Wow, just thought I'd check-in and see what's going on. Is everybody actually working? Noone's posted in an hour, that's gotta be some kind of record for this thread.

From all the swim talk, looks like I'm gonna be the last one in the pool. Oh wait, I don't have to get in the pool, not a goal. Though I guess if I want to do a tri next year, I should still learn how to swim I have to say, all the talk is getting me a little hyped.

Well, gotta join in the rat race at work.

It often seems that really active days on the nibbins threads are directly followed by slow days - hmmmmm, i wonder if there is any correlation????

Anyone feel like blogging BT gods on something worthwhile?

The one thing I don't like about blogging day+ old Inspires (like over the weekend) is that they get sent to the day posted not today's date, so most likely the blog gets missed. So you have to cut and past the blog into the current date, PITA when I have so much to do already!

On this thread I mentioned that I'd like to see a new "blog to today's date" type button that way it removes needless steps. At leat one person agreed with me. If you do to, how about hitting the thread with a few more 'yeah good idea'...

Just trying to pad my post count too, 1911 and counting, LOL!

Agreed! You're talking about the 'Blog' button in the inspire page, right? I thought that was funny that it would do that...

Why not just *1* button? 'Reply' which takes you to TODAY'S inspires and also brings up their blog page...makes sense to me...

I hear you all, one button that brings you to today would be perfect.  I never understood the current 'Reply' button when it posts it in your log, like how is the other person suppose to know that!

I thought I was doing something wrong until I asked someone -

seems like reply should be a reply to their post and blog should take you to their log if you want to post something unrelated to their originial post

and i posted this on the with the other posts about blogging and replying - LOL

Crap, I'm either:

a) injured or

b) Just spent $200 on running shoes I can't wear (Nikes).

My right arch is really, really sore right now after runs in the Nikes... and it kills me if I wear them out to walk. Guess I get back in the Mizunos stat!

I wear Mizuno's too and I can't wear Nikes at all, too narrow for me.  BTW, what did you buy for $200, is Cali that expensive!

I can wear Nike in the winter, but totherwise, they are too narrow. I love the wide toe box on the Mizunos.

Umm what do you normally run in? Its very close to your marathon to be switching the shoes you wear...

Having said that Id do two things....

1. Try and change the shoes

2. Stretch and ice...

No point risking an injury....

Going to my inlaws house in Playa Carrillo Costa Rica.  I've tried the TI dvd before, but didn't get very far.  I'll give it another shot though.

ooooooh, how long will you be there?

be sure to take lots of pics to share!

We'll be gone for 3 1/2 weeks.  There is a rumor that we might be getting dsl at the house there on December 1st.  We'll see what happens.  Dial up is pretty iffy down there.  Hoping not to miss out on TWISNIBBIN fun..... Going to have lots of swimming time.  I bought a kickboard and pull buoy today to take with me.

barqhead - 2007-11-13 12:04 PM Glad everyone made it to the new thread! Just got back from pilates and a few errands. I agree with Donto about fins. They are an excellent way to work on your kick and other stroke mechanics as long as you mix it up doing sets with and without them because you can become dependent on them! OK Tammy. I looked at your logs back through August and you definitely need to increase your time in the pool. I wanted to see how much yardage you are used to doing so if I gave you a 3000 yard work out you wouldn't freak out or get offended! I'm gonna try to work out a 3 week 3 to 4 sessions per week swim schedule for you. I'll pm it to you when I'm done. My stomach is growling!!! I'm gonna eat a sensible lunch now so I won't stuff my face out of starvation later. See ya in a few, twinibbuns! Pam

Pam - THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! YOU ROCK! I have lots of questions.  I'll pm you with specifics.

spokes - 2007-11-13 4:38 PM So what do you think... massage, ice a little rest? What's weird is running doesn't hurt, but walking a lot DOES.

Dang, that sounds like my PF! Massage it, see if you have any knots in there that can be worked out, stretch the heck out of those calf's. I like rolling mine on a frozen bottle of water. Gatoraid bottles (go gators!) with all those little ridges are nice as they massage while icing.

I don't think its PF, I think its THIS:

http://www.massagetherapypractice.com/Text/1180360627343-3229/pC/1164930096301-0119/

I know that my calves have been very, very tight. But I'm going back to running in Mizunos.

Just be careful my PF started with tight and sore arches... (as well as my rock solid inflexible calves but thats been an issue forever and ever and ever!)

then a few days later i started waking up with the classic PF symptoms.... so watch it and be careful!

Dee - I LOVE YOU!!!

I had the most delightful freestyle swim over lunch...

