Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm doing OK. We're looking at a lot more trips to my mother-in-law's for the foreseeable future. Lots of cleaning out to do... I don't dare sign up for any more races right now because I never know when we're going to be home or when we'll be down there. I've looked for races in both places, but I'm pretty sure what will happen is that I'll be here when I want to be there and vice versa! Now - I looked at the Beginner's HIM plan and I notice that it is 20 weeks. If I were to do 20 weeks, I should have started this week!! I was kind of thinking I'd try to jump in next week. However, looking at the plan, it seems to have WAY too much swimming and not nearly enough running. I'm going to guess not enough biking either, but I don't know enough about biking to say for sure. I was thinking I'd drop to one swim/week and run as much as I could squeeze in. For now, I'll probably keep to what it says for the bike. Any advice from those of you who have done this plan before? |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Erincsg - 2012-02-28 7:38 AM kpringle - 2012-02-27 6:34 PM Hi Friends! I'm feeling pretty ready for the Quincy 1/2. (Although I'm sure I'll be a nervous wreck the morning of.) I got my 8 miler in this past weekend. I still have a 9 mile and 10 mile run to do based on my Hal Higdon's training schedule. It always has me nervous that the longest run on the schedule is a 10 miler since we're expected to run 13.1 on race day! It served me well during my last HM, so hopefully I'll have good luck again this time. Can't believe how quickly race day is approaching! I heard that there are showers available after the Quincy 1/2, as well as hot soup served to the runners post-race. How awesome is that??! Hey y'all; i'm looking forward to the Quincy Half & soup too! It will be fun to see you again. Can't believe I forgot to get a photo of us in Foxboro! Kristen & mav & I are doing the Half; how many are in the 5K besides Kim? I think we are all back to normal eating around here this week and I'm trying to be faithful to my training plan. But, SNOW ?!?!?! Last week I only got in one Spin class between the two GI crises. BTW - Kim, I did put your TI book in the mail yesterday My new/used bike has the original tires, and I've had it on the trainer this winter, so I ordered new tires for the season (Mommy' birthday present). After reading a bunch of BT threads, I got "Gatorskins" because I do NOT want to deal with a flat in a race. Anyone have experience with these?
Soup?! DO the 5K Kids get Soup too? Either way if supplies run low before Mav's crew gets to them, Ill stash it away! ...however one stashes soup. Am I the only one? Erin, Thanks for sending the book out! That is really awesome My pool is closed this week, so thats a hinderance (cause I spend so much time there anyway) Hope everyone is having a Great week. |

I was thinking I'd drop to one swim/week and run as much as I could squeeze in. For now, I'll probably keep to what it says for the bike. Any advice from those of you who have done this plan before? I have used this plan. I agree that it is very heavy on the swim portion. I think it is wise to drop one of the swims and make it a run or a bike. My feeling about the HIM and IM distance races is that...its all about the bike. You dont necessarily need to be fast on the bike but you need to be comfortable. If you can get off the bike and feel good then you will have a decent run. That being said...ride....when you think you have done enough riding...ride some more. The other hurdle to these races is getting the nutrition nailed down. Practice what you will use each of your long workouts. You should have one bottle of fluid each hour on the bike and take about 250-300 cals/ hour for each hour you are racing. IMO salt intake is key...especially if you are a sweater!!!! In the summer this can really cause some issues. I take a salt stick tablet every hour in a long race. You can get these tablets at a tri store or order them at tri sports.com.I will also get up well before the start of the race and eat quite a few calories for breakfast. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask questions along the way. |

![]() | ![]() Erin, I like gatorskins very much, I also like michelin pro. Both are a good tires and last a good long time. They are not cheap...much better to order these online if you have the chance. |

![]() | ![]() Nancy, I have never done the AT but my son has done part of it and loved it. There are many people out there and a fair deal of support. As a Mom, I always worry about my son especially when he is in the woods alone. I do think the AT is so well traveled that there are lots of people out there. It will be an experience for sure!!!! Nancy are you doing the Quincy 5 K? Kim...ther is a chance I will be doing the 5K instead of the half. My knee is bothering me...if it doesnt improve over the next week I am going to back off a bit. I will let you know. Hope you all have a good day |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay mentor people, my life is falling apart. Alright, not really but good golly, life has been extra stressful lately. I just don't have time to train right now and I HATE it. I miss it something fierce. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Right now I am not signed up for Quincy. I might jump in if I can sign up close to the race date. Things at home (and work!) are kind of a mess right now. In addition to driving down to Georgia to drop off my daughter and her friend on the Appalachian Trail, now I might have to drive the car all the way to Florida and then fly back. My husband flew down there to be with his elderly mom who was suddenly taken ill about two weeks ago, and it looks like he might have to stay for the long haul. He's been renting a car, but he wants me to bring him his computer and some other clothes and stuff from home since he thinks he'll be down there a long time (he luckily is retired, works part time some from home). So I was thinking as long as I'm in Georgia, another day and a half drive wouldn't be awful. I have an old aunt I can stop in and see in Ormond Beach, and my mom lives near my mother-in-law so I can always see her, too. My mother-in-law is 93, and she has always been very healthy so having this setback is hard for her. She can barely walk and she is somebody who recently was walking two miles every day. So with all this going on right now I'll try to get in some runs and maybe a swim or two in a hotel pool along the way. Mav, that's cool your son has hiked some of trail. My daughter Sandy is very outdoors oriented and well prepared, but still I worry. If the weather is warm I'll feel way better.

