Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm a big fan of the whirlpool after swims and the steam room after runs. This was a recovery week for me, I have a Blarney Stone 5k run tomorrow, so I moved my schedule around quite a bit, doing both my long run and bike yesterday. Probably not ideal, but they were only 1 hour each and I was still able to put in a solid but not to crazy effort. So, I have the run tomorrow and rest day Sunday, so I'll be ready to work come Monday! The big news is that it has been in the 70's and 80's all week here (and supposed to be like that through the end of March). With a light week, it's been a little hard not getting a lot of B or R time outside, but that's for the next couple of weeks! Oh, and I talked my husband into running the race tomorrow too! Super excited since he is not a runner(soccer & basketball). He ran 3.1 miles for the first time yesterday, so it should be fun!! And Creighton (my alma mater) are playing in the NCAA tourney this weekend, go Jays!! (sorry for the single paragraph, when I do this on my phone, it won't make separate paragraphs!) |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ali - Good luck on the race and on the game. I am an Iowa State alum so I will be watching that game tomorrow. Rain here this weekend so trainer ride tonight while watching the games, swim and run tomorrow, then bike ride Sunday (that may turn into a spin class) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() wannabefaster - 2012-03-15 10:03 AM I do the vast majority of my miles in Saucony Kinvaras and really like them. They are really light weight yet still pretty well cushioned. They have worn quite well for me also. My only comment is that I think my calves sometimes get a little sore from long runs in them which you would expect from a shoe with very minimal drop. I have been able to get them consistently for right around $60. I don't know much about the Minimus except that I think it has less cushioning... I may have to give these a go on my next shoe...still trying to find that perfect shoe. Currently I am running in blade lights, but they don't do too well for me after 8 or 9 miles, but I love the light feel they have and don't want to go back to the heavy bulky shoes. Saucony has always produced great shoes as well. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got my new fit for the season taken care of this week. Lowered seat 2 cm's and widened the front end a bit too. Big change is going from a 53/39 to a 50/34, this will hopefully make the bike leg at IMWI a bit more manageable and produce a better run result as well. Anyone else get a fit done soy far this year? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Luck'O'the'Irish to ya today Ali! went into the LBS yesterday and didn't get the best feeling from the place. They had only road bikes and about three of last years models for about 100 off. Really nice staff but I just wasn't feeling it. Back to surfing kijiji for a used ride. Got to move fast though because the snow is rapidly melting here and spring is in the air! Edited by justinfss 2012-03-17 10:25 AM |

I don't think I will be able to get fit for a bike, this worries me because everyone says the fit is the most important part of biking, is there anyway I can determine what size bike, crank, bars that I need by measuring myself before I buy something used. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BMiller71 - 2012-03-16 9:04 PM I'll be cheering for Iowa State too! Although I've never met Fred Hoiberg(head coach), I'm friends and neighbors with his brother Steve, so we've got to give them some love. Brian, don't be afraid of riding in the rain, it's not so bad! Thanks for all the well wishes on the race, it's always a fun one, and with only swimming yesterday and nothing but a little yard work today, I should be ready for a decent race. :-)Ali - Good luck on the race and on the game. Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ali - That is funny his brother is your neighbor. Fred played at ISU when I was there. He was "The man" then and looks Luke he is now also. I am still not totally confident on the tri bike to ride in the rain. I am still a little twitchy, so that may not be the best combo. Just got in a good swim. Man I suck ay counting laps. I wanted to get in my full distance but can not keep track of the laps. Oh well still felt good. |
|

