Subject: BamaDC's mentor group is Closed!

NAME: BamaDC / Mark
STORY:
In 2005 my wife (Amanda) wanted to run a Marathon.  And said, “you should do it to.”  So I started training in July of 05 and ran my first marathon in Feb. 06, the Ocala Marathon (4:15:30).

My quick increase in running volume lead to some overuse injuries.  This caused me to start attending spinning classes.  The teachers were all cyclist and they took my under their wings and I started cycling.  And I swam competitively until the 9th grade, so what the heck… I’ll do a triathlon.  I did a few races in 06, nothing that special… well that’s another topic.  I didn’t do/race any tris in 07, because of our first baby and my last year of Professional School.

So in 08 I went all out.  I finished Ironman Louisville in 14:19 and improved my half marathon time by 8 min.  1:50 in Feb 08 to a 1:42 in Nov 08.

2009 was year two.  I finished my second Ironman Louisville in 11:36, first Half Ironman in 5:26, dropped my half marathon time to 1:32 and had my first triathlon top ten overall.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to a felloow triathlete and going on 6 years.  Two sons (Thomas) 3yo, William 1yo and a third due in November.

CURRENT TRAINING: Currently focusing on the Peaking for Disney 70.3.  Major goals of 2010 will be sub 5:00 in a HIM, and Sub 1:30 in a Half Mary

THIS YEAR'S RACES: Mercedes Half Mary 1:34, Hunstville Half May 1:32, Gulf Coast Tri 5:26, IMKY 11:36, and two sprints(1st top 10 OA)

2010 RACES: Mercedes Half Mary(1:31), IMFL 70.3, Music City Tri, Buster Britton Tri, Mountain Lakes Tri, RocketMan Tri, Age Group Nationals, lots of other running and tri events, and maybe IM 70.3 World Championships*

WEIGHTLOSS:  I'm currently at 8.9% body fat and I will be under 7% before IMFL 70.3

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD
MENTOR:  I've got two years of triathlon training and racing under my belt.  I've also been able to do this while keeping a healthy marriage and enjoying my two boys.  I enjoy helping people and let's have some FUN!

If it's not fun, it might as well be a job!

Wow, a fellow Bama person!! Hi, I'm Lora. I live right below you in Grant (Marshall Co). My first tri is in less than 16 hours, the Frank Maples Memorial in Scottsboro!!!  And I'm nervous as heck!!!
I've never done anything like this. I'm 34 going into my first sports event. I'm still recovering from knee surgery, so I am having to relearn and restrengthen my knee to run (which will be interesting on the run tomorrow!). I planned to sign up for the RocketMan, but decided to tone it down for the year because of the running portion and stick to Sprints only (HIWAAY). Anyway, I've really enjoyed the training and hope to continue for as long as I can.

I'd like to check in...

Background:
Use to love running. Always ran. Ran through HS and into College. Tried to mix it up with Crew for a while and really enjoyed it. School came first, so dropped the Crew and kept running.

Started increasing my running and led to injuries. Stress fractures in both legs and just started looking elsewhere. Bought a bike and started spin classes. Figured since I've always swam, and really just needed to ride, I was pretty close to a tri, so why not.

First Tri - 09 - Grandman Sprint Tri and LOVED it! Got hooked. Progressed and raced the Buster Britton Sprint in 09 too. Not a bad series and really enjoyed the outcome.

Family Status - married. 1 kid (little girl) on the way (due late June)

Current Training - finally about to start ramping it up. Been doing sprints and steady training as I can with work. Now I have an opening and time to ramp up and get ready for a couple upcoming Olympics this year.

Races:
Pensacola 5k swim (May), Buster Britton Sprint (June),  RocketMan Oly (Aug), Callaway Gardens (Sept), Montgomery Half Marathon (Oct), Vulcan 10k (Nov).

Weight: 170. I'd love to be at 160 and hold, but the diet is the culprit.

Overall goals: Have fun!