![]() | ![]() ACK!!!! This white stuff falling from the sky has forced me to bring my bike inside. I hate riding the trainer...so boring. I really shouldnt complain as I have been able to ride outside all winter. Nancy good luck with your travels...sorry about your mother in law. Having elderly parents is always an adventure. Erica....{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}...try and run a bit...you know it will help!!!!! 17 more days til Quincy....Happy March 1rst!!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So happy the weekend is here. I've had a pretty busy week and also feel a cold (yet ANOTHER one!) coming on... I'm hoping to just relax and recharge this week with some training sprinkled in for good measure, too. I have a 9 miler on tap for Sunday. I'm super pumped b/c I just bought a new trainer tonight - the KK road machine. Bike Barn (in Whitman) had them marked down 15% and then I got an additional 15% off for my tri training team... double dipping allowed, so 30% off! sweet! My weekend project is to figure out how to set it up and get it working! It's going in our finished basement where we finally have a TV, so I'll have entertainment while on the trainer, yay! Hope everyone has a great weekend!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() my super pumped feeling after purchasing the trainer yesterday has now gone to super deflated. the trainer set up went fine until i attempted to swap my rear tire for an indoor tire to use with the trainer. i was literally wrestling with the wheel to get the tire on for almost 3 hours!! that's determination, huh? punctured a tube and broke 2 tire levers in the process! my hands are raw and my husband actually cut himself trying to get that mother f'er on!! i thought for sure we were doing something wrong, so i googled the tire and the reviews were horrible - everyone complaining how difficult it was to get on/off. so needless to say, i'm headed back to the LBS to return the indoor tire. can't wait to actually get on that trainer! maybe tomorrow??? tonight wasn't a TOTAL waste of time, however. i learned and practiced how to change a tire/flat!! |

![]() | ![]() Oh Kristen I feel your pain!!!! Those tires are a . This year I brought mine to landrys and paid to have the "bike guy" do it! I have another set of wheels that I can use outdoors, so I change the wheel when I ride outside. Its so much easier. If you have an older bike you can use the wheel from that one and put the trainer tire on it. Thurs and Fri are supposed to be close to 60....you can probably ride outside ![]() |

I'm just keeping the original tire on there for now. I'm going to look into purchasing a used tire/wheel for the trainer and swap them like you do, Mav, between trainer/outside rides. It's way easier for me to change my wheel than my tire, I've found! So I did finally get my first trainer ride in yesterday. LOVE the trainer and being able to get a good workout in the comfort of my own home!! I'm really hoping to see some improvement in my bike times this season!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Long mother 'effin day here. I had a midterm that went long but was easy (sign language, which I am really good at) but then a Neuropsych eval for Cole that was INTENSE. It was the initial meeting which involved a billion questions and ended in a headache for me. And I have a weird feeling about the doctor who is doing it. She left me with a weird feeling. Not sure how to describe it but uneasy is the closest I can come. I am for sure running tomorrow. I NEED to run. |

Have a great day guys! glad you got your run in, even if it was short! it DEFINITELY beats sitting on the couch! i'm still hoping i get a run in before bedtime tonight... tuesdays are generally our busiest day of the week in our house and i don't have time to run during the day. so i have to wait for my husband to get home from work which sometimes isn't until after 7pm. it's so hard for me to motivate for a run that late in the day! fingers crossed it actually happens... |

![]() | ![]() Yay Erica!!! Glad you got it done! Supposed to be beautiful the next few days!!! Time to get those bikes off the trainer and ride outside !!!!! Hows everyone doing??? I know that Erin is plagued by a lousy cold! I have since come down with this cold. My family has had it for about 10 days!!!! I have decided that I am not going to get it as bad as they did. Hope you are all getting some training in....OWS season is just around the corner...for those who have not been swimming...time to get in the pool!!!

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Erica and Mav, hope you both feel better soon!! I'm feeling ok health-wise, but starting to get nervous about the upcoming Quincy Half. I've been putting in the time/miles for training, but my last long run was a complete struggle for me. I hope it was just a "bad" long run and that my long run this coming weekend goes better. I want to go into race day feeling more confident!! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Guys! Remember me? I am Kim I ran a 5k with y'al that one time? Started out last week well, pool was closed but got some training in. My Brother and his family were up this weekend but it wasnt untill tonight I found myself doing anything. Nutrition: FAIL Water: okay. My little training distraction Zoe is doing a water challenge of her own, trying to drink it out of a sippy. She seems to prefer us to do all the work when it comes to liquid consumption. I hope to get 3 miles outside tomorrow and a swim before the weekend. If I can pull that much out, il be happy for now. Time to get organised, DC will be here before I know it.
Erin, The book arrived last week. Thank You so much! I really appreciate it. Hope everyone is Healthy and Moving, Kim |
