New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey g-pigs, After a week of resting it (apart from walking the pups and a game of softball where I played catcher and had a courtesy runner) my knee seems to be healed. I played soccer last night and things felt fine! Today I woke up and there is no pain in the knee - other things are a bit stiff, but that would be the result of the hiatus. Today I'm planning to try a VERY short run (20 minutes or less) at lunch and a bike ride to visit the foxes this evening. Hope everyone's training is going well! Heather |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, gang! I taught my last spinning class this morning before the summer break. It was a great class. I am ready for the break - time to dream up some new playlists and profiles. My class is a real mix of athlete types. I have one lady - mid 50's - who joined after as part of a weight loss program. She had never done any organized sports or serious working out, but she joined the class and stuck with it every week. She did tell me she was scared as heck the first month. I was so proud of her. Today she gave me the nicest thank you note telling me that my class opened a new door for her and her life would be forever changed. Wow, was I humbled. It reminded me that regardless of how intimidated any of us may be by the next competitor, we all have a door to our next level of intensity. We just need the courage to open it. In my case, I may need to kick at the door stop a little! ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went for a long run yesterday evening, 8.5 miles@9:05 pace. Felt 'pretty' good, but legs are still a bit tured-no pop in them. I've kida strayed from my training plan the last week or so, but I'll get back on it. It's time to start hitting the local ponds for some OWS. Race Schedule change: I'm gonna pass on the MagicMan on the 16th and do the Race for the Capital Oly tri on the 30th. I don't have the $$$ right now to travel out of town for a race. Enjoy the weekend-Train Safe, Have FUN! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have my Half Marathon this weekend. I was going to do a short 30' run this morning with a small dose of speedwork at the end but my wife got me to rethink based on how my lower left leg has been (basically she put her foot down, reminded me that I was being stupid, etc.). Leg definitely hasn't been getting better - I have a Dr's appt with a really good sports medicine doc on Tuesday (head doctor for US Winter Olympic team). But my race is Sunday so I'm taking today and Saturday off from any leg related training. Leg not bothering me as much today. Going to try to get a swim in tomorrow morning. My goal for the race is to see how close to 1 hour 40 minutes I can get. Last year I blew up terribly on this run but admittedly didn't have the correct fitness level going into the race for the pace I went out the gate at. We'll see how my leg holds up and how I do on Sunday. Wish me luck!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch - ya know, if the wife calls you off training, you can always remind her that leg massage can improve the situation! I use that excuse whenever possible. I hit the pool last night and had my best swimming distance workout - I just kept swimming at a relaxed pace to see how long and far I could go. I finally looked up and realized I was the only one left in the pool and the guard was tapping her foot at me! My shoulders are a little stiff today, so it must have been okay on distance. I ran a short 5K this morning at race pace. I have a longer bike ride planned after work. I am kinda winging my training plan these days depending on what time I have available. My general schedule is 2X swimming, 3X biking and 3X running per week with distances depending on time available. I have yoga stretching 2x per week. Lately, I have completely stopped specific weight strength work because of time - besides it is my least favorite..... Not very scientific plan. |

Today she gave me the nicest thank you note telling me that my class opened a new door for her and her life would be forever changed. That was so nice of her! Just goes to show that any time you appreciate someone, you should tell them - I bet that her note just made your whole week better. I have had a great couple of bike rides this week. I've been focussing on spinning easy on the bike, to avoid re-aggravating my knee, and it seems to be working. I also tried a short run (24 minutes) today and got through it with no pain or stiffness! Tomorrow I'm going to try a longer run and see how it goes. Today's bike ride was fabulous. I could have sworn I was going faster than normal (I wasn't) because I felt like I was flying most of the ride (could just have been the counter-effects of my week off. I don't do total rest very well!). To top it off, I had a porcupine sighting (which always makes my day). He ambled out of the woods and was sauntering up the road, then he heard me looked me over and took off into the bush before I could get my phone out of my pocket for a picture). There was a lady about 500m ahead of me walking a dog, and all I could think was how good it was for all concerned that the porcupine hadn't shown up about 5 minutes earlier! I have some pictures of the baby foxes from my ride on Thursday that I will try to upload tomorrow. Hope you are all having a fabulous and fun weekend! ~Heather |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey gang - Half Marathon went okay. My goal time was 1:40:00 and I came in at 1:44:43. I think I forgot how challenging this course was. It lulls you to sleep the first 2 miles with a gentle downhill and then throws rolling hills at you with two steep hills (mile 7.5 and mile 12.5). I was about 1 minute 15 seconds ahead of my pace plan at mile 7.5 and I think I lost most of that when I decided to walk up that hill based on where HR was. After that my hamstrings and hip flexors