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always would lose track of laps to, so i bought a ironman timex 150 lap watch, found one on amazon for $40, well worth it. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Matthew, I've seen that video, makes me laugh. I think of it when I'm saying something from it (like last week, "it's a recovery week"). Brian, I have trouble keeping laps straight too! Someone mentioned counting alphabetically, and that helps (I'll think of all the words that start with that letter during the lap). Funny swim story...this week I had a short swim set (4x300, swim, kick, swim, pull). Normally I'll bring my sheet in ziploc, because I'm always forgetting or getting confused, but this was so short, I just wrote it on a post-it. Get to the pool, need a kick board & pull buoy, but then where to put them, 300's break down to 4 - 75's. Ok, a little odd, but I've got my own lane, so I'll just get 2 kick boards & 2 buoys, and put them on each end. Do the 1st 300, wait now I've got 2 sets of toys on the same end, which is not the end they need to be on for the next 300. Ok, I'll just swim down to the other end of the pool and start there. Thinking, come on BT, what kind of messed up workout is this?!? So, when I get home, I look at the sheet again...4x300, 300swim, 300kick, 300swim, 300pull, ahhh! So the 5k went ok. It was pretty crowded and hot (83-crazy for this time of year) and windy, all run on a ped./bike path, part of which is a suspension bridge over the Missouri river (such an odd sensation running on it when it moves occasionally). When I realized with the crowd, no PR's where going to happen, I just sat back and enjoyed the run. The best part was my husband finished in about 34 min (11 min miles) with a smile, AND wants to do another so he can improve his time. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I usually add extra laps to make sure, thought porcess behind that being that it is better for me in the long run to swim one extra than one fewer. First Bike commute to work today here and it was Glorious! 22 degrees and sunny with light winds. Really glad I have been doing spin class lately, legs felt really good and I was putting out a lot more power than I do normally in the season. Getting up to 35-40kmh on the flat sections was encouraging too!! |

You can use measurements off your body, but that really only helps define the frame size that you need. After that the measurements, though still important, become more of an after thought and it boils more down to how your body fits on the bike. Your 3 contact points (feet, butt, hands) are what you need to focus on. Some fitters start with the feet and work their way up, others start with the butt, etc. You can fit yourself, but it can be hard and time consuming to find that "sweet spot". I did my own fit last year and it worked for me, however, I probably could have had a better fit by going into the shop instead, I just decided not to. You can learn A LOT by doing a simple google search, just don't do what others do and snag a pic of a pro and try to emulate their fit. Some things to consider from what you mentioned Frame is mostly decided by your body measurements Handlebars should be about 1 inch shorter then the width of your shoulders Cranks are more based off riding ability, the smaller the crank length the lower your seat should be Saddles are entirely base off preference Stems I do not know enough about, but I do know that you should have some bend in your elbows, not much but some to absorb the road vibrations Comfort trumps aero the further the distance you plan to ride Angles are a huge factor in fit, hip angle and knees are important to avoid injury and soreness This is all I can muster right now so I am going to bed, I'll post more info on fitting this week, and I'll report back what we do with my fit when I change my cranks out. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sweet, thanks Ben, that is what I am looking for now, just making sure I get the right frame size. I am pretty sure I am 56cm. I am 5ft 11 1/2in, with a 31-32 in inseam. Trying to get the best value I can for around 1500. |

Seriously, the weather we have been having is a gift! It's been 70's-80's here all week with no end in sight. We did have 3 days of rain, which even after telling Brian to ride in the rain, I biked inside, but did do my 13.1 mile long run in the rain. I have to say training this week has been GREAT! Last week was a recovery week, and it was hard to cut back, but I think my body needed it. This week was the start of the 'focus' weeks. It was supposed to be the swim, but I'm going out of town this weekend with some girlfriends (yay! ![]() ![]() |

Cold and raininy here in the north, long run scheduled for tomorrow, trying to overcome numbness in feet by balancing on golf balls... Anyone tried this method before? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Still alive. Just got in from a 22 miler. My mojo is seriously lacking but the will power keeps driving me. It was pretty amazing to do the whole run in a t shirt and shorts in March. Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Happy Spring. (It is Spring now, isn't it?) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It is spring now, I know that because I lost a bet about which day spring started... March 20 in case your wondering. Great job on the 22 miles! I am going to try for 8is today |