Hi, I'm back!

For the new folks:

Name: Drew (will answer to cornfed).  Live between DC and Baltimore.

Family Status: Married, no kids (the dog is enough to handle)

Current training:  Coming from a relatively short (12 month) running background and trying to transition to triathlons.  Trying to keep my running mileage up while adding in the other disciplines.

2010 Races: Shamrock Marathon (finished, 4:13).  Clyde's 10k (tomorrow), Baltimore 10-miler, Celebration Spring Tri, Nation's Tri (Oly).

Weightloss:  I've lost almost 40 pounds since July 2009.  I'd like to get down to 190.  My wife says I'm too skinny but she'll just have to get over it!

Goal:  Two main goals for the season: 1) Get consistent swimming and biking in while maintaining running.  And do so injury free!  2) Start racing instead of participating.  I don't expect to win but I need to start pushing myself in races.  As Mark says, "learn to love the hurt."

BTW sand101 and LostSheep are from the BHam area.

Huzzah!

Details, man, details.  I see you smoked the swim! I had no idea you were that fast in the water.  We have a group full of swimmers, it seems.

On that note I did 3500 today after my bike ride.  There was a 55 year old guy next to me and he asked if we could do some intervals together.  Sounded good, so off we went.  He started ripping off 2:35 200s.  Egads.  Dude was flying.  I managed some 2:40s, but simply couldn't catch him.  We finished up with some 50 yd sprints in the :32 range - I could keep up there.  Turns out he swam for UA and was a nationally ranked IMer.  I think I may have talked hm into swimming Pensacola. Cool  He's not in my AG, so its all good!  On the bad (or good, depending on how you look at it) side I think my arms are going to detach from my shoulders.  He pushed me into one hell of a hard workout.

Also, welcome Lora!

Can I still join?

NAME: Jon (Most people call me Wheats)

Story:  Got hooked 2 years ago when I guy from work talked me into signing up 2 weeks before a sprint.  I finished.  I loved it but my inconsistent training and job (work a swing shift)  has been hard for me to get into good shape.

Family Status: Married with 2 boys (6yrs and 3yrs).

Current Training:  Looking to start and be consistent with all 2 disciplines.  Not sure on a hours a week, so need some help there.

This year's races:  Looking at doing a couple of Sprints and maybe and Oly.  Some 5k's and would liek to do a 10K or half marathon in the fall.

Weightloss:  Have lost 30lbs since Jan1 and would like to loose 20 lbs more and get i the 220's.  Sitting at 240 lbs now.

Had a pretty good idea I could do well in this race. My swim has definitely improved. I was as shocked as you to see my swim time. When i came out of the water I sort of felt like I didn't push as hard as I could. T1 sucked, and I'm not sure why. I had a solid transition game plan, but just fumbled everything. Need to learn to mount with my shoes already clipped in. Mark, I'm holding you responsible for teaching me that! Wink  Could not get confortable on the bike for the first 10 or 15 minutes. My heart rate was out of control, hurt to breath, throat hurt cause it was a little cold. But finally settled in, and hammered the second half of the bike. T2 sucked as well. I wear socks. That causes problems. At mile 1 of the run I looked at my watch and realized I had just ran a mile in 6:50. Was stoked! Tried to maintain that pace, but the course got hilly. Set my sights on a chic in front of me and ran hard trying to catch her. Man that girl was fast. I never did catch her. I gotta start interval training on the run. My LT threshold is at about 7:20. I do most of my runs around 9:00 minute pace. Train slow, race slow. I'm really looking for intensity over the next 2 weeks til my next race.

Let's give this a try.

NAME: Trent

Story:  I will be running my first Tri in August. I currently run anywhere from 25-40 miles per week (marine corps) and my best friend runs tri's so I figured I would get into it too. I bought a used Trek Hilo 2000 two weeks and absolutely love it.

Family Status: Single

Current Training:  Looking to start and be consistent with all 2 disciplines.  Not sure on a hours a week, so need some help there.

