit for added effort in situations where wind resistance is less of a factor.  That means:  up hills and when you have a tail wind.  In those situations, you should go a little harder (emphasis LITTLE! -- you still have to pace yourself!).  The tough one is into a headwind.  We all have a tendency to push the effort into a headwind, but ironically, this is the time to back off a little.  (I have made this mistake TOO many times!)   The reason is that you are getting LESS benefit for your added effort (because air resistance goes up roughly as the SQUARE of the velocity).  Save that added effort for a spot where it will do more good.

sstucker - 2010-05-26 11:19 PM Michael, glad to see things are progressing. Did a 38 minute run just before the heatwave yesterday, and tonight a 35 minute swim. Tonight was great for I found my rythm. Somehow during my 200m drill I was thinking about the PROs look like during the swim, how their stroke look like and was trying to picture me doing the same. For some reason I starting thinking about when I did some kayaking with, for lack of proper word, the two headed paddles and how I stroked from one side to the other. Well somehow I incorporated that in my swim stroke and well I found my rythm. I did 50m slowly then tried it in the 4x25 set. WOW! that was a cool feeling. My 200m cool down went so fast without any effort. All I want to do is go back out tomorrow night, it just might happen if time (wife) permits Expecting thunder showers tomorrow so will probably not be able to get out for a run at work

Sounds like a swimming form breakthrough Sylvain!  I love it when that happens!  The hard part is then making what you learned a a 'natural' part of your stroke.  This can take a while.  You have to focus on it for a good long time (weeks) before it becomes a part of your natural stroke.  That's one reason that people say (very reasonably in my opinion) that you should not try to make too many form improvements at once.

Experior - 2010-05-26 7:00 PM  I have an Oly coming up too -- the weekend after yours.  I have my doubts that I'll finish -- I'll probably do the swim and bike then DNF.  (I've already paid for it so I'd like to get SOMETHING out of that entrance fee!

It is too bad you can't get a refund or transfer it.  Kind of the tough thing about Tri's the amt. of time and money you put into it and can't compete due to injuries.  Sorry Michael. My wife would be asking me to give it up.

Brian-you will do great in your race-you have a good plan and are prepared.

Sylvain-good job on the swim-that always feels good.  I had a good swim day on Tuesday, just taking it easy and concentrating on technique.  Helps balance out some of those @#$! swim workouts.

Michael-maybe put together a relay for your upcoming race.  Find some fast local runner to do the run after you do the swim/bike?

Everything is fine with me down here on the Gulf Coast-just been on the road a good bit with work.  Did a brick with 2 mile run off the bike Tuesday night and felt surprisingly good.

Take care all

Randy, that is a great idea regarding Michael and a relay.

It so satifying to come off the bike a feel great isn't it.  My last brick I bonked right at the end due to not having any nutrition right after the bike.  I guess you have to experience some failures to figure out what you need to change.

Yes, relay s a good idea.  Even better if I could find a really fast swimmer to join in!  We'll see how that goes...

I gave myself a birthday present today -- a really hard hill repeat ride.  It's the first time I really trashed my legs in a while and boy did it fell good (in a sort of painful way...).

Have a great weekend everyone!  Anyone have big training plans for this weekend?  I think I'm going to try a long ride.

Hey guys!
I had the MRI yesterday- will see the Dr next week for results. I got a swim and pool run in today. I'm still holding out hope thatI'll be able to do the Tri in August.

Weekend plans- my husband has gigs all weekend. I'll be taking my two youngest up to my in-laws camp on Sunday. No other definite plans yet. How about every one else?

We've got friends coming from France on Monday and a house and yard that has been ignored by all members of my family since the semester began, so I may be trading in long ride/runs for long chore lists... but that's okay... we *REALLY* need to make some progress on doing some serious Spring cleaning, so I'm glad we've got a hard reason to do it.  The following weekend is my daughter's graduation and it looks like we'll be hosting the party for some of her friends and their families... fortunately, none of them have seen the house (yet).  So you all put in the long training hours for me, k?  I'm going to see if I can maintain some basic training for the next 10 days and then maybe I can get in two solid weeks before I'm out of town again.

In my book, serious yard work is training.  It may not be sport-specific, but yard work will toughen you up like nothing else.

Heidi-hope you get good news next week. Frustrating, I know!

We are headed to the in laws in Monroeville, Alabama (setting of To Kill a Mockingbird) tomorrow.  Only about 1.5 hours.  Will be home Sunday and back on the road Tuesday to go pick up son from school in Chattanooga.  So, should be able to train pretty regularly for next few days and then likely just running while in Chattanooga.

Its Friday!

Heidi,

I hope that you get some good news from the doc.  You could always try an in-pool triathlon: Laughing

Swim

Bike http://www.poolbikemc.com/

Run: http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/8108173.Blackwood_pair_to_run_marathon_in_swimming_pool/

As for me, I didn't have enough time today for a full "Sprint Friday", but I did get in an Aqua-Bike.  I rode to my pool, swam 1/2 mile and then rode back.  We're going to visit some friends tomorrow and then, I too, am completing my patriotic duty and working in the yard for the rest of the weekend...

