I agree with you both. I think it is even more important for him because of his hip. Maybe I will get him a cert for second sole, where he has no choice to buy anything other than running shoes.

Karen - I love my Ghosts. I am on my third pair with no plans to change brands or models.

Scott - details on this gear....

Ok so not to jinx anything, but I've received 2 recruiting calls from local tri teams in the last week or so.  One would require using their coaching services too, which I don't want to do.  Exploring the possibility of joining the other.  Kinda weird getting recruited.  I was recruited for a little bit in HS for baseball, but it is entirely different when it's your friends doing the recruiting.

jarvy01 - 2012-11-30 9:05 AM I am going to get my husband a pair of running shoes for Christmas.  He'll never go into a store and spend the $ on a pair of nice fitting, comfortable shoes.  He wants to start running so he can do this half marathon, and yet he plans on training in his lawn mowing athletic shoes that are 2 year old (do you see what I'm working with here?!?!)  He had a hip replacement a year ago.  Any ideas on brand/type of shoe I should buy for him?

Does he know if he needs neutral, stability or whatever the other one is?  If not, he should have someone at a knowledgable running store watch him run.  I ran in stability shoes when I first started running because I didn't know any better and my friend recommended the shoes she wore.  Well, I kept getting injuring.  Went to 2 running stores and they both said I needed neutral shoes.  So that's what I wear now.  Still injure myslef, but different type of injuries that I'd say are more over use vs. wrong shoes.

I personally used to only wear Mizunos.  Switched to Saucony when Mizuno changed and I didn't like the new model.  Switched to Asics when Saucony switched and I started getting blisters with new model.  Still wear Asics, but not crazy about the model change, so...I just ordered 2 pair of Brooks to try.  One a regular shoe (Ghosts I think), and a pair of the minimalist shoes to try.  Not sure how they will work out but my friend had a 30% off discount so she ordered for me.

Jen --

Can you post a picture of what the bottom of his lawn mowing shoes look like?

Kelly - curious what you'll say about bottom of shoes.  What would a typical neutral runners look like?

The file has to be small enough to post on BT, under 50k, then you click below "attach a file after posting".  Usually you can resize files, or if you send from an iphone you can tell how big to send it.

Hope this helps.

I sent them to her.  They aren't really worn one one side or anything.  I should look at the bottom of the shoes he wears to work.  BTW, he's a total dirt ball.....there were clods of mud and grass on the bottom of the shoes.  I understand they're for mowing and lawn work, but at least shake them off a bit!!!!!

You can look at the wear patterns to get a good idea about pronation or supronation, heel striking, etc.  I'm an extreme supronator (which means I land to the outside of my foot and should be in neutral shoe).  My wear pattern shows more wear to the outside back and then a diagnol roll towards my big toe.  A pronator is going to show more to the inside.  Jen's husband's shoes are pretty even.  I'm not a big fan of corrective cast like shoes in general and I would suggest something like a Saucony Mirgage.  Its fairly neutral but has a little guidance if you slightly pronate and a little bit of cusioning, which makes it feel a little softer for a beginner runner.  Its a good place to start shoe wise.

Over the past few years, I've pushed myself into as neutral of a shoe as possible and am very happy with that.

So I just got an email from the WTC about various 70.3s opening registration.  Most start at $275 and bump to $300.  That's a price jump isn't it?

Speaking of Augusta opens tomorrow I know it doesn't usually sell out right away but saving $25 is still saving $25. Perhaps I can use that savings somewhere else. So is that a price jump from last year?

I was being snarky (although I do love the Masters and have been twice).  My ex-boyfriend of family was from Augusta so we spent a bit of time there.

The run most definitely, you go up and down the streets in town several times. Very easy for friends/family to see you multiple times. Not sure about the bike, Tom didn't try to see me on the bike. But people were out there so its probably doable. I loved the bike, very pretty & rolling. Swim is usually fast. And wetsuit legal. You can practically hop in & float down to exit. It's a great little town.

So I spontaneously applied for a job yesterday (internal with my company) and had a pre-interview. Yikes! It's my dream job, but location not sure. It's posted for Ft. Worth but when they found out I was interested (and know I'm from CA) they said location was somewhat flexible and tossed out Costa Mesa. Kind of nervous about the whole thing...

Haha Kelly, you had me worried it was a bad race Yea I would love to go see the Master's, heck I would just like to play one hole on that course so I could say I did. I have friends in Athens (you can only imagine how crazy it is down there today) and I am hoping they can come as well. We may even stay with them, of course I have not checked how close that is.

So I had some suspect moles removed yesterday. Last one came back negative so I have a good feeling these will as well. Just precautionary with my families history. So far I have been blessed and not had any family history stuff creep up on me

That is good. My family will like that. It will be a boost to see them multiple times as well.

Good Luck with the Job! I hope it works out for you!

I went in to the lab this morning for cholesterol, metabolic testing, etc....basically a full blood panel (she wants to test thyroid, vit d, iron, calcium).  I waited forever, but I am happy it's done.  Ate breakfast before going on my run, and I really think it was a bad idea.  Struggled with GI stuff the entire time.  I also had a runny nose.  Never fun!

I just have to add that I am NOT a fan of the juice cleanse.  My husband is an entirely different person right now, taking it out on everyone else.  Gross.  I will never participate in that (not that I feel I'd ever need to do one).

Juice fast..... yuck.  I can't imagine.  My kids are sick again.  We were supposed to go to a prom themed birthday party tonight.  Looks like I'm staying home with the girls.  Tomorrow's long ride might happen on the trainer during the Texans game too.  Might be hard to keep an even HR though.  LOL.
