Rough week. I have ran a total of 2 miles and thats it for the week so far. I hate not having my truck. I should get it back today so I hope to get a workout in tomorrow morning.

I still haven't gotten my appt. for the treadmill test. Not sure what is up with the other doctors office. How hard is it to schedule an appt.

I did find a tri club that meets 5 miles from my house so maybe I can get some local tips about good places to train and maybe fine a master program somewhere.

Swam this morning. Tried a new drill. It is supposed to help you increase your lung capacity. What you do is do 10x75s, on the first 25 you breathe every third stroke, next 25 every fifth stroke then the last 25 every seventh stroke. Take 15 sec rest at the end.

Fun drill, I think I will try doing these for a while.

One of my favorites is called 3-4-5-6 alternate breath drill. 4x25 swim first 25 using alt breathing taken a breath every 3 strokes, second 25 breath same side after 4 strokes, third breath on opposite sides after 5 strokes. On the 4th 25 breath every 6 strokes.  Repeat 3-4-5-6. During the drill rotate to side normally and look one eye under and one eye over the water.  Seems to help with body rotation as well as effciency.  Work too hard go anaerobic and you will run out of air.
I usually follow this with another drill, one arm swim. 4x50 swim 25 using the left arm only with the right arm held out on front.  Think catch with the left hand before each stroke.  Make the stroke smooth, strong and perfectly formed. Swim back. Then swim 25 using the right arm only.  Swim back.  Repeat.

Cheers

That also sounds like a good drill. I'd love to get to the point where I could do my endurance swims with a 5 stroke breathing rhythm.

Thanks

I like the idea of being able to go 5 comfortable in open water if needed, but swim at 3 just in case I have to miss a beat caused by wave, elbow, buoy. and when I sight forward I look but don't always take time to breath.  The longer I'm sighting the more I'm losing momentum and starting to sink at the hips.  If I'm charging in the water to catch a group of not be dropped out of a good draft, I'll go to 2 count.

I'm still perfecting OWS.  Another thought about 5 count breathing.  I've experienced some anxiety in rough water when I've keep my face in the dark to long.  It's like claustriphobia with a paranoid twist.  Can you taste lake water with your mouth tightly closed?  It goes away if I rotate more to the sky and get some daylight during the swim.  It's only happened once swimming diagonal across moderate rollers.  Just a random thought.

Hey all!
Just swinging by.  Schools are closed for tomorrow so wife and I trying to figure out who will home when with the kids.  Training going okay but I really need to get some some longer rides in.  I need to start getting some 3 hr rides in but between weather and family events that hasn't happened.

On the OWS and darkness issue.  The waters down here tend to be a bit murky.  Clearest race (down here) I could actually see my hand when it was fully extended and was amazed!  Otherwise I usually see nothing.

Mav - still getting hammered? (I meant the snow)

Lena - that electrical device still keeping you company (the treadmill silly!)?

Phil - hope the truck is back soon!

Fit - Starting to try out closed fist drills, interesting.

Mark - Trainer doesn't bother me like it does others.  If I have something to watch on tv I can ride for 2 hours.  Past that I start to get bored with TV.

The snow continues Gary!!!! We got another foot and then mother nature covered it with a coating of ice. Supposed to get another storm on Sat. Woo freaking Hoo!!!! I feel sorry for all the folks who are training for Boston. The roads are miserable and unsafe..so its the dreadmill or risk life and limb.

I have been getting my training in, mostly from home. Will try to venture to the gym today once the sun comes out and turns the ice to slush.

Morning everyone! Going to be snowing here today...sigh....

I would love to be able to do endurance swims using a 5 stroke breath count. I wouldn't want to race that way. I would be pushing myself too hard for that. but if I copuld get to the point where I was able to do 3,000 or 4,000 worth of laps in the pool with a 5 count it would really help for on race day when you have to push a little harder than you planned for a while.

When I am in the OW I never really get those anxiuties many get. I've been a strong swimming since my very early youth. I know even if the worst happens, I have masive cramops in both legs or something like that I have full confidence in being able to flip on my back and just float. The one phycological thing I need to work on is when I am swimming OW after a nwhile I will get the feeling that I am not going anywhere. I solve this by looking up every 10 strokes. I hope to be able to work on that to the point where I only look up every 20 strokes. Hard to do that in a pool though.

**************************

Got some strength training in this morning. Also was able to do 30 push-up in one set today. A personal record. (Yes, I know, I'm worthless and weak.) That means I am 1/3 of the way to my goal of being able to do 100 push-ups without stopping. WOOT! for me

Have a great day everyone.

It's a training ride this morning.  I love snow but I am so ready for it to be warm out so I can bike outside.

Hey All,

Just checking in.  Been following the advice I've been given here and have quite successful so far.   I'm down to 230 lbs (245lbs. prior to Christmas).  My Run/Walk/Run is 3min run/2 min walk for 5k now.  And my swim is is down to 56secs/50m.  Still a long way to go but such a long way from where I was (Coach-potato extraordinare).

Interesting news is that my local Y is holding an indoor Try a Tri on April 2nd.  My original intent was to train for a race in September but I think I'll change up my goals and train for this.  I might have been underestimating what I can do when I gave myself 9 months to go from Coach to Tri. I feel so much better now.

My only concern is I  haven't even touched my bike yet.  The weather here in Central Ontario has made it impossible to ride outdoors and I don't have a indoor trainer.  I'm going to start a spin class tomorrow and go from there.

