Pro 3906 St Charles, IL | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread jazz82482 - 2010-07-10 6:19 PM I have recently started using SaltStick salt capsules for my electrolyte replacement and I really like them. Endurolytes didn't seem to be working for me, and now I know why- they don't have enough sodium in them- only 40mg per capsule. Saltstick has 250mg per capsule, which is more on par for what you need when you sweat- or at least, what I need. I don't like to drink a lot of gatorade, I prefer water, so I've been working on supplementing with saltstick capsules and it seems to be working for me. Same with me. I don't drink GE ( or didn't in the past ). On the bike water and Infinit, and on the run, coke and water. So I got my salt from endurolytes. Definitely feel a difference between the salt stick tabs and the endurolytes. Hammer makes good stuff, but for me, my body likes the extra sodium. |

Driving, yes, but from Seattle to Lake Placid with 4 people in an Audi A3. So it's like flying in a Cessna. :-) We did get a rooftop cargo box, so I think I'll bring both, for the lower pre-race angst factor if nothing else. |

Master 1471 Dunedin | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2010-07-11 3:46 PM I used to believe they would always find the coolest spot in the lake and get that 'magical' temp to allow wet suits, but ever since eagleman this year, I see it slightly differently. Thoughts? I talked to a guy that KQed at LP twice and he seems to think that with 3,000 starters that they will certainly find the coldest spot in the lake, dump some ice in it, and read the water temp to make it wetsuit legal. Now... for a race like this (not that it matters to me), but if it's on the "cusp" is there a point where a wetsuit is optional, but if you wear it you aren't eligible for age group awards?? Would that effect who gets a Kona spot? Again, merely curiosity pushing me to ask. |

Member 66 | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread jackjack - 2010-07-10 7:10 AM OK let's add the peeing thing from the girls perspective too Last time yes I did pee on the bike. It took a while to find a place that was right and not many people around but you still feel self conscious. I had practiced once in training so knew I could do it (it's actually quite hard to relax enough first time). I found that I had to really chuck a lot of water onto my bike shorts afterwards to rinse off cos else it seemed to make me sore This time I don't know. I don't want to have to stop BUT I am riding a different bike and my bento box doesn't fit at the front end of my top tube (wires in way) so I have to have it at the back end which is right under the saddle and I don't want to pee on my nutrition I'm with you Jackie...i think it depends WHEN I have to pee....I've tried in training without much success....but if its after mile 90...screw it, im going on the bike!! |

Master 2406 Bellevue, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread PennState - 2010-07-11 12:46 PM Not trying to raise anxiety, but LP may not even be wet suit legal this year. On ST they were discussing this possibility. I doubt anyone drop out of the race if it wasn't wet suit legal, but it would surely be an unpopular decision wouldn't it? I used to believe they would always find the coolest spot in the lake and get that 'magical' temp to allow wet suits, but ever since eagleman this year, I see it slightly differently. Thoughts? With 3000 participants, there are bound to be some people already very anxious about the swim and they'd first wig out and second drop out with a "no wetsuits" ruling. Not me, though. Yesterday I did 4500 straight swim in the pool. And I did IM Cozumel without a wetsuit, but of course that was saltwater. It's not all that more supportive than freshwater - certainly not like a wetsuit. I can do 2.4 miles in a lake without a wetsuit. I think a lot of people could, even if they never have. EDIT: I read the ST thread. Doesn't seem very possible that IMLP will be non-wetsuit, but as you say, Eagleman was non-wetsuit to the surprise of everyone. I imagine WTC would want it to be a wetsuit swim (they have your $$$ for this year, but it may put a crimp in next year), but a USAT official would be neutral. Do they have USAT people on hand? Who decides? Edited by brucemorgan 2010-07-11 10:52 PM |

Master 2468 Muskego, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Okinawa waters are usually 70-86 degrees all year long so whenever I'm in my wetsuit it's usually close to or over the cutoff line but I need the practice. It's hot right now in the 80's and I'm looking forward to getting in a bit of cooler water in a few days. But, like Bruce said, 2.4 miles with or without a suit we should all be ready by now. |

Nothing I can do about it now. My confidence in doing well at LP is not good. I just hope I can pull to the line healthy, uninjured and race with all you fine people. Maybe come close to last years time and with Gods grace finish healthy. Sorry to be such a drag I am usually positive. Just being honest with myself I guess. One bad/moderate workout does not take away from the many hours of great work and the confidence of great racing all season thus far. Do not dwell on one workout, dwell on the consistancy that got you here. |

Extreme Veteran 596 Worcester, MA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I am pretty sure that mirror lake is spring fed. That being said, it should be pretty cool, as if I remember last year, you could find the cold spots. If that's the case, then unless it stays in the high 90's it will probably be ok - or at least that's what I'm telling myself. Temps are looking like 80s during the day and 50/60/s at night, so we will probably be ok. I'm sure the forecast will change about a million times between now and then, but we'll see what happens. http://www.hamweather.net/cgi-bin/hw3/hw3.cgi?config=&forecast=pass&pass=zone_ext&place=lake+placid&state=ny&zipcode=12946&country=us&county=36031&zone=NYZ034&icao=KSLK |

I'm just wondering where our numbers are. The taper crazies are in full effect here now. |

I just bring everything, full and half wetsuit and speed suit to every race. Speed suit paid off at Eagleman this year. It did not make my swim time better, but it was a confidence booster. Good luck and stay safe, we are close. Jim |

1) The mandatory meeting isn't 'mandatory' but if you're asking the next questions, YES...go and be early. I'm serious. 2) No, this is just an open swim time. Gatorade, is sponsoring the pre-swim time. It's not on race day. Anybody can swim at this time. Your wife too! They are just there to hold your stuff for you and you get it back when you're done swimming. 3) Once you put your bike in transition the day before the race, it will NOT be allowed out until race day when you're on it for the bike. That means any adjustments you need to make ensure they are done before 3 pm on the 24th (day before the race) - You don't have to put any nutrition on the bike. You will have access to it the next morning. - You will drop off your transition bags (T1 and T2) bags. You will NOT have access to these bags the morning of the race. (That is how it was after WTC took over all the IM races). You use to be able to access T1/2 bags morning of, not any longer. But since you are going to the Mandatory Athlete meeting, you can ask that question. (If you don't, I will be) 4) Show up race morning, put all of your water bottles onto your bike and pump up your tires. You will also bring special needs bags and hand them off to the volenteers. Those are great questions! |
