Reading your post reminded me that I forgot to tell everyon I completed my first Tri this weekend. I've done the race report for anyone that wants to read it. For those who don't, here is a short run down.

Age group: 14/28
Overall: 156/468
Swim: 26/28, 377/468
Bike: 11/28, 140/468
Run: 10/28, 93/468

Needless to say, the swim killed me. I know what to expect next time though! I'm looking forward to it.

Benson

Great job, Benson. When I did my first Tri the swim killed me, too. I couldn't catch my breath and couldn't find my stroke. I think part of it was that I didn't get into the water and acclimate myself to the temperature beforehand. On my second Tri I knew what to expect, did a quick warm-up, and nailed the swim. Just think how much better you'll be next time. And I can't believe they had you guys running on the sidewalk!

Thanks for the advice on the Snickers Marathon Bars... I'll keep away from those!

Mindy

Well, I just registered for my first Tri of the season. It's on June 30th and in a suburb of Toronto (Brampton). So, I guess I should start doing some more swimming. Not sure what the water is like there so will be taking a drive out there one day (I have business meetings in Brampton fairly regularly) to scope out the lake and area.

Now I'm starting worry what I have gotten myself into.

Well I finally pulled the trigger and bought a new bike.  It's a GT -r Series 2.  Aluminum frame with carbon forks, all 105, except for the rear derailer which is Dura-Ace.  Dura-ace is sooo nice.  Good, clean reliable shifting.  I'll have to post a picture of 'us' later.  My former bike was a 10-yo Trek steel frame with shifters on the downtube.  Scarry business shifting at 25+ mph!

Time to ride, ride, ride.

Sounds like a great bike.

I just came back from doing my longest ride ever. 77K (according to by computer), along the two main highway arteries in Toronto. This ride was for the Heart and Stroke foundation and has about 20,000 riders doing either 25k, 50k or 75k. I felt great on the ride, took me right on 3 hours to complete, so a little slow compared some of the really bikers out there, but I am happy with the session.

Only one major accident where a club pace line wiped out and at least one of the riders was carted away on the ambulance. Hopefully they are ok. The pace line is pretty scarry if your not used to it, so I'm not sure I'll be doing that anytime soon.

Well, not the Triathlon world, but I hiked up to Camp Muir on Mt. Rainer on Saturday... 5000 feet of climbing. Roundtrip 9.3 Miles. Elevation:10200 feet. The one thing that got me was the snow/sun? The glare was brutal, and I was so sunburned. Blisters on my face. Knee held up pretty well. I think due to slushy snow. Not too bad 5 days before sugery!!

Very cool!

I plan to climb Mt. St. Helen's in August.  Although it is a non-technical climb (like Ranier), it is a rush to finally make it to the top and look out over 1,000's of sq-miles of mountains and valleys.

Good luck with the surgery.

Well 2 days into my recovery from surgery, and I am feeling good about the way things are going. I am able to walk without crutches, and have yet to take pain pills (I like to stay "regular" and pain pills screw that up big time!). I am now itching to get out and do things, but realize that would be dumb. Even small walks tend to ache, so no hurry here! Hope all is well you able bodied athletes. Race hard, Race smart, and HAVE FUN THIS WEEKEND!!!

Steve, glad to hear the surgery was a success. Hope you come through it stronger than before you had it.

I'm prepping to do the Brampton Sprint race, it will be my first Tri this year. This morning I did a 10.2K in Toronto, then drove up to Musselman lake and did my first OWS since last September. The water felt great (about 70) and was very calm. We did about 750M, based on the dragon boat bouys that we swam around. Then we did a short easy ride of 16k. Was a great day for it today and I am now pysched for the Brampton race. Even though I am not going to win anything, I am looking forward to getting out and having a great time.

Be encouraged, Steve. My brother-in-law had surgery on a lateral meniscus tear and raced St Anthony's with us 1 MONTH later in 3h 5m 1s!! Anything is possible!

I was in a wedding out in central Nebraska...plane was an hour late so i didn't make the rehearsal dinner, had a bad sinus infection (didn't get my run in), ushered everyone in like a pro, ushered everyone out like i didn't know what was going on (I didn't), did the college wedding reception thing (not in my triathlon best interests), flew back down here (plane was an hour and a half late this time) and took a test.

Today I had 5 hour break in classes so the guy doing the tri w/ me this weekend went out to ride the course...Well we weren't able to ride the part of the course w/in the resort limits so we rode around it. Due to some crazy roads, and the fact that a main highway just stops, we got lost, had to call someone to get directions and proceeded to do a 2 hour ride instead of a 45 minute ride and missed the rest of our classes...but its about 85 and sunny and I couldn't ask for a better weekend or tuesday!

Well I got 'her done yesterday. Not too speedy and slower than I wanted to be, but at least I finished and not quite last. A great event though. The field was very tough as it was the nationals and most of the competitors were experienced racers.

I have submitted a race report.