Anyways I've been keeping tabs on the team here and your posts help me keep motivated. Thanks and good job.

TTYL

Well I am finally back. Sorry for my disappearance but know I have been watching. You are all doing great. Several hit the 2XIM challenge. Awesome. FitMark - welcome. Great story. Many of you, and you know who you are, deserve some punishment for your behavior and there will soon be another challenge to address your actions. I agree with all the advice given. I will add for you newer folks. When we talk about races and whether you CAN do the race please understand there is a difference between CAN and ENJOY. In your early days I am going to lean toward ENJOY then ramp it up. That doesn't mean you can't do it. Just means you might have more fun with an alternate. NOW, knowing that, we will support you whatever your choice. And you CAN do it. You just might hurt a bit. And there is nothing wrong with that.

All I am going to say is that Nurses are the best people to socialize with.  Lets face it, they have seen it all.  You can't make a nurse blush, they hear all kinds of foul language, they tell the best stories, many of them can drink more than me, they are use to working all night, and they take care of you when you are sick.

If you want to pick up nurses, make sure you live in an area that gets lots of snow and you have a
4x4 vehicle.  I kind of like these really bad snow storms we have been getting!  Cool

I have 5 of the Spinervals series;

3.0 Sufer-O-Rama: 45 min Interval Workout

4.0 Muscle Breakdown: 45 min Interval session

9.0 Have Mercy: 120 min Race sims, Accerleration sets, Super Spins, ETC...

13.0 Tough Love: 3 hr Interval session

27.0 Threshold Test & Suffer Fest: 60 min workout with 20 min threshold TT test

They are all real good and do what each title says. I have done the interval ones mostly because I try and do my long ride outdoors. I hope to keep adding to my collection to eventually get them all.

***********************************

Mark, Thanks for the list.  I will keep my eyes open.

Glenn, good luck on the Y-tri.

Wanted to report a fun workout I had Tuesday night.  Was traveling and instead of watching a movie at the hotel, headed over to the local gym.  Entered their cardio theater and biked for an hour (22 miles).  The longest I've been on a bike in decades for sure.  Kept the tempo around 90.  It felt great.  Then I ran on the treadmill for another 10 minutes.  Holy cow was that eye opening.  Thought my legs would 'loosen up' but they felt like jello.  After a few minutes, I slowed down to a walk and it was a lot better.  Great news is that I was not sore the next day or the one after that.

Still crawling/working on my swimming.  Attempted this morning to breathe while swimming and had to stay on my side for a few breaths to catch my breath.  Could make it about half a lap before resting.  A huge hit to my ego, thinking I should be able to do this, but not quite there.  I'm learning that swimming is a lot more like golf.  There is a lot of skill required, but I'm confident that I will be able to learn it.  Just gotta remain patient....

When I finished, I watched the others swimming and visualized myself doing the same.  Can't wait until I can do 50m, then 100m, then more, without stopping.

Hey everyone.

I got a pro fit for the first time today. The guy made a lot of changes. Moved the seat forward and up then moved the handlebars back and down, then adjusted the aero-bars to be closer together. He also recommended getting a shorter crank, which I did. To top it off while I was at it I upgraded my lower bracket to a full ceramic one.

Now that I am 100% broke, I am looking forward to Sunday when I will get a chance to see how the bike rides. Hopefully I get some relief from the long duration rides I have been having problem with so far.

Have a great night all.

Hey Everyone!!

Finally went back to school today on a 2 hour delay.  I love 2 hour delays on swim days because I don't have to get out of bed before 5am....I can get up at 7 and swim before school!

Has anyone ever tried a Tabata workout?  I did today on the bike.  It's quick but not painless!!!

Mark- don't be surprised if you have some adaptation pain. Also,a fit is based on a balance of comfort and power. Ie- you can be in a more aggressive position in an Olympic than you might be able to tolerate for an IM ride. After about three or four rides if you haven't adapted, don't hesitate to take it back to the fitter with SPECIFICS about where you are feeling pain and at what duration of riding. Write it down, right after each ride so you don't forget. I am a HUGE fan of fits but you have reaponsibility too. They can adjust what they need to for you to be comfortable too. To show you how different fitters are, during my 2nd fit last year, my seat was raised about 1.25 inches. This was the second fit of my Tri bike with a different fitter. It felt gREAT. Hopefully it is dialed in, if not, take it back with details.

Hey all!
Just swinging by.  This week has been a bit of a cutback week for me.  Just too much going on and next week doesn't look to be any better.  Weather here is turning nicer and hoping for a 5 mile run in the 60's late this afternoon.  Unfortunately this will be our best weather all week as the forecast shows colder temps and rain.

Question for the group:  Been looking at new bikes and like the CD0.1's but I have a chance at a brand new Cervelo P1 for ~$1100 (including fitting, tune-ups etc).  I don't but a lot of stock in the fitting as they don't seem to do much more than a couple of angles and eye you.  So do I save myself a bunch of money and get the P1 or wait and spend more to get a carbon bike.  I am torn between being cheap (hey its a new bike instead of a 13 yr old bike) vs. what I was hoping for.  Think my answer is wait but wanted some input.

I would buy the Cervelo.  The P1 is a very successful frame design.  Take the money you're going to save and enter another race or two this year.  Of course I'm a bit biased. I'm riding the S1 and would not hesitate to buy another Cervelo.

Cheers.