starting tightening up and I ran and intermittently walked throughout the rest of the race. It was definitely the hottest weather I've run in since last summer - lot's of sunshine. A very beautiful day though. Last year was the first time I ran this race and admittedly ran a really stupid race - that being said - last year's time was 2:00:50 (approx) - so while I didn't hit my goal time or set a PR - I am happy with the big improvement over last year. I'll link to my race report once official times, etc. are posted. I go to the DR's tomorrow for my ankle. It is very unhappy with me today and walking is not fun. I dread the diagnosis - hoping I don't have to take too much time off. I have a Sprint I would like to do in two weeks but really need to listen to the Doc. If he says no running I'm trying to decide between seeing if the race organizer will give me a credit for a later race or just do the Swim and Bike to see where I am? Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi GPs! Long time no see! @dangremond - fingers crossed that your ankle is nothing serious! sending good wishes your way @janette - must have been so rewarding to get a note like that from one of your students! Sorry my bout of absence - I had actually strained my ankle last monday and have just been really upset with my body as of late. Still dealing with the knee thing and the ankle was just and added issue. Anyhow, the ankle is feeling much better but the knee still isn't so happy. I had my 2km open water swim race yesterday and it went pretty well. The water was about 64 degrees so a bit chilly and I swam it in 41 mins. I think I could've gone faster since I wasn't that tired afterwards but I didn't know how to pace myself at that distance. There were a lot of fast swimmers there with a 13 year old doing the 2km in 29 mins! crazy! Overall, it was great OWS experience since I did get whacked in the head a couple of times and get squeezed between a couple swimmers. I hope everyone had a great weekend!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey G pigs, Congrats to all who raced this weekend; sounds like ya all did real well. Good ride on saturday with my club. Almost 60 rolling miles with a 17.2 average. But felt fine and legs held up realy well til about mile 55-then they stopped feeling good and began to feel rather bad. Other than that....nothing but relaxing and yard work. I'll get back on my 'program' today, so a tempo trail run is the plan. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch - great race. That is an incredible improvement in time over last year. Congratulations! Jeff - 60 miles with a group - that must be fun and take out some of the monotony of a long ride. Except for the spit protocol in a group, riding in a pack makes everything easier. Friday, I did a 20 mile bike ride after work and then did a mini-transition into my running shoes and ran for 40 minutes. It was my second workout for the day after an early morning run and I really was chugging slow on the last few blocks. My calves felt a little crampy right after getting off the bike, but they loosened up after awhile. I was wiped out Friday night. I ran for an hour early afternoon on Saturday in 95 degree heat. I didn't realize it was that hot until I got back home. My first really hot workout this year. I showered and then sat in the shade watching a baseball game sipping my water. I took Sunday off to recuperate a little energy. This morning I set out on a beautiful cool morning bike ride. I got 10 miles and stopped for water, but then my bike cleat broke out of my shoe wedged into my peddle. No tip-over, thankfully, but I didn't have the right tools to get fixed so I limped home with my shoe tied to the peddle with a headband! It worked, but not very efficient pedaling. I had my phone with me, but I am saving the "Rescue Me" button for a real crisis call to the husband who often quips, "You are always fixing on that expensive bike!" |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CURSE YOU FIBRAM 5 FINGERS....Although I love my toe shoes, the major downside for me is the lack of protection from stone/bone bruises. Marble sized-to quarter sized stones are brutal on the balls of my feet. Well, I stomped the CRAP out of one about a mile into my run. I tried to shake it off, but I've had a bad history of bone bruises on my feet and didnt want a repeat so I hobbled home. Group ride tonight. @Janette-It's good that you're practicing transitions. This time year, almost all of my rides end with transition practice; either getting on the bike fast or getting off fast-and a short run afterwards. Your legs are ALWAYS gonna feel a bit crappy, but if you KNOW that feeling is normal then you won't let it freak you out during a race. And THAT is valuable knowledge. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all. Here's a quick catch-up on my training since I've been quiet for the past few days. Had a decently relaxed weekend. I ran 8 miles on my treadmill on Saturday night. (Have I mentioned before that treadmill running is boring?) I had planned to bike on Sunday, but family obligations had priority, so I took the day off. Last night, I biked 30 miles on my indoor bike. Overall, I'm feeling pretty tired these days...but am doing my training the best that I can. Work is starting to intensify (and I'll be on the road next week), family obligations are increasing and racing season is a mere three weeks away. AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Oh well, tri training/racing has always been a balancing act, so I'm doing my best (and I have to say, strong coffee is helping). I had planned to do a HIM as my first race of the season in mid-July, but am thinking about squeezing in an Oly race in late June to test my fitness. I haven't registered for the Oly yet, but am seriously thinking about it. I've done the Oly race for the past two years, so I know the course well. It'll be a game time decision. Other than that, things are well. Hoping to get to the pool tonight for 3000. BTW, the weather here in NY is just weird. It was hot and humid last week, then rained a lot for a few days, and now the highs are only in the low-mid 60s. Hope everyone is well. Brian |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Brian - you have dedication and discipline to hit the basement gym for treadmill and indoor cycle training - both are boring. Jeff - I have often wondered how those minimalist shoes are with rocks (or glass?) A bone bruise - that sounds ouchy! I ran 6 miles this morning. I spent the first mile telling myself just to keep at it and it would get more enjoyable. The run was nothing spectacular, I just loped along without a whole lot of intention. Maybe some minimalist shoes and pokes to the soles of my feet would keep me more focused - Nah!! