I went by my LBS the other day and asked some questions about power meters.  Didn't get to in depth, but they are supposed to check on some things for me.

He mentioned someone is coming out with pedals that will have the power meter built into them.  This sounded interesting to me, as they could be switched out to any bike (potentially).

Any thoughts on this, or anyone know of this?

cornfed - 2010-08-04 10:39 AM Anybody using the Garmin 310XT as their bike computer?  My el cheapo wired computer is starting to flake out on me so it's time to replace it.  I'm looking at the 310xt because it seems like a good choice to double as a running watch too. Only down side is that it ain't cheap.  I'd like to hear experiences, likes/dislikes before getting one.

I am.  It is a good dual use item.  I have the Edge 300 as well, and having both I can say the only thing I really miss with the 310 is that it maxes out at 4 display items on the screen at one time.  (No room for any more).  The larger Edges get 6 comfortably.  It would also be nice if the 310xt had rolling averages (hopefully in a firmware update).

Also, if you do get one I recommend this quick release kit:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CP0MTO/ref=oss_product

It allows you to use the original band and the bike mount is supposed to be better than the other one.

(BTW, on your other post in the main forum about powermeters - I got my powertap in last night.  I'll let you know how I like it once I actually get to use it in anger.  Got a great deal on a used one laced into a very nice wheel that I couldn't pass up!)

Welcome to a new world of pain.    If you haven't purchased it already, I highly recommend buying the WKO software.

No $hit.  The powertab, wheel and computer are going to be about what I spent on the whole bike last year!

I found out that today that anyone can sign up for the USAT sprint national championships.  I would register, but I'm worried I'd finish DFL.  I might have to give it a go since its unlikely I'll qualify for AG Nats at Rocketman.

Sell the Land Rover and just ride your bike to work.  LOL

Funny - looks like all three of us missed the tri ride this week.  I was in Virginia at a meeting - bummer of a day.

I've considered it....If I didn't have two kids to pick up at school occasionaly, it probably would have already been gone.  Of course, it's 12 years old now, so i'd probably be lucky to get $2500 for it.

Maybe I can scrape up some before year end.

Yeah, I ended up working late.  The week isn't starting out like I had planned.  I'm trying to get in all my run/bike workouts on my plan.

Powertap works!  I threw a tire on and went out at 10 tonight (complete darkness on the road) to give her a whirl.   A massive 3:20 long workout (as in three minutes LOL). 199 average watts.  Max 661.  Watch out Cavendish!

Awesome!  I'm 99% ready to buy one.  I talked to a local guy that does nothing but build wheels.  He's checking to see what the best price he can get me on the hub.

When looking at used powertaps, what do I need to look for to make sure the powertap and wheel is compatible with my current bike?  I've got a stock Trek 2.1 currently.  Or if the powertap is already mounted to a wheel, does it matter?

Two real choices - either a wired version that you need a Powertap computer for or an ANT+ compatible one that will talk to Garmins.  My wheel came with the Elite+ (lowest end ANT+ one).  If you go that route you also need to make sure you have a Garmin that does ANT+.  Those are the 310xt, edge 705, and edge 500 if memory serves.

Physically you can get PTs drilled for different lacings - I believe you can get anything from 20, 24, 28, and 32 hole versions.  If you get a new wheel built around them you just get what meets your weight (mine is a 28).  Other than that they are sized for standard bikes - my skewer from my old wheel works just fine.

The only two things that matter are hole count and cassette type.  You need to make sure the number of holes in the hub matches your wheel.  For example, my current rims are 28 hole so I would want to get a 28H hub if I was going to use them my current wheel.  Also make sure you it matches your cassette.  They make hubs that are compatible with either Shimano & SRAM or Campagnolo but they're not interchangeable.  If it's already mounted on a wheel make sure it's the same size.

You can buy a campy model then switch out the freehub body.  I bought a campy wheel/PT, for about 150 less than the sram/shimano models.  Then bought a 39 freehub body and switched it out.

When are you going to do the power testing?  Are you going to do the 20x2, or the 20 and 5 method?

I've almost got everything worked out for the power tap.  The shop is going to cut me a little discount on the powertap.  They're working up a quote for everything right now.  The only question left is which computer to get.  I was looking at the 310xt but now I'm waffling.  It seems like a good all around solution (it would replace my polar rs300x w/footpod I currently use for running).  However, it doesn't have rolling average for power.  From what I've read this seems to be pretty useful.  Should I look at something like the Edge 500 or is there another way to do this by using lap button?

I've got a Garmin 705, stem mounted and it works out really well.  I've got it set up on the dual 8 display.

My 310xt should be in next week, so sorry I can't help you.
