My plan is simply to do my long rides and long runs during the warmest parts of the day during April and May. Temperatures will gradually rise and I'll gradually get accustomed. I'm in Houston, but based on the 70.3 in April this year, I wasn't even close to ready for the heat. I'm just not one of those people who like running in the heat. I though spending an hour or two a week in a hot room would help me (mentally and physically ). This year I purposedely ran at lunchtime in Dallas every noon for two months (still ongoing ) and even though I've acclimated, the pace is significantly slower (at least 40"/mile race pace ) than that of the late fall/winter months. The plan for the race is not going to be ambitious during the marathon, just an easy 6 mile jog after T2 and then maintain a humble pace until the end of the race fighting off the demons. Definetely not a PR race, it's gonna be about who slows down the least... About the Memorial Hermann 70.3 this year, I didn't do it but several people I know had a horrible race from the heat and wind. Conversely to what you stated, they were not ready to take on the heat. |