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Wednesday all. Hope everyone is doing/feeling well today. I swam 3000 last night. I think that's the longest I've ever gone, and I felt pretty good at the end. My form still isn't perfect and my 100 time is still only ok, but I'm happy with how my swimming is progressing. I know I could work on technique and get a bit faster...but I think I get a bigger bang for the buck at this point in the season focusing on the bike and run. So, I'll probably do some intervals tonight and a long run tomorrow, or at least that's the plan.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, all! I did my second OWS last night. It was a beautiful evening and had the family on shore with a picnic waiting for me. The water wasn't as cold as my first time so I was more comfortable first getting in. I wore my wetsuit again and even put it on the right way this time. I think it might have been a little off in fit because the shoulders felt a little restricted this time compared to last time. So, I get started and wham, I can't get my breathing right. I slow down and tell myself to breath easy, relax my pace, concentrate on stroke counting - I am still hyperventilating. I was so frustrated with myself. I swam back and forth between shallow and deep water along the shore and never really evened out. I stopped and stood several times to catch my breath. I finally got out of the water breathing like I had been sprinting for miles. I am going out again tonight. I am not going to beat myself up, but I am concerned about getting my head straight and not panicking. I ran a nice long run this morning with varying pace. The land seems so much more controllable than the water .... |
![]() ![]() |
Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Janette - good luck with the wetsuit. When is your first race this summer? How well do you swim without it? I know Triathlon 101 says you must have wetsuit, but if it's causing issues for you, then perhaps swim without it. I'm still a newbie (only 3 tri races completed to date) and I'm sure Coach Jenny (and other tri coaches) would say the opposite, but if you're struggling with your wetsuit and consequently not getting quality swim training done ahead of this summer's races, then maybe the wetsuit isn't for you for this upcoming tri racing season. Perhaps spend your time now focusing on the races ahead of you, and worry about the wetsuit during the off season. In the three races that I've done so far, there are a number of folks without wetsuits (including me) and we seem to do just fine. I know I'm potentially losing time on the swim leg as a result, but I'm not looking to podium. In my two races last year, I passed folks using wetsuits, so even though Tri 101 says use a wetsuit, there are folks who can't swim in them anyway. And in terms of energy, yes, I probably burn more energy on the swim leg than somebody with a wetsuit, but again, I'm not looking to podium. I pace myself based on my training and if that means I'm starting the bike leg with a slight 'deficit' compared to the average person who swims with a wetsuit, then so be it. I do tri races for fun and to stay in shape, so a little lost time here and there really doesn't bother me. I 'race' against myself and hope to always do better than my previous race, so that's how I measure myself. Just my two cents on a Friday morning... |
|
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Brian - great two cents. Thanks. I am going to try a training session in OWS without the wetsuit and see how that feels. I do like the secure feeling of the compression and mentally imagining that no creepy fish can touch me, but I am not such a scaredy-cat if it means better breathing. My first race is a sprint on July 22. I just want to get out of the water within the time limit, which I am pretty sure I can do with a breast or side stroke. But... that picture doesn't sit well with my pride. I know, screw pride in a triathlon, right. I did a nice 22 mile bike ride this morning at about an 18 mph pace. All feels good there - except for the huge chunk of wood I ran over not paying attention. One thing about the carbon frame of a road bike - you feel that bump clear up in your teeth! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey All, Been AWOL on the training this week. Bruise on foot was a bit worse than I first suspected so I'm taking a break from running. Goggles got lost so I couldn't swim til payday. Weather has been crap so I haven't been able to ride. IOW-I've been a lazy piece of dung. However, in my defense, I've been helping the GF move and have put alot of hours into volunteering for the Boise Ironman 70.3 which is Sat. Enjoy your weekend. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Spent a good portion of the week at Dr's appts. Met with my sports med doc today to go over the results from a bone scan he ordered to see if there was a stress fracture. Radiology confirmed I have not 1 but 3 stress fractures. All are Grade 1 with only 1 being Symptomatic. I go back to the Doctor in 6 weeks for another exam. Until then no impact activities beyond walking. I don't have to wear a boot or cast and as long as there is no pain I can cycle and swim. Pretty depressing. I'm trying to look at it positively though - great chance to focus on and improve my swim. Have to reevaluate my diet and look at what sources of Vitamin D and Calcium I am getting. Initial thoughts are that I'm not getting enough. Also, when I start running again it will have to be in baby steps - short distances at easy paces. Looking at it as an opportunity to build a nice base through the fall in all three disciplines and then jump back in next spring. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @Mitch - ouch. get better soon. perhaps an aquabike race? @Jeff - ouch x2. bruised foot...yikes. get better soon too. aquabike? And isn't Bill and our two Canadian GPers also nursing injuries. This group needs some serious R&R. Hope everyone gets better soon! As for me...ran 10 miles yesterday (Thursday). Felt pretty good...probably could have gone a few miles more at the same pace, but I had to get to work. I took a shot block square and a gatorade/water mix at mile 6ish, and that was helpful (obviously). I had hoped to get some training done today, but that didn't pan out. My daughter had her kindergarten graduation today and with family in town for that...training wasn't possible...so today was a rest day with alot of pictures and cake. BTW, the graduation was so cute. All the kids wore caps and gowns, and sang songs and things. It was perhaps overkill for a bunch of 5-6 yo kids, but for us parents it was great. Alot of kodak moments. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Brian

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, guinea pigs, injuries are a bummer all the way around. Being down when you really want to be moving sucks. One other discipline you guys might consider is pilates. You discover muscles that you never knew you had. I ran 5 miles on Saturday, but am taking an unanticipated off day today. I am traveling for work this evening and tomorrow and will miss out on training time. Tuesday will be back at it. Good luck with the healing, folks. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LarchmontTri - 2012-06-08 10:28 PM And isn't Bill .... also nursing injuries. This group needs some serious R&R. Hope everyone gets better soon! Actually, I'm doing pretty good now. I ran 30 miles last week, which is as many as I ran the whole month of May. That was my lowest monthly running total in 5 years, due to vacation and healing road rash. The road rash is about gone and I ran 9.7 miles on Saturday. Due to the low May mileage I'm treating the next month or so as Base Building time. Just running; pace is irrelevant. I rode the Bike a couple of times - just cruising - to get my biking legs back under me. I'll start back swimming this week (tough to swim with Road Rash!). Coach Jenny seems to be AWOL. I can't handle any Bike or Swim advice, but if anyone needs any Running advice or training ideas, let me know. I'd be happy to try to help if I can. Bill Edited by breger1 2012-06-11 7:58 AM |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @Bill - glad to hear you're feeling better. 30 miles...that's a great week. congrats. As for me, my weekend training was decent. Saturday was an interval session on my treadmill. It was ok. I didn't feel great, but I pushed through. And as an aside, I think these interval session are really helping me. When I go out for long runs, I'm feeling really good/relaxed/strong...and although I can't say for sure, but I think the hard interval sessions are a big factor. Not sure what everybody else does for interval sessions, but mine seem to be working for me. I went out for a 35 mile bike ride on Sunday morning. It was a great ride. My legs felt pretty good and I was surprised how strong they felt going uphill. The only small downside was an "almost encounter" with a truck at an intersection...couldn't clip out fast enough and down I went onto the sidewalk. I knew it was going to happen at some point, but no big deal. No damage, no blood, no road rash, no scratches....just me and the sidewalk. I got right up and clipped back in and kept going. Very minor incident in the grand scheme of things. Hoping to get to the pool tonite, but we'll see. First race in less than 2 weeks....it should be a good test. Happy Monday to all! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey GPs, Hope everyone had a nice/safe/injury free/injury HEALING weekend. Boise 70.3 was this weekend. My apologies for anyone who attended. The weather was just HORRIBLE. 40 degrees and sleeting/blowing at swim start, which was delayed while they decided to cut 45 miles from the bike leg. I've helped out every year and don't think we've ever had decent weather; cold, wind, rain, are normal. Got a little swim in Friday and again Sunday morning. @Brian-Kindergarten grad IS a big deal. It's the renting of tuxes and limos that pushes it over the top. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey GPs! Apologies for the absence and so sorry to hear about the injuries that have been going on. @Mitch : Wishing you a speedy recovery with your fractures. I can definitely relate to the discouragement that's felt. @Brian : congrats on the graduation!! i'm sure it was absolutely adorable As of right now, I think I'm going to nix the idea of racing this summer. My knee still isn't feeling great and I know that racing is going to place unnecessary pressure on myself and I just can't risk pushing too hard and facing another round of this recovery/healing process. Hopefully I can start doing some base building again come July and maybe look into doing some running races in the fall and maybe some additional open water swimming races. Anyhow, I hope everyone else's training is going well. Definitely inspiring to see how hard some of you all are training! Keep up the good work! |