This year's races:  I'll be doing the Cherry Point Triathlon in August and might fit in a few sprints before and after that.

Hope you'll have me!

Edit- I just wanted to add that the thing I will need the most help with is nutrition. I honestly know nothing about it. Thanks!

Yay, another chick!

NAME: runnerjen/Jennifer
AGE: 28

Story:  I was never an athlete.  For some reason, I made it a goal to run in at least a 5k in 2010.  When I started on the treadmill, it was tough the first 2 weeks and got very easy very suddenly.  I realized I was going to hit 5k in under 6 weeks of training so I started looking for a new challenge.  I don't like running enough to complete a full marathon and for some reason the idea of a triathlon really appeals to me.

Family Status: Divorced mom with a 4-year-old

Current Training:  Mostly running and strength training since January.  I've done P90X for strength training.  Did I mention I can't really swim?  That's going to be a major focus starting tomorrow.

This year's races:  I did Iron Girl (Clearwater, FL) 5k last weekend and I'm hooked on racing.  I have planned: US Secret Service 5k May 22, and the Pier 60 series in Clearwater over the summer.  My first tri is going to be the Siesta Key Triathlon October 3, 2010 which is a sprint tri.

Goals: Have fun and do something I have never done before!

I will also need a lot of help with nutrition.  I am 5'6" and 105lbs.  Yes, I eat.  A lot (just ask my dates, I usually eat more than them!).  Blame genetics.  I have always had a difficult time gaining weight and I'm lactose intolerant so a lot of dairy based high cal foods are out.

Mark, I would love to join your group. Looks like there are many great people in your group.

Background:
I have always been pretty athletic and a decent runner. Picked up swimming vesus running to beat the Texas heat. Got into Triathlons when some friends and I challenged each other to race a sprint tri in Aug 2009. Needless to say I was hooked. It has been a great way to stay and shape and have fun.

Family Status - married. 2 kids - 3 and 6. Wife competed in her first tri this month.

Current Training - I have tried to stick with the 8 week Balanced Lifestyle BT plan twice, but my lifestyle is never balanced so sticking to the plan has always been difficult. Most of the time I stick with exercising when I can. I shoot for doing one of the abilities everyday while having some short and long term goals in mind.

Races: I have completed 2 Duathlons this year already and plan on doing the Alamo Tri series. It is a 6 race series with 5 sprints and an olympic distance in October.

Weight: 160. I wouldn't mind being 155 or even 150, but it is all about diet and mine is always hit or miss.

Short term goals: stay injury free, improve my biking to 18 MPH and finish middle to top of my age group in my races.

Long term goals: Get faster in all 3 sports and strongly complete my first Olympic distance race.

Last, don't suck the fun out of it and alway have a smile when I cross the finish line.Laughing

I'd like to say welcome to our new members: Loar, Jon, Trent, Robert, Dave, Jennifer and Zane.

Brian, Drew, Todd and Jacques, lets have some fun during round two!

I have only one thing to ask of the new members, and that is to use the training logs.  First, it makes the group have a better sense of "community".   Second, its hard to offer training advice when your logs are empty.

I will be sure to use the log.  This past week was tough.  After a weeks vacation to Disney World (dropped 10lbs) I went back to work on nights.  Nights are very tough for me because I have a really hard time sleeping during the day, so I do what I can.  After 2 weeks of nights I go back to 2 weeks of days and this is a much better time for me.  A lot easier to workout before work.  This is were I need to work on consistnecy.

Hey Jen, swimming will come easy.  I could not swim with my face in the water until about a year ago and now I know nothing else.

A little light on the running because the 10k I did on Sunday took the place of my long run and I skipped my Friday run just to give my legs a big of a rest.  The 10K was really a "C" priority race for me but I'm really stoked with how it went.   My report is here if anyone is interested.

I'm also pretty stoked about this group.  Looks like we've got a good group of people!
