Keep in mind that most days my work outs are done before I eat and then I am starving when I get done. Like today. My typical breakfast is 2 fried eggs and some sort of cereal -- Cheerios on work days, oatmeal on days off when the kitchen is clean. Sometimes I'll also have a banana on the drive in. I do my running in the morning before breakfast; so those days I get up at 5:00 and am out the door ASAP. I also have to have everything (clothes, lunches, etc.) pretty well organized the night before because I have to be out the door, with both girls dressed and in tow by 7:00. (6:50 would be even better, but at least they don't squawk when I come screaming in 10 minutes before I start teaching the kids at 8:00) ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() no, I don't eat the same thing...so if I swim, I'll have a boost before then toast after...or cereal before and a yogurt after if I have to rush off somewhere and can't go home. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Most early morning workouts consist of a half a whole wheat bagel with PB or Jelly but not both. Then after the workout a piece of fruit. If I was going on a long bike I'd probably do the bagel and an Ensure Plus. Race morning I usually don't like too much in my stomach and will go with an Ensure + a banana before the race. As for getting stuff together the night before that is a MUST or I would never get out the door in time. Tuesday I got my swim stuff out and then my work clothes to go with me and I knew I was biking and had a mental note that all that was in the car and then I needed clothes for the game so I had all that too. Got to work and realized I had my bike, shoes and helmet but no bike clothes...I almost lost it after all that work and then realized I had some spandex shorts and a top in my locker that I usually do my weight in so it all worked out. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Unless its a long run or ride I don't eat before hand. After I have scrambled eggbeaters (sometimes with cheese, sometimes with hotsauce, sometimes with leftover veggies) and yogurt with kashi go lean cereal and a piece of fruit. 300-400 calories. Before a long run or ride I wake up 3 hours before hand and eat oatmeal with bleery eyes. Then I go back to sleep until its time to run. This is better in the winter when I run at 10 am. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pre-race usually involves a smoothie and instant oatmeal spaced out a bit. Normal training time again involves the smoothie, and granola or pancakes or eggs. I don't do a lot in the morning during the week, but if I do, I may just go with either a smoothie or a gel, depending upon what is planned. If I am doing a ride of less than 2 hours, I may just get up, and drink something and go, then try and fuel well when I get back (old habits) |

It's rather boring, but I hate reinventing the wheel |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I actually felt like I was "training" today when, at the pool, I pulled out my paper plan, propped it up at the end of my lane, then went on to do some actual speedwork and endurance-building types of drills -- as opposed to just doing the yardage grind-'em-outs. It was actually quite a bit more interesting to work from a plan, and to do a variety of things. The time went really fast and I feel like I accomplished something. Sweet. As I read about you guys and the events that you're starting to do, I'm very anxious to get going myself! Thanks for the inspiration and hard work -- it impacts those who are following your progress, like me! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Some good news and some not so good news. First the not-so-good....... So here I am after working hard the past few months, one week out from an attempt at a big 10K PR at the Seoul Marathon on 3/2.....and my right foot is so tender and painful due to PF that I can barely walk....and not just in the morning. The best I can do is work on the elliptical all week and just hope I can salvage this run. I have a feeling, though. that even if I get the pain to dissipate over the next week, it's going to come right back when I try to run. Very, very disappointed in this turn of events, especially after being sick for three weeks in January...I was really looking forwsard to killing my old PR........maybe a miracle will occur! In better news, I was able to use miles to book our family flight from Seoul to Bali and now need to register for the 2nd Annual Bali International Oly Tri on June 29th. Awesome!! This will be our third time going to Bali; the last time being in 2002 just one month before the bombing at Kuta. It is an absolutely incredible place, and I can't wait to go back......and someday I'm going to go by myself and do a bicycle tour of the entire island....and go where the tourists never go.....I'm stoked!! This tri is going to be an absolute blast, but will need to try and prep for the equatorial heat. The swim will be most welcome, because even by 9am it is broiling hot under the Balinese sun! Going to go watch Survivor now.........and ice my heel........ Everyone have a great weekend. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() any chance you can find a massage therapist that does active release? our friend had PF for YEARS, and was moments away from surgery when he went to an ART therapist and *poof* it went away...this was literally after years of trying *everything*. I'd say run the race to your best ability, but don't expect a miracle...then get that foot back to health for your TRI in BALI!!!! How very amazing that will be. Look at the big picture. Many years ago I applied for Survivor. Obviously they didn't pick me |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bob does tris in Bali. I get the Detroit River and he gets Bali. Sometimes I get the Niagara River, and maybe the ice cold Great Lakes. But never Bali. Life is not fair. Have you been using the sock for your PF? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't get Bali either nor do I get decadent wine dinners. .. But I do get year round training that is rarely interrupted. Yesterday was 80 degrees in February!!! Gotta love that. |

At the end of the winter we'll have about two inches of dirt that appears to be concrete covering our garage floor that has shed from the frozen dirt/snow/ice mixture that melts off our cars. (Our garage is heated.) The interesting thing (to me) is that since I live on a very rich historical gold mining hill, I actually panned that garage floor dirt down once and found tiny specks of gold and lots of other heavy minerals in it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mimi...why are you up at 6:30 on a Sunday? That's just wrong in every way. Hope your training went well. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was going to talk about the often neglected side of training, the mental side...so, chew on that and I shall be profound later. I play so many mental games with myself that I may be split personality. Back when I was fast on a bike, it was mentally intimidating for me to try to set a training PR on a long course so I'd set my watch at a 2 minute countdown repeat. My policy was I was going to push hard but anytime that timer would beep I could loaf for two minutes if need be. Another thing I'd do is I'd push super hard for the first ten miles or so and then check my split, if my time was below my PR split, I'd just give up and cruise the rest. If not it was on. So in my mind at the start, all I had to do was ride hard for ten miles and then I could loaf. Much less intimidating. I'll start doing both of these again this summer once I start really pushing my bike training. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tri-chic - 2008-02-24 12:38 PM Mimi...why are you up at 6:30 on a Sunday? That's just wrong in every way. Hope your training went well. It was 7:30 here when I posted...but I was up at 6:30. Had to get my training done, as it was then or never because of some plans with the fam. Of course, now those plans look like they aren't going to happen this afternoon, so I could have slept in afterall So mind games. Yes. I have had a thing in the past with sabotaging myself, especially in races, but also in training. That way, if I didn't do as well as I wanted, I could blame it on the poor nutrition, lack of sleep, etc... (I guess that's what I was doing). What I got from my year of IM focused training was a positive outlook. I'm not one for the self help mumbo jumbo - I don't have positive things posted on my bathroom mirror or whatever. But, I did start to use visualization during my training...not on purpose, it just happened. I often imagined the finish at IMFL while running, and it would set me in a great place. On the bike, if I was struggling in a training ride, I would just keep telling myself I could do it. This kind of stuff. I became thankful for what I was able to do on a daily basis. Having an inspiration was helpful (the young man with MD), but it really became more than that. I am an ordinary 41 year old person. I am able to do extraordinary things that most people I know (outside of triathlon) wouldn't dream of trying (though they could do it, too). If I don't win a race or hit a certain time, I am still extraordinary. The world doesn't stop spinning. My family and friends still love me. I don't lose a sponsorship or a paycheck. I am doing this to enhance my life, not detract from it. If we are constatly beating ourselves up for our failures, are we in the end enhancing our lives?? Pressure is good, it helps us to challenge ourselves and grow. But it shouldn't be such that we sacrifice our self worth and what is really important in this whole game, which is the fact that we have the ability to push ourselves beyond what we ever thought we could. We have that ability. Many don't. Anyway, that's deeper than I intended to go. I'm not saying to post a positive thought a day in your blog (but by all means go ahead if you want), just try to keep thoughts regarding your training positive. All your swim, bike, run and races aren't going to be the best...learn from them and move on. And enjoy the ride. |
