^^^That's pretty much the technique for sighting.  Unfortunately, like Stuart mentioned, by lifting your head your lower body sinks creating more drag.  To compensate, I find myself kicking harder to elevate and keep forward propulsion.  The process can be quite fatiquing.  As such, I've been trying to incorporate the sight breath at my every fourth breath stroke on my strong side. ^^

Don't really know what I was thinking at the time, but I signed up for an ultra endurance off-road cycle race in September.  Now that it is official, I'm starting to feel apphrensive.  The race is 100 miles with 17,000 ft elevation gain and a 14 hour time limit.  Oh well, too late now.....

Here's the link, if anyone is interested in checking it out:

That race looks incredible!  I wouldn't even know how to train for something like that.  Good luck!

race went pretty good for me - was hoping to be faster (obviously), but with the temperature and how i was feeling pre race, i think it went well.  2:20:xx (Olympic, 1 mile swim, 40k bike, 10k run), 23/230ish overall, 2nd in AG.  really beautiful area - lake chelan is over 1000 ft deep in places and is crystal clear - the only reason you can't see 30-40 feet deep is because it gets dark!

Well done, Mike.  Sounds like a good race for you.  What were the temps of the air and water?

Happy to report that I had an MRI today and there's no structural damage showing.  Don't know why I'm having so much pain and instability in the knee, but that was enough to get me out there training today.  I can't sit anymore!  Did a very gentle 30 minutes and iced afterwards.  We'll see how it is tomorrow on the bike and in the pool.

Solid work Mike!  I could only wish for temps like that around here right now.  Summer has finally reached us and it is HOT!

My race was great. It was a perfect day and I had so much fun - im totally hooked and want to do another one soon.

The race was a sprint 820M/16.1M/3.2M. I got stronger and more confident as the race went along.  I was about 350/700 in the swim, 150/700 in the bike and 13/700 in the run.  My overall time was 1:28:44 which put me 96th. I cant wait to get back to work in the water and on the bike.

Thanks for everyone who gave me advice - it helped my confidence so much. I wasnt even ready to sign up for a Tri until I spent some time browsing these forums.

Tried a new running workout today.  Has anyone done Yasso 800s?  I've been mainly using three components: tempo, speed, and endurance with some variations.  But, was reading some articles on Runners World, and discovered this workout.  It was pretty hard.  I think I will maintain at 4 repeats for a few weeks then increase before my next race.

Things are good.  Training has been rough with hot temps.  Couple of races coming up in August and September for me.

How'd everyone do with their month's training?  I fell a little short on the bike and swim totals.  It was a tough month for me.  Had a few days were I wasn't feeling well after working out.  Not to mention, we had some hot temps here in Northern California.  On a positive note, my OWS skills seem to be improving.  I've now dedicated one day a week to open water practice.

Hope all is well!

sounds like my month . . skipped a few key workouts, as well as just some base work. . . and also skipped some workouts due to heat. last week we hit 106, which is unheard of up in these parts.  great job on the OWS, it is fun

Hi everyone.  Sorry I've been out of the loop for so long.  After much debate, the report on my knee is not good and I'm due to see a sports specialist about having it scoped.  Two problems - osteoarthritis under the kneecap and a medial meniscus tear that they can't really see on the MRI, but think it's a good chance it will show up in surgery.

So...no triathlon for me this year.  But, with surgery and some therapy, they think I'll be back out there in the pack by the end of the year.  Best of luck to all of you for the rest of the season and thanks for the help and mentoring that got me this far.  I know this is going to be one of my sports.  Let me get healthy and I'll see you on BT in the future.

Laura, that sucks about your knee

I am back!  From outer space!  My parents left for Scotland yesterday so everything is back to normal again, although I feel I need a vacation now. LOL.

Anyone got any big races coming up? I feel out of the loop at  at the moment! And Mike is right when he's talking about 106 temps. It hit 110 where I work! Urgh!  But it means the lakes here are sooooo warm!!!!!  It's great.

yeah, the lakes are too warm! i don't like 75+ F water, it isn't very refreshing!!

i am doing lake stevens next weekend -- hoping the water temp is in the low 70's so i can wear a wetsuit and not overheat, we will see!

Mike - do you mind if I hang out here and watch the discussion as the group gets through the race season?  I'm learning a lot from all of you and I hope to be back in training by late fall.  At least I hope to be able to do something.  Right now, I can't even swim because full extension of my leg aggravates the meniscus.  It bites!

Yeah, isn't that frustrating.  My next race is back in Tahoe, so I've been wanting to practice my OWS in my suit.  But, with the warmer water and temps down here at sea level, I feel like I'm actually sweating while swimming.  I can't get to the lake any earlier either.  Oh well, just another obstacle!  haha.

Does anyone here do the challenges?  I'm doing the 4 is more August challenge.  My training lapsed big time in July but now I'm getting on track for my Oly in Sept.  I am determined to get rid of my gut by then!

Anyone racing this weekend?   I have my 3rd and final 2.4 mile swim tomorrow. I am totally looking forward to it
