ceilidh - 2011-01-12 7:44 AM I's odd, but just around here, there is no place to sled. We have woods or flat.

Does your lake freeze enough for ice skating?

Morning Kendra!

No, the lake freezes, but not solid enough for skating. Occasionally parts by the river here get solid enough to walk on but not reliably.... and not for me.

givemashot - 2011-01-11 12:06 PM Ok Gouhlies, I need some motherly advice.

I busted my 14 year old in a lie yesterday. She goes to a magnet school about 6 miles from our house. They supply a bus that takes the kids to/from a drop-off point, which just so happens to be my son's school. My daughter will occasionally call and say that she has to stay after school for a test retake, or make up a missed quiz, or have a short dance rehearsal. It bothers me when she calls as the bus is leaving the school, and when it's a rehearsal or something that she should have known about in advance. And I know she's not as innocent as she would have me believe. So, yesterday, she calls, "I have dance rehearsal, pick me up at 4:30. No, wait, 4:15". Easy enough, right? Hmm. Except I got there at 4:00, and found her walking towards the school, about a block away. Busted. She claimed that one of the dancers had to leave (or the high schooler who is doing the choreography), so they got out early. But she had enough time to walk a half mile with a friend. In 20 degree weather. Without a coat. Oh, and she didn't call me because she lost her phone (which she just got for Christmas), and apparently she knows no one else at the school, and is not able to walk into the office and use their phone . I emailed her dance teacher. They did not have rehearsal. They don't start their FIRST after school rehearsal for another 2 weeks. Now what do I do? My knee jerk reaction is to take away all interent connections at home (which she'll then just use the school library), and not give her phone back to her when/if we find it (the account is already frozen, just in case), insist on her riding the bus to and from school every day. Period. Unless she has a signed teacher's note saying what time she was with them after school. But I really want to trust her. I want her to feel trusted. And most of all, I want her to feel like she doesn't have to hide things from us.
What should I do?

DO NOT LET her get away with a lie. You have to make it plain that lying has penalties and one of them is that people will not trust you. Trust has to be earned. How she can do to earn trust is up to you but you need to make sure there are hard and fast rules about what is acceptable and lying is obviously not one of them with you. 14 year olds will push each and every line you draw with them. But they will remember that you did draw them.

Yeah, I agree with Robin. I know it sounds harsh, but I would do the things you mentioned. You gave her your trust the first time, now she has to earn it back. She won't like it, and she won't like you, but she doesn't have to. It's your to raise her to be the best person she can be and letting her get away with this isn't going to do it.

I'm with Robin and Anne.  Your daughter needs to learn that she can lose your trust and respect for her.  She needs to earn these back.  Don't make it impossible, but there need to be consequences or else she will not learn.  My daughter forged my signature on a note for school and she got busted.  She was grounded for two weeks.  That was the last time she forged my signature (and got caught).

I forged my dad's name when I was in H.S. all the time. His handwriting is sloppy, like mine.

I was such a goody two shoes.  When ever I did try something I seemed to get caught.  I watched my older sister get into so much trouble that I did not want to follow her footsteps.  that was more of a deterent than anything else for me.

I got away with a lot of stuff that I did do. I also got blamed for a lot of things that I didn't do. I flew by the seat of my pants, did the opposite of everyone else, and didn't back down to anyone. Those were the days.

You're not helping! Cry

Really though, my daughter's a good kid, she has just never thought very highly of telling us anything. Even questions like "how was your day" or "what did you do at recess"  have always been difficult to get answers to. I dont know why she thinks it's easier to lie to us than just tell the truth. I can't wait for the day she starts signing my name to things. Although, I know she has at least once.
*ack*

Amy, stand strong and firm.  The teenage years are the hardest to get through, but once they come out of them, you have some wonderfuly young adults that you can enjoy again.  I will say that, no matter how much problems my kids gave me and my hubby at home, they were always polite and nice to people outside of our house.  I was always proud of them, even when I was mad as blazes at them for whatever shenanigan they had just pulled.

In Massachusetts, we lived on a pond and it froze every winter for iceskating.  We just had to stay away from the dam area where the water was still pretty active.

We had places like that in Ohio. I loved it when the water froze clear so you could see fish and things below when you skated. That was rare.

