I got the results of the x-rays back on the knee and it shows nothing. The Dr. doesn't have an explanation other than overuse, said we could do an MRI, but not sure if the insurance will allow it. So the plan for now is just go run and bike and see what happens I guess. I have rested it for most of the month of May and it is no better or no worse, so I will just ice it and brace it and work through it. May be just getting old Anyway, I'm in for the June challenge, but I'm gonna try for 35 workouts, should be able to get it done now that I can add in swimming. Also decided to make logging food a priority in June. I fell off track, but I'm going to get back and get er done so I am ready for my race in September! Let's kick some a$$ on that food logging! Now you will have David and I checking your LoseIt everyday. For any of you that want to track stuff grab the LoseIt app and get to crackin |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open What a cool day I had. This morning we took our son to his tri practice run for next weeks race. Can you believe he is going to be a triathlete before I am now that we found a race sooner than Sept. He's so excited. Guess it was a nice day all around and just got in from a short easy ride to keep the knees moving and loosen up those stubborn tendons that won't get loose no matter what I do. I swear if I stretch anymore I'll turn green and become Gumby. They kinda feel tighter when I am easy spinning versus spinning with a hell of a load on them. |

Who's with me? What are you going to do this weekend to challenge yourself and what is your reward going to be? Can't match that! Already got my workout in for the day. Ran a little over 4 this morning. Upper 70's with 95% humidity. Can I get some kind of credit for that? Reward will be gumbo at a friends house tonight. Be safe out there! Bill But you did! By getting out there and getting it done - you challenged yourself and that's what it's all about Have some extra gumbo - you've earned it! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Originally posted by podemma The race is having a First timers clinic the day before and I plan on doing that. I feel that I am as physically prepared as I can be. Most of the nerves are coming from transition and pacing. So with that in mind here are the questions I have: 1: Transitions. I have watched lots of videos and read lots of articles on transitions but they still really worry me so any tips to help me prepare for doing them smoothly? 2: Pacing. I have no issue doing the race distances individually but I find when I do my bricks I start out running too fast. Any tips for pacing? I don't have a Garmin or a heart rate monitor so I'm kind of flying blind. Glad to hear that there is a first timers clinic. Remember that triathlons are big business, so don't worry about asking too many questions. They will do almost anything to get you to sign up for next year's race. Here are some thoughts Transitions - The best thing you can do is practice, practice practice. The more times you struggle to rip off that wetsuit while throwing your helmit on the more natural the transitions will become for you. Try to practice at the end of a work out when your are tired so you can replicate as closely as possible the way you will be feeling when you run into T1 and T2. Finally, time yourself and look for your own ways to make yourself faster. Pacing - That again comes with practice. I don't know what plan you are following - but you should be doing 1-2 bricks per week until the race so try finding ways to slow down as you leave T2. ALso, feel free to walk. Another idea is to sing a song to yourself. If you can't get out an entire line without taking a breath, then you are probably going too fast. I once read that you can't win the race coming out of transition, but you can lose it. Let me know if I can help in any other way |

Alex - Sounds like a good day was had by all. I'm so jealous of the fact that you have your son following in your footsteps. What a valuable lesson you are teaching him. As for the stretching - it will pay off. I was fitted for my bike in May of '12 and my hips were so tight that they had to make some serious adjustments. The stretching paid off 11 months later when the guy doing the fitting looked up after watching me on the video for about 5 seconds and mentioned - "you've been stretching, uh" and then went back to the video. That little comment made turning into gumby (dammit) totally worth it. |

Extreme Veteran 1648 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open Well I had a slacker start to the weekend. Some nasty daycare germs caught up with me and I went down hard. So no workout for me. Hopefully I'll be up for an easy bike tomorrow. As far as transitions go I try and break them down and keep them really simple. Between the water and transition I have four tasks- first I put my goggles on my forehead then I unzip my wetsuit and pull it off my arms and down to my waist, next remove cap and goggles and try and get feet as clean as possible while running - wipe on mats etc as running. Then I hit transition I pull my wetsuit off my butt and sit down to pull it off my legs and immediately put on my socks ( preballed so i can just roll them onto my wet feet) And bike shoes while sitting. (Hoping around trying to avoid sitting takes too long for me). Then number if needed, pull sunglasses out of helmet and on, helmet on, grab bike and start running. There really isn't that much that needs to be done, so know what it is, have a plan with your gear set up in order and just go. Second transition is way faster- rack bike sit down swap shoes add number change helmet for visor grab hand held bottle and out. I always see a ton of people futzing about in transition and don't really get it. It's the easiest place to move up. I would say when you are setting up your stuff really think about the order you will use it in and lay it out accordingly. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Open So, I went out for my ride yesterday as planned and didn't get far... We have speedbumps here on campus and I smacked into one while trying to catch up to my friend who I was biking with. Before I knew it - I was upside down in the air. My front tired knocked me off balance and the rear tire shot me up in the air. Luckily, I landed pretty softly considering how fast I was going) and the only blood came from a small cut on my finger. The only think that sucked was that I hit my back pretty good. Yet, I feel pretty lucky. Just as I was collecting my wits - my rear tire exploded (I thought it was a car back firing!). We managed to get a spare on there in less than 5 minutes. The ride was fantastic! We did 22 at a pace around 16 mph (that's 26 kph for those of you canadians), which is pretty fast for me. There were some major hills and he crushed me on those - but I always managed to catch up. To reward myself - I enjoyed a Two Hearted Ale and cheese burgers on the grill. Today I am hoping to get out for a run/walk depending on how sore I am. |

While I didn't exactly light up the course...I finished 83 out of around 110 or 115 people with a time of 2:23 at the Holliston, MA Sprint race (.5M swim, 15M bike, and 5M run). The weather was significantly hotter than it had been while I was training and it definitely took its toll on me. My swim time was better than I expected and my bike was spot on, but the 5 mile run kicked my ! :-( I was only able to maintain a 12 minute/mile pace (due to lots of walking). Great experience and super friendly people at the race. I'll post my splits later today or tomorrow. and fill out the race template. Now I need to ice up and drink a beer or two. Next up...Ashland, MA Sprint in two weeks. George |

Lucky fall - I take them on mountain bikes all the time, but that's at very low speeds, I'm afraid of what I might break if I hit one at road speeds. I was going to complain today about the humidity here (75 degrees at 5:30 this morning and my glasses wouldn't stop fogging up on my run), but then I read about your hills and think maybe I should appreciate Florida a little more - "major hill" = the occasional bridge, otherwise it's nice and flat anywhere you want to ride. And funny you mention a Two Hearted Ale, just tried one a couple weeks ago, very nice. I believe it was with a big fat burger too, now that I think about it. |

There is no pain at all it just feels really tight when I'm sitting or driving. I did a bunch of ice and it's not swollen anymore but now when I ice it gets even tighter. I know I was talking about this earlier but forgot to ask do I still use ice or now that there is no swelling switch to heat to loosen it up and get more blood flow to speed up recovery? It doesn't feel weird when I run only on the bike and not so much after 1 or 2 miles. Just not sure how long this takes and if heat will help. |