Have a great weekend everyone,
Mark

Hi everyone.

Good to see lots of training progress out there.

I've been bummed for a few weeks due to a back ankle.  So 2.5 weeks ago I just decided to stop running all together (and stopped biking for a week).  It's taken a long time to get to the Drs.  The Dr did say I've got some issues going on, but was vague and didn't even say what I should do or not do.  Had an MRI on Wed, but can't get into the Dr until next Thursday.  At that point we'll see if this is really "Experior's swimming running mentor group".

My first sprint is in 3 weeks, so I don't know what will happen for that.

Been getting in lots of swimming at least.

Tomorrow I'm heading to the local reservoir (where all my OWS races are) with the family to do some OWS at the swim beach.  Not quite fully like OWS, and only about 90 yds longest straightaway, but it will be my first OWS.

Take care everyone.

Picked up set of clipless shoes and peddles. Can't wait to attached them tonight and hope to get a ride in tomorrow.

Also, did swim workout today. My plan called for a 500m TT session for which I'm happy to say that I broke the 2 minute/100m barrier with a 1:58/100m. I originaly wanted this back in March before my training broke apart but still happy that I finaly did it. Maybe by end of June I'll get under 1:50.

Hey gang,

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

Brian, best of luck in your oly.  You've really been dedicated in your training and I'm sure you're going to do quite well.  You've put in the work, now it's time to have fun and enjoy the race!

I've gotten over the shin splints just in time to develop that oh-so dreaded cycling-specific malady.  Let's just say I had to resort to Phil's 'secret' method for dealing with it...and it worked!

Hope y'all have a nice weekend.

My Oly is next weekend, but I wish it were this weekend.   Anxious to get to it.  I have a lnog run tomorrow and long ride yet on Sunday with a swim workout sunday as well.  Then it is taper time.

Had great open water wim this evening with about 8 of us from our local club.  A bit chiily but doable.  Did twice around the reservoir which probably was a half mile each.  Confidence builder.

Nice work on breaking that 2 min. barrier.  Be careful with the new clipless pedals.  They take some getting used to unless you've ridden in them before.  You'll forget when you pull up to stop and realize. uh oh and down you go.   It happens to everyone.

I get the sense that you're on a roll, Sylvain... way to go on breaking the 2min barrier!

A belated Happy Birthday to you, Michael.  Reading your birthday quote reminded me again of what an amazing gift the triathlon lifestyle is for all of us.  Thank you for your gift of inspiration!  It's wonderful to see biking and running in your logs again... here's hoping the good healing continues!

And congrats on finishing up the semester... we're definitely in relief mode around here... there are these two zombies who have turned back into functioning human beings again :-(hope my wife and daughter don't read this site!)

Went for lower end and got the Shimano SH-TR31 tri shoes with PD-R540 pedals. I haven't tried them yet, well not on the road anyway. In garage last night I practiced, while holding wall, securing and removing shoe from pedal. I can't wait to try them on the road and hopefully not forget when I come to a stop.

I tried to go for a bike ride yesterday- got a flat about 2 miles from home and had to walk the bike back. The bike shop is closed for the weekend- so now I wont be aable to get a new tube until Tuesday.
I know-I should have one, but I just never got around to picking it up, or learning how to change one. I guess I'll put that on my list of things to do this week.

I did get to do a 3.3 mile walk/run this morning! So  far my foot feels okay.

Hurrah!

Buy several tubes.  Practice changing the tube.  Be especially aware of not pinching the tube between the rim and the tire or you'll get more practice than you want!

Did my first ride with clipless and.... didn't fall Did get stuck at one intersection where I had trouble releasing but kept balance and luckely no cars arounds. Went for 80 minutes this morning and felt very comfortable with the shoes, still need to learn to pedal properly. I did count my RPM on way out (which is an uphill battle) and was consistent at about 80 most of the time except when going uphill and was at about 16 mph. On way back, on same route out, I didn't keep track of RPMs but was going about 22 mph, of course it was mostly a gradual downhill.

Heidi, glad to hear you got some training in, most of felt good.

Have not posted in awhile. Been getting some decent training in over the last few weeks. Did 32 miles on the road bike this morning. Felt good. The best part is I think my butt is finally broken in. Rode without any sorness and I can sit this evening without any pain. Must be a bike milestone!

Sylvain, no falls? Wow, you must be a better athlete than me. I still have some scabs that are healing. At least I have unclip first, then stop, finally stored into muscle memory. Although, that took a couple of weeks. Surprised

Jumped in the pool this morning for a pace workout. My arms felt tired this morning which I think is from the bike ride yesterday but once I was warmed up they felt better. Anyway, at first I thought I was going to have a hard time finding the 2 min/100m pace in my 10 x 100 set but got it right away so I was able to enjoy the remaining nine sets.

Have a good day everyne.

Phil -- glad to hear that your rear end is now a cyclist as well.  It does take a while.  And meanwhile your secret solution is apparently making the rounds!

Sylvain -- some good looking workouts.  I know you're going to love going clipless!

Color me stupid, but here's a screen shot from my computer just a few minutes ago:

They let you do a pool run for the marathon, right?  Surprised
