something else that will help with the swimming is doing shorter sets of say 75 to 150yards, something like 5-10 x100, or a ladder of 50, 75, 100, etc, with a shorter rest. this will build the longer distance speed but give you just enough of a break to not have the stroke fall apart.

Thanks for the ideas folks.  I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts on the swim mp3 player.  I'm going to try shorter faster sets tonight and see how that feels.

Kelly, I too have found almost all bike stores to have poor customer service.  They tend to range from outride rude to dismissive.  I've never found a good one.  The trouble tends to be that only knowledgeable people are employed, and their knowleged tends to give them an attitude of superiority.  That's the way I've seen it anyway.  Hope you find something better.

Neal, great job on the workouts and the breakthrough swim.

Malcolm, hang in there with the boredom.  I am not sure if your just bored with swimming or the whole thing.  One postive thing to triathlon, is that people have 3 disciplines to help ease the likelyhood of boredom.  Sometimes I/we get caught up in "needing" to improve.  We don't really need to get faster so much as we just need to maintain a healthy mind, body, and family/job balance.  If we get that right, that is the most important.

David, hope to see you at the race.  I think my workouts have slacked some in the past three weeks, so maybe, just maybe, I will run faster tomorrow.  It is what it is though, so we'll se.

Everyone, thanks for the well wishes with my 5K tomorrow.  I feel not particular anxiousness over having to do well.  I'll just do me best, see what it is, and go from there.

The way you've been running lately - that 5k will be over before you're even warmed up!  I hope you've taken a day or two off this week!! Good Luck!

I'm actually going to do a 10K at the end of the month.  Not going to train for it - just going to go do it...as part of normal training.  10K is a VERY long run for me... but I was peer pressured into it...and...what can I say... I'm weak like that.   I plan on peppering 5k's throughout this spring.  Should be fun.

Regarding being bored with Tri - no - not really - I think I just need to sign up for something in the spring, that will help. I think just getting my first tri under my belt will be a huge motivator.  Right now the first event seems so far away.

I went to a different bike store last night.  Very helpful, but  limited on selection.  Only one pair of shoes in my price range.  They were Lake- never heard of them has anyone?  They had three velcro straps.  How is that for the swim to bike transition?  He showed me two kind of pedals - the one road and one more for mountain biking.  He said he used the mountain biking ones even though he rides mostly road.  I personally like the looks of the road pedals better.  The helmets he showed me were $65  & $110.  Of course the 110 one felt better.  I've never ridden with a helmet.  Is it worth the extra money?   I didn't buy anything yet. He was willing to knock 20% off the shoes if I bought the shoes and pedals together.

I swam today for the first time since last Saturday.  I could barely do a 50.  Pushed myself at the end to do a 300.  My neck is jammed up right now so breathing wasn't the easies thing to do.  Hoping to be lossened up by Sunday's swim class.

Have a great weekend.

Good luck on the purchases.  I did not buy any of those items online, but I bet you'll find some savings.

You swim experience reminds me why I don't even care to get good at it.  I want to get good at swimming about as bad as any triathlete wants to get good at tennis I would suppose.

My next two runs are 10K's.

I don't think I've ran a 10k distance - just for running's sake since I was in the Navy...which was...a good 12 years ago! Should be interesting.

I mean these are my next two running races. But for training, I've run a lot of runs farther than 10K since duathlon training began.  Until then (2007) I had NEVER ran 6 miles or more.

Unfortunately - Judging by the swelling of my knee...I probably won't be running at all this week.   I'm totally pissed!  I guess it's a good thing I 've been getting PT for my biceps brachialis and shoulder - she can evaluate my knee tomorrow and I won't have to wait.  It's the exact same injury I had during football season last year - lasted a couple of weeks...but then I was up and cutting again.  I'm worried that I'm getting more and more susceptible to this injury...and eventually I'll really blow it out...with one good plant and cut.  I'll discuss that wit the PT tomorrow.  Right now I'm just hoping that it'll heal in a week...

So - This leads to a good question.  What do you guys do to maintain some semblance of cardio conditioning while waiting for an injury to heal...in this case the knee.

WOW- I have been out of the loop for way too long! I will try not to get off track again. But I do have a somewhat ligit excuse- I have made the leap and will be leaving the corporate world (where my job is on the rocks anyhow) and going to grad school. I got into the Masters program at Stanford! Woo hoo!

Ok, so I have been training though. My only problem is snowboarding tends to take over many weekends but I am couting that as "strength training."

Anyway- I have been setting goals for myself, and sticking to them decently. But they are much lower than many other people on the site. My first tri is a mt. bike sprint, so I don't have too much mileage to do. My weekly goals are: 2 hours strength training, 1000 yds swim, 15 mile bike, and 6 miles run. My tri is about half those distances so that should be ok, right?

Good job to everyone setting/hitting goals. I will try to be more consistant!

Sorry to hear about the knee.  No clue on cardio without the legs.  Maybe swimming with a bouy between you legs to not kick.

Congrats on getting into Stanford.  What's your major?  I count snowboarding too.  That's all I'll probably doing on Spring Break so I hope it keeps me in shape.

Wow!! What a beautiful day.  We hit the 60 mark today.  I ran a little more than 5 miles.  I felt sluggish, but it was just great to be out in a t-shirt.  Lake Michigan was as smooth as glass.  There were a couple of kyakers paddling.  Slowed down a little bit just to take it all in.

Hope everyone else that has been couped up all winter has been out the last couple of days.  Happy Spring like weather to everyone.Cool

hey all, sorry for the long time away, looks like you guys have been at it while i have been gone though!

been battling a nasty cold/flu, finally getting over it.

YES a helmet is needed, you should never, ever ride a bike without one. most people newer to cycling as this, but almost every single accident with a head injury happens when the person is riding under 10mph and often on sidewalks, driveways, etc.

look online for Bells helmets and look at their lineup.

Thomas sorry i missed the 5k, i ended up having a friend here this weekend and we setup and ran a short TT that we each did, had a decent split for being sick, held right on 28mph for just over 7 miles on a rolling course:-)

hope everyone is well.

Good 7.2M TT.  I wonder how far I could get in about 15 minutes of all out pain.  Probably not 7.2M, although the shorter the course the better i'm going to be (do to my size and overall conditioning).

I'm actually afraid I'll be slower on the bike this year.

X2 David on the great time trial.

I managed 5 flat miles in about 11 minutes yesterday during part of my ride.  That was with a nice stiff 20mph tailwind though

Thomas your speed was there it was just frozen.  28 degrees is too cold for me.  I wouldn't have even ran.

Hope you're feeling better David.

My pedals are being put on my bike today.  I hope I don't crash and burn.

I'm sure you'll get used to the pedals in no time.  Although I almost had an incident when I caught myself daydreaming coming up on a stoplight yesterday   I'll chalk it up to it being early in the season still

I practiced getting in and out of my pedals on my trainer.  They are  a bit stiff.  They adjusted the tension quite low.  Getting in seems to be easier than getting out.  I'm waiting for my helmet to get here before I hit the road with it.

What's the update on the knee, Malcom?

Smile tomorrow is Friday!Smile

good to hear about the pedals. it takes a bit of getting used to but once you are comfortable with them, it becomes 2nd nature, just like learning to ride the bike.

malcom, hope the knee is feeling better.

Ran a 5k this morning.  Well, sort of a 5k.  The course was long at about 3.8 miles according to the garmin.  Not a real organized race and they didn't really map out the mileage before hand.  But if I trust my watch I PR'd the first 5k with a sub 20' time.  I treated the additional mileage as a cool down.