I am liking the nook alot.  The main difference for me between the nook and the kindle is that the nook will accept files from more than just Barnes and Noble.  The kindle you are limited to what Amazon has to offer in addition to what is out in public domain.  Many libraries have downloadable ebooks that you can "borrow" from the library, but the kindle will not allow them to be used on it.  The nook will.

I really enjoyed traveling with the nook and not carrying 4-6 books with me for the 11 day trip.  Cut down on the baggage tremendously.  It holds the charge for several days, so out of the 11 day trip, I only had to recharge completely once.  I recharged again right before the plane trip, just to be sure that I would be good if we got stuck somewhere.

Hope that this helps.

First off you need to check to see if your library offers downloadable materials.  If you go to my library website www.gwinnettpl.org you will see a tab near the top labeled "Digital downloads"  Go and look there and we have some tutorials on how to download from us.  Of course you would need a library card from us to actually do the download, but you can see the tutorials without.  Our library systems uses Overdrive Media for our downloadables.  We purchase a certain number of copies in this format and they checkout just as a regular book would for a three week timeperiod.  Then there is a file on it which will cause it to expire on your device and not be readable any longer.

Barnes and Noble also has quite a lot of free books, and they have a free book that they offer for downloading every friday.  These you get to keep forever.  The ones you can buy from B&N are comparable in cost to what Amazon offers.  So I really don't see any advantage to going with Amazon vs B&N, except that the Kindle is 139 to the Nooks 159 in price.

So I wouldn't get a library fine??!?!?!?!
I am a library book abuser.
I need a 12 step program. I have NEVER returned a book on time. That is why I just buy books, it is cheaper and less humiliating in the long run.  I believe our library does this. I will check.

Oh... can you get newspapers and magazines?

No, you will never get a library fine, because it automatically returns after the time period.  So it is great for people like you.  Of course after the lending period you won't be able to continue to read it so you will know that it is gone.

Yes, you can get newspapers and magazines.  Not through the library, but subscribing for them through B&N for the Nook, or Amazon for the Kindle.

Both the Kindle and Nook have wifi, so anywhere you can get a sifi connection, you can download materials directly from Amazon or B&N.  You will need to go through a computer for anything you are downloading from your library.

You would think so but for some strange reason they wait for all the snow to fall before they start plowing.

You would think that they would watch the weather channel like we do and find out it is going to snow and they would start plowing but it just doesn't work that way!

I guess they figure "why plow now, when it is just going to need it again in a few hours.  Let's wait until the snow has stopped, then plow."

This morning's drive was a bit of a cluster...man...

bus collided parallel with a semi...ya...Figure the city will get in trouble for that one because of the snow that is still on the side of the road and cutting off about 1/3 of the far lanes...

people switching lanes without signalling

people running lights...

ah!

Kendra, we skate on frozen ponds around here. The family has been out 3 times already this winter. We have had bonfires on the ponds while skating at night before, that's always a big hit. One year the one pond we kept skating on had a snapping turtle frozen in the ice. That guy tripped up a lot of people that year.

My one SIL has a wall in her basement hanging full of ice skates. She gets them from other people when she can, and if anyone wants to go skating they go try on skates until they find a pair that fits. My husband and I have our own, but the wall is great for the kids! I even check ebay every now and then looking for cheap used skates to add to the collection. We've picked them up at yard sales, too.

That's it.. I am on my way for a visit. I want to ice skate (I am really bad, though), hot chocolate by the bonfire, to visit friends on horseback (I am really bad at that though, too) and to sled. I will bring Ibuprofen for the bruises I will get and Bailey's for the the hot chocolate.

wgraves7582 - 2011-01-12 8:49 AM Morning Ghoulies - Nekkid we got 6-8" of fresh snow and I went to work - you should to!

Snowmobile trails should be ideal tomorrow morning!!

Morning Bill, Bet you have better snow clearing machinery in your area.

Yeppers - but they miss out on all the OT!

So you know I live in Buffalo.  It snows in Buffalo.  My DD has a dentist appointment and my wife calls and says she is cancelling the appointment.  I asked why.  She tells me that her parents are saying that there is a driving ban in effect for the city of Buffalo.  I go really, then why is everyone at work today in the city of Buffalo?

As a side note - we have a 4x4 Tahoe that will go through anything that she drives - while I drive a Toyota Camry all the time in the snow and never have a problem.

Some people just need to live in Hawaii (I would have said down south but since you all got snow that is not even safe!)

Or just go for the winter. I would be up for that. and visit snow for a vacation. Ya!
