So Suzy the shoe expert person......

I think this has been asked of you before but,

Looking for shoes for a 200-210 lb guy. slightly bowed tibia's(ala pronator) and a heel striker. Has broken away from running with custom orthotics.

What you recommend? Do you think he needs a stability shoe? or a neutral shoe? motion control?

What is this person running in now?  My best advice is to go to a running store and have someone fit this "person" based on a short run on their TM or outside the store.  My gut says to go from custom orthotics to no orthotics and a neutral shoe would be an error,  but I think too much stability can be a bad thing too.  If there is NO way to get a gait analysis done, I would go with a stability shoe and consider OTC orthotics.

I dumped my custom orthotics and went with a Birkie Sport insole with the Saucony Cortanas that have just a touch of stability and a 4mm heel to toe drop.  I did try several less stable, more minimal shoes (e.g. Kinvaras), but felt vulnerable in them.  I am only a slight over pronator and have a very modest heel strike when I get tired.

you know the "he' is me right?

Yep.

Dan, way too low!

Bought some brooks adrenaline. We'll see

I think that is a reasonable choice.  I used to run in Adrenalines for a very long time when I was pounding out big mileage.  Then I moved to Brooks Launch before settling on the Saucony Cortanas.  Let us know how they work for you.

The one thing I really noticed was the different landing. I've nver ran in a guided shoe before. Always been neutral shoes.

I had pulled my orthotics out 6 weeks ago, and have been running in my Glycerine's which are a neutral shoe. I put an Andrenaline on one foot and Glycerine on the other and it felt like night and day.

It may have been a neutral shoe, but it had additional stability because of the orthotic.  I like the idea of getting out of orthotics if you can do it.  It took me a long time to realize I could get by with something less stable.   I also made that mistake of going into something too neutral (Newtons) which caused me a hamstring injury due to the landing pattern.  Live and learn.  Be careful and mindful.

AWESOME PICS!!!

suz, it was small that day! much more fun on race day!!!! on race day peeps were puking in the water.  jarrett and justins wife jennifer said a bunch of folks would not go back in for the second lap.  one poor guy apparently stood on the beach for several minutes just staring at the water.  he went in, wave hit him.  he came right back out and turned in his chip.

one of the coolest things was once past the break across the a bar we had an awesome swell.  not sure what the others did but in order for me to sight i had to look back as i took a breath in order to time the swell.  once on top of the swell you could see really far.  anywhere else you could pretty much see straight up and that was about it.

here's a pic a friend of jeremy's took of the second lap.  i seriously wonder what the sea life was thinking about all of this!

but as rough as this was...  a beach start ain't even in the same league as a deep water start as far as contact, positioning etc..

Yep, I was on of those guys puking and puking and puking. Now that I have had time to think about it. I think the stomach bug I got in the last couple of weeks before the race played a part in my down fall.  I wonder if I'd taken motion sickness pills before the race if that would have helped.

Ironman New Zealand sounds like a great destination race.

One of the world’s biggest fresh water lakes offers arguably the best swim on the circuit.  A two-loop bike course comes back through town before heading through the forests and a three-loop run course leaves you no chance to escape the thousands of spectators. Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain IRONMAN New Zealand allows you to realize your IRONMAN potential in one of the world’s most beautiful places.

I'm putting it IM New Zealand on my bucket list of races to do.

Hotties all around!  Linda, I total dig the kit!  And you match Johnny Boy!

I like the aerial view of the water, still would need to spend a year living by an ocean to get me into an IM ocean swim. Hmmmm, maybe I could stay in Kauai a little longer this year.
