My training is going well.  I think I'm in great shape and improving.  The only downer is that my heels hurt like crazy.  Makes it hard to walk and the pain is never gone.

Got to run 11 miles yesterday with my daughter.  We didn't finish until after dark and needed my head lamp to help us navigate the trails.  Yes it was off-road and wet and drizzly but was in the lower 60s and we were comfy with shorts and tshirts until towards the end when I added a long sleeve T.

This morning's swim was another in an unbroken string of improved shoulder function.  Each time I swim it improves my shoulder.  Great therapy.  Today I even used the paddles during the pull sets (but kept it gentle).

I turned in some 100s under 1:40 (like a 1:30 in a yard pool) and they felt comfortable too.  I think that my technique has improved a lot since the surgery.  I've improved my catch and my body position through the period of 1-arm swimming.  I honestly feel like I can PR in the 500 free right now.

Sorry about the foot pain. What about massage therapy or reflexology?

As stated by me and others many times, you're an animal.  Had I been the one with the torn up shoulder I wouldn't have been likely to go to the pool.  I would probably have remained a sluggard and couch potato.

I am working my way back into running right now myself so I am quite envious of your 11 mile run.  I ran 3 miles yesterday at an easy pace and I actually worked to slow it down for much of the time.  I was largely unsuccessful slowing down but I was distracted quite a lot.  Another BT'er posted in another forum that she was going to do 26 minutes S/B/R yesterday to remember the victims from Ct. and I thought it was a great gesture and I jumped on board.  The thought was to spend the time thinking about the victims and not have any distractions such as the TV or ipod, etc. So I thought of that for my run and ride yesterday.

The one place I broke the "26 for 26" was the pool where I did 6x250 on 4:00.  This was a brutal pace but I was able to hold on for all of them with only one of them coming in much off the mark I'd set for targets.  My bests and worsts from the MS were 3:44 and 3:51.  Swimming is something I haven't improved much on a long time and I am changing my WO's up to attempt to make a few gains over the winter.

strikyr - 2012-12-17 5:44 PM I just finished my week 3 day 1 Jorge winter cycling program workout and I had my first OBE, yep an outer body experience. With about 5 minutes to go in the 20 minute FT test one minute I was on the bike the next minute I was floating above it watching myself pedal. I'm trying to figure out what is worse 13 more weeks of this or the potential 17 hour IM. Needless to say I had a really good workout tonight Laughing

That's hilarious!

I can't say I've worked that hard to have an OBE but maybe I'm just to scared to work that hard.

I know the tests are simply ridiculous and knowing you have to do them once a month made me want to jump of a cliff.  Trouble is, there are no hills in northern Indiana much less cliff's to jump from.

Enjoy the brutality!Laughing

The 4 of us (mentors) have been messaging each other discussing how we are going to proceed.  We all have decided to stick together.  As soon as the new groups open I will be throwing our names out there for consideration again.

We are still discussing what the group will look like when it does open up.  I or one of the the other mentors will post our intentions in this forum before we go live in the new session, if possible.

Frankly I expect this group to fill VERY rapidly once it becomes opened.

Also, it sounds like there could be some really cool changes coming to the mentor groups.  Yep, i guess you'll just have to with and see.  It supper secret squirrel snot ya know.  If I told you you I'd have to.............well never mind.

Jo63 - 2012-12-17 9:50 PM Sorry about the foot pain. What about massage therapy or reflexology?

I don't know, I will look in to that.

I don't think massage will likely help the bursitis.  It's caused by a haglunds deformity (bone spur) and it's the result of constant pressure on the back of the heel by shoes...so I'm wondering if massage wouldn't be more of the irritation that caused the problem anyway...

But I have been wondering if massage of the calf muscles might not be a decent proxy for stretching.  I can't effectively stretch my calves, and haven't been able to for years now.  So they are tight and tight calves contribute to the pain...perhaps foam rolling?

I'm going to see my orthopedic guy specifically for this issue.  The thing I want to avoid is the surgical fix (removing the bone spurs) because the procedure requires removal of the achilles tendon from the heel, cutting the bone, then anchoring the tendon back on....and the long rehab involved in another tendon repair...

Because doing so presses the achilles tendon very hard against the bone spurs and hurts, but the pain is nothing compared to the pain when I release the stretch.  It's like a knife is being stabbed in to my heel!

Google "Haglunds Deformity" and you should be able to get a mental picture of the issue.

I can't believe what a nice day it turned out to be. It's like 1:40 pm on Dec 18th and I'm out running in freakin shorts and it's in the low 50's lol. I'm thinking it doesn't get any better than this. I was able to get in a shade under 9 miles today. Longest run in quite a while. Ok I know it doesn't compare to Jonathan running at 4 am in the snow but it is nice to be off from work and to take adavantage of the nice weather once in a while.

Tony,

You'd better enjoy these last few runs because you only have 3 days left until the world ends.

Seriously, it amazes me that people have allowed a Hollywood movie to make them question Dec 21.  I have some friends on FB that are completely into the "new earth" thing that is supposed to happen according to a Mayan priest on youtube.  This same Mayan priest is willing to sell you the way to make it through the apocalypse.