OMG, it truly is 90% arms and 10% legs!!!!

Without even doing flip turns, my average 100m time was 2.5 mins.

I am floating on air, I am SOOOO excited!!
(no, really?  Tell us something we don't know)

Morning, Tammy. TI has some good points, but there are three things I've seen in the book that I don't agree with. 1. You need to kick, you cannot just drag your legs through the water. This saves no energy!! 2. During the recovery portion of the stroke (when your arm is out of the water) reach as far forward with your hand OUT of the water. Do not let your hand enter the water near your head, then extend it under the water. More tiring, more drag! 3. I don't like how far underwater they want your head. To me, the water line should be at or slightly above your forehead, not at the back of your head. What part of swimming do you struggle with? Pull, kick, body position, breathing? Or do you want to build speed and endurance? I can pm you some workouts if you let me know what you want to accomplish. Have a good one! Pam

Well now, that's a very good question. Ultimate goal is to get faster. I believe to get faster, I need to be more efficient in the water. Problems that I am aware of now:

1. My butt and legs are too low in the water. When I use the pull buoy between my knees I can definitely feel the difference, but I don't know how to correct it swimming without the buoy.

2. When I swim laps, I usually concentrate on reaching out as far as I can, feeling my lats working. When I do this, I can usually get a good roll going and it also seems to relax me. The problem is that if I start thinking about anything else, EVERYTHING falls apart. I don't know how to think about stroke, body position, and kicking all at the same time.

3. I feel like I have one speed. Slow. If I try harder, I actually slow down. If I feel like I'm really poking along, but relaxed, I go a little faster.

I did learn how to bilaterally breath this fall. Is this something you actually do in a race situation? I've never noticed swimmers bilaterally breathing in a race.

Thanks!

I did see the link to the 50 swim workouts. I have to figure out what they are talking about before I can actually do one! I'll take another look at them when I have a little longer.

T,

Bilateral breathing you'll need if the OWS has wind and waves and the swim has legs that are perpendicular to the waves. One way you'll HAVE to breath on one side and the return on the other side. All of my tri's this year had lot's of wind and big waves to them! Also if the sun is rising on one side it sure e is annoying to have to look into it all the time when you can just turn to the other side!

My legs and hips use to sink too and was able to correct it with proper kicking. I developed my kick using Fins and a kickboard, big diff after a month, I was so weak with an improper and dragging kick before that. My first length with fins was 20 seconds slower than my 3rd length when I first got them! Before that if I used a kickboard without fin's I could go backwards at times!

I have been borrowing a pair of Finis freestyle paddles from a friend since early Sept. On the first length I was a total mess with them, after 2 full laps I began to understand what I've been doing wrong. After a month of using them I finally developed the memory to have the proper stroke from beginning to end. IMHO, for the price they are probably one of the best tools one can use to get the proper stroke developed. But without the correct kick (i.e. non-dragging) I'd still be fighting myself. My "slow" speed went from 2:20's to 1:55's after a month.  I have a lot of endurance work to still do but that's for next months challenge

Hope this helps!

Thanks.  This info helps ALOT!  The OWS breathing makes alot of sense.   It is also nice to have the reinforcement for the kickboard.  I've been drilling with one, but never really understood the reasoning....  I think between the advice here and Pam's schedule, I will be able to improve my swim significantly!

What about using the paddles made such a big difference for you?

I see the talked slowed down a bit since I checked in this morning. It's getting harder to keep up but I did notice talk about swimming, something that we're all slowly getting better at, at least from what I have read.

Today is a busy day but I hope to get in a short run this evening or tomorrow morning depending how my left ankle is feeling. Either way i should be hitting the pool tomorrow.

Also I forgot to report that my first Tri is in 12 days (San Dimas Turkey Tri, 25NOV). That will have made for a busy month of training and races attended.

Ok back to work, check in later.

Sigh...race season goes into November in CA...

So how you feelin' about the tri Hector?  What do you feel are your strong and weak areas?  What things are you excited about (no...besides the gals on this thread) and nervous about?

Hard to answer without ever really having done one. I've been hitting all areas and making good progress. I think swimming is my weakest area but I will continue to hit it the rest of the month. So I guess swimming is my nervous area as I have yet to do any OWS and I still need to try on my wetsuit, which I have not done either.

Guess the only thing I would add is to practice your transitions a time or two before the race.  There is always something you miss at the race if you try to go through it in your mind.  By going through the motions, you can have an efficient system in place rather than fumbling around.  Sounds silly, but it can shave the seconds off if you're prepared.
