I completed my first race of the year today, the Country Music Half Marathon. This was my first 1/2. Fun race, tough course. Here's the race report: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=112122&posts=2#M1363999

Congrats on your first 1/2 mary JT. That's awesome!
I have done the Rock and Roll 1/2 in Virginia Beach so I know what you mean about the crowded start. Unfortunately with a race that size I am not sure what they can do to reduce the congestion?

So...do you see another 1/2 marathon in future soon?

I have two spint tri's in my near future. I am more excited about thr tri's than the 1/2. I do have a 1/2 planned in Oct. It's The Middle Half. It's in my hometown of Murfreesboro. This will be the 2nd year they have put on this event. I hear it was very well planned last year. Last year they limited it to 1000 people.

One of the ladies I train with and I have set the goal to do a sub 2:00. This means I need to shave 26 minutes off the one I did yesterday. I think I can do it. One thing, this will be a flat course instead of a hilly on like I ran yesterday. Another thing is that I am going to get away from running with my group on race day. I like training with them but I feel like during the race I need to go do my best. We all stopped to use the bathroom during the race. I was the only guy (should have only taken me a few seconds) but I waited on the other 3 ladies. I figure I lost 5 minutes. We also slowed down our pace because one of the ladies was struggling a little bit.

I am very glad I ran with them. They are great people and a lot of fun, but in the next race I am going out on my own. I feel like due to these couple of things and a lack of hills in the next race a sub 2:00 is very possible.

JT...
Your plan on your own sounds good. I too have a training and partner and although we train together we do not race together. Racing is too personal and individualized to do that. When we first starting racing in the same races we sort of just said, 'just do what you have to do'.

I am sure you can run a sub 2 hr 1/2 marathon. Are you doing any speed work?

My goal is to work on some speed work over the next month. I have 2 spints coming up, one with a 2 mile run and one with a 4 mile run. I really want to work on my speed for these events. What is funny, the last 1/2 mile I ran a 6:30 pace. Part of it was downhill and I was ready to be finished with the race.

I used to be able to run a sub 6:00/mile when I was younger, so I know I am capable. It just worked out where our group trained with a 10:30 pace.

I know one of my training partners wants to do a sub 2:00 in the half. We are going to work together. She is a strong runner and we should be able to challenge each other.

First 1/2 mary now under my belt with a 1:50 time. (8:25 pace) It was close to my target so I can live with that. (JT .... you can do it too, < 2h 1/2 mary) The Derby race was the best race event I have ever run in with 10,000 people. It was crazy ...

Now off to the next big hill a HIM, MAY 17th...... Mike, any advice this is my first, 3 weeks away... Oh $&^%$ it will be here before I know it .........

I think that you need to do all three types of runs; Long, Tempo and Speed work. I know you can get the <2h if you keep a good balance. I bet that by the end of summer you will be there.

Today I did a swim Time Trial (1000 m) at 18:57. If I got it right (a 1.1 factor) then this is a 1:43 per 100 yd pace.  Tongue out Last TT for 1000 yd 19:31 (1:57pace) on 11/1/2007

Focusing on your form sure makes a difference.....

Greg, great swim!

I know it has been a while since I have posted anything regarding training. The new job has certainly curtailed my activities.

Many of you have heard my trials and tribulations with swimming and needless to say it has been a major challenge. However, I had a major first today, to this point I have only been able to swim about 200meters without stopping and that was pushing it. Today, I swam 800 meters w/o stopping in about 20 minutes. Now the rest of the workout was another story as I basically threw in the towel as I was so stoked to have made it this far.

For those of you who have struggled with the pool, give the 0to1650 workout plan a try as it certainly helped me get over a huge hurdle that quite honestly I never thought I would be able to overcome.

Thanks for listening.

Yes I did. I have taken a few days off after the 1/2. I have plans to swim tonight. It will be my first swim in over a week. I will be interested to see if I can still get that distance.

Congrats on the new milestone.

I think some from our group are doing this race. I'm not sure if they have a 1/2 associated with it. I thought about checking in to it but if I remember correctly it is a bad weekend for me.

Well my run endurance is not where I want it to be so I'm going to skip the duathlon I had hoped to do on the May 10th weekend. I am finally running a sold 5km run now although I still take a one minute walk break halfway. But the du has me doing a 5k run, a 30k bike, and another 5k run. I can probably do it, but I don't want to re-injure my shins since it has taken me MONTHS to get to this point again. I am going to skip the du and keep working towards my triathlon next August. I don't want anything to get in the way of my first tri.

I'm disappointed though because I would have liked to have had the transition experience. Oh well...

I did my first tri of the year a few weeks ago and wanted to share a little bit. I work in Californis but live in Portland so I have too much time away from family but use it for training. I flew my wife down for the race and we met up with a bunch of people from the masters swim group I train with. It was a blast!!!! If you have the opportunity go to a race with some of the prople you train with - the support and comraderie are great - my wife even approves of my friends down here! LOL. I was great watching as the Olympians came in (I did the sprint) and we cheered for each one as they came across the finish line - I even got harrassed by one of my friends during my T1 while he was waiting for the Oly to start. Thus the unsuerty about the July races - they have directed me to invite my wife down for June Lake the same weekend as a race at home, a cool decision to make .
BTW the guy who was harassing me and I are refounding the Antelope Valley Triathlon Club, for fun, so if anyone is up in this area drop a line!

Hey Gang...

Just got back from our weekend in White Lake. I am exhausted. Scott and I volunteered at the 1/2 IM yesterday and then raced today.

I came in 3rd in my age group but the official times are not yet posted so I won't be posting my race report until they are. Set Up events is usually good at getting them posted by the next day!

I had a great swim, bike and run today and I PR'd this race course from last year by close to 5 mins!!

I hope everyone had a great weekend racing or training!!

Leanne

Mike and Dave...how'd your races go this weekend?