While I know you guys didn't take offense to my ghetto remark I just wanted to prove that I could go ghetto as well. I put my MacGyver skills and ingenuity to use to get my KK bike computer set up temporarily for the winter. Amazing what you can do with garbage bag ties. Oh the IMWI logo is there for motivation to keep the pedals moving within the prescribed power range even when they don't want to. I was thinking of just putting a Jelly donut or a Guinness Stout there but I figured it probably wouldn't be in my best interest nutritionally.

I am editing to add my version of shoe covers.

Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies CLOSED AND GETTING OUR FIX

Jonathon, Jeff, Warren and myself have concluded our discussion about the upcoming mentor session and, as I stated earlier, we are all going to stick together for another one.  We have been able to create enough of an atmosphere of camaraderie, self abuse and sarcasm that we think it will be a great idea to continue to try to beat each other up through brutalizing each other in word and work out.

With that in mind we have also decided that we would like to include any other glutton for punishment that would like to follow us into new and darker territories.  We will dive deeper into the abyss of torture and pain only experienced in medieval times in dungeons and on the stretching racks.  If you wish to suffer longer and endure our macabre tendencies you will be welcomed in the pitch black darkness of brutality.

Seriously, our plan will be to accept all of you that would like a spot beginning soon.  Here are some of the things we are planning/moving ahead with:

  • Who wants in?  It would be great if we can get everyone on board that would like to be as soon as possible.
  • We want no one to feel any pressure whatsoever to leave or to stay.  We do however feel that each person should consider if you can learn more from other groups or possibly pick up alternative perspectives.  We want to make sure that each person has a solid foundation for becoming a better athlete and person through the mentor groups, be it in ours or another group.
  • We are going to limit the group to 15 mentee's  If all of the current, active participants decide to stay on, that will limit our new members to 6 more.  (The total number of participants in the group, including mentors, will be 19.  The starting number for the current session was 21....A few too many for us to manage we felt.)
  • Since we have become a pretty tight knit group we want to make the new group a very newcomer friendly place.  We want to avoid a "clique" kind of feel that may appear to others as they begin with us.
  • Expectations from each of you wouldn't really change much as it seems all of you follow all of the unwritten rules that we already have:
    Respecting each other.
    Teaching each other.
Counseling and/or consoling each other as appropriate.

I would like to take the time now, since I have the time, to thank each of you for being a part of this group.  While my role has been that of a mentor for this entire year, I would be lying if I were to say that I have learned nothing from all of you.  It is very much the opposite.  I have learned to articulate a little better (not much maybe) than I thought I was capable.  I have also learned that we are a very diverse group of people.  We all have differing goals and objectives that relate to triathlon, training and life in general.  There are all kinds of different family commitments that affect the way we train and race.  There are too many things to really be able to list.

Finally, I would like to reiterate that you are all welcome in the new group and if you chose to opt out no offense will be taken.

Please post your intentions when you are certain you would like to stay with the Asphalt Junkies.

Dirk I love the duct tape look it may not be very fashionable but it says hardcore to me. I'm pretty sure Tracy mentioned this little trick as well. I must admit I'm not the cold weather riders you guys are.

I definitely want to remain a part of the Asphalt Junkies so I'm in for another season. I honestly can say there is no way I could have accomplished half the things that I was able to do without the help and support of this group. I totally agree we have very diverse group of amazing people here. I want to thank everyone for their help and support this past season. I think both the mentors and the mentees have done a great job in making everyone feel like they were a part of the group regardless of how much experience or knowledge one had and I'm very thankful and grateful to everyone for sharing their knowledge and experiences with me.

For me I knew next to nothing when I joined the group and had very little to offer other then my support. Thanks to everyone I have been able to learn and grow by leaps and bounds. I hope to continue to do so with everyone's help and support and I for one would welcome and look forward to having new members join the group while I hope we can keep everyone else who has been participating as well.

I think the one thing I have learned is that the triathlete community is a special group of people who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences with newcomers like myself. I feel it is my responsibilty being part of this community to pay it forward and to help others. One of the most important things I learned this past season being part of this community and group which I believe is very true is that life is about helping others and about chasing you dreams. Being part of the group and the community has allowed me to do this. Looking forward to another season with everyone assuming the Mayans weren't correct Smile

Obviously I'm in again.  I think that Dirk covered everything, but I do want to emphasize the importance of changing up your mentors.  For a few years I had the same mentor and when I moved on it was a great experience.  This is no way an attempt to get anyone to leave the group.  I just would not feel comfortable holding anyone back from a move that could prove very beneficial.

In the new mentor group I plan on changing up my style of training and racing and I'm really excited to share that with everyone.  It's going to be another great year.

On an aside...any of you guys have a 14.5-16" calf???  I have a pair of zoot recovery pants that don't fit anymore.  I've used them a half a dozen times, but they were too short for me.  They are a size 3.  I think one of the ankles has a pull in it if I remember, but they work awesome....and they are free.  Just PM me if you're interested.
