About a foot of snow and calling for ice tonight. Did get a 4 mile run in but felt terrible. Did not eat well this weekend (like a king every meal) back at it today probably cross training today and that's about all.

Just completed small panic attack. Looked at my training log and saw a green day on it. Wasn't sure what it was, then I figured it out. Yikes.

Still have to buy my tri outfit and book my hotel for my first two days in AZ.

When does tri clothing typically go on sale? Looks like most of the sales are winding down. Is it pretty much a winter thing, like bikes? I'm thinking I'll just have to suck it up and pay near full price.

Green!  That means race day is getting close!

As far as sales I'm guessing your best bet is fall and winter.  It seems like stores will probably start getting this year's stuff in soon.

sadly tri clothing is one of those things that doesn't have much of an "off season sale." The local tri shop has some old stock on sale every now and then, but as far as having an end of season sale, I've never seen one.

Nice bike . . . how did you even know where to start?

I am thinking of maybe buying a bike next year or the year after, but I wouldn't have a clue.  I know which bikes look awesome and which have awesome color schemes (come on, it matters Laughing).  Do bike shops allow you to jump on and do 20-30 miles?  I mean how would you know if you body likes the bike if you don't ride it for several miles.  Some bike are far more aggressive in the angle to the aero bars.

30min TT tonight... first "fast" ride on the Planet X... feel like I smoked it. Did a LT Power test (why not since I'm already TT'ing) and ended up 20watts higher than my fully rested one on Jan.9, just breaking 200w average. I know, pretty pathetic, but for my 150lbs, it's a start!!

Lots of time messing up and trying to fix my S32 is where I gained most of my Wrenching skills.

The LBS near me knows me pretty well, and they don't mind helping out / letting me ride. I bought the PX online though (ST deal) but...with my LBS knowledge (they couldn't beat the price and admitted it) but I used them to help me pick the size (stack/reach) and of course to fit it. I'll probably end up taking it and letting them check over it as well, as this is my first build up from the ground.

The thing about seat angle is, most tri bikes are pretty aggressive (75+ degrees) and from that point, almost any saddle shoved forward will get you to 80+ if you were to need it (most people don't) so I wasn't all that worried that the PX was 76 and not 78, even though I ride pretty steep. Talk to your local fitter about how you plan to ride.

Like anything that involves social interaction, BUILD RAPPORT with your LBS.  That is extremely important in many ways.

Traveling always wreaks havoc on the nutrition.  I can't tell you how jealous I am that your heading to some nice weather.  Sounds like good timing too

Yep. Nutrition is going to be an issue for sure.   Already started thinking about a cheseburger at Margaretaville.  The king going to eat some, but  I'm going to try to keep close to the plan.   I suspect the best I can hope for is not to gain any lbs.

Weather forcast is only OK, but at this point low 70s looks good to me, but our freinds from KW say thats freezing.

Quick question I often see 100 pull 100 kick etc. in swim workouts what exactly is that?

100 pull  - 100 yards=2 laps=4 lengths using a pull buoy (the dog bone between your legs).  This is made to strengthen your arms and back, but can stress them if your body is not ready for this kind of work, or you are not warmed up

100 kick - 100 yards=2 laps=4 lengths either using a kick board w/ your head above water, or without a kickboard, you hands in front of you and your head under water.  This is basially to build stronger swim legs

Does that help?  What other questions do you have?

Good for you!  A lot of IMOO participants swear by this as training, but I, myself did not sign up.  Enjoy yourself!!

Hi guys!  I apologize for being a little quiet lately.  Work took away my BT privelages during the day.  I just wanted to check in and see how everyone's training was going.  Just a few short months until those early spring races.

I started my 32 week plan for IMWI and the step up in volume resulted in a good ol fashioned cold (I'm writing this from the couch where I've be watching movies and attempting to nap since 3).  It didn't help I worked a 50+ hour week too.

I just want to encourage everyone to check in and share how their particular training is going.  Me, I ran 3 straight miles the other day, the longest consecutive run since the hip injury in November.  It went so well I'm beginning to believe that this season won't be entirely lost.  I've got 5 on tap for tomorrow, which will include some walk breaks, but should be telling nonetheless.

Sorry to hear about the cold Neal, but it sounds as if all is not lost.  Good on you.

I've been fairly consistent in my training and am making good progress on the bike.  I recently signed up for the See Jane Run half in Alameda, Ca in June--cost big bucks (I guess it was the champagne and chocolate at the finish line that made it so pricey).  I joined a womens tri club here, and made some connections to get my swim training going.  Now it's just a matter of working out the logistics.  I'm toying with signing up for my first sprint tri in summer for extra incentive.

I am worried I'm going to lose a lot of momentum though over the next three to four weeks.  My marathon work travel kicks off next week with several days in Burbank CA.  The following week I'm in several places in Northern CA, and after that, three solid days in San Francisco.  I know I can squeeze my runs in on hotel treadmills worse case scenario.  And if I can get out this weekend to buy a swimsuit, I might even try out a few hotel pools.  But the bike?  That's going to be tough.  And I just learned that the tri club is riding a group event in early March that I would really like to participate in.  Just not sure if I would be ready to go the distance.  We'll see.

I'm a couple of weeks into my 1/2 IM program, planning on entering the Rev3 in Knoxville (Oly or 1/2, not sure yet) as an A- to B race (Cedar Point still being A)

Finally lost my toenail that was giving me some grief (especially in the pool) so training is back to Full Speed Ahead.  2 hour ride today (edurance ride) and an Hour run yesterday... so I feel I'm taking steps in the right way. Back to the fitters one day this week to put the finishing touches on the Planet X. Also trying to move my diet to Gluten free... only a couple of days into it and I think it is making a difference. We'll just have to wait and see.

Hey,

Thanks for checking up on me.  Worked tons last week and this week might not be much better, so training sucks, but got in a good ride today.

Shin splints seem to be ok - not perfect.  Ran yesterday after a week and a half off and shin splints were ok, but HR sure did spike quickly.

I thought all my leg pain was due to my shin splints, but I think I have a big knot or something in the inside of my upper calf muscle.  That seems to be what caused me to stop running last week.  When I roll it or got a massage at therapy, it actually bruised.  It is very sore right now so hard to roll.  Anyone run into a knot causing a stoppage in training?

Just how cold is 59 degree water temp? Just checked out the Mission Bay bouy and it is at 59.4 right now and has been around 59 for the last few days. The temps in SD don't look like they'll be above 65 in the tem day forecast. So, shouldn't warm too much.

I googled comfortable swim temperatures and found this:
At 60 degrees F you have about a 2 hour safe zone.  After that your
expectancy of unconsciousness and death by drowning increases to 50%.

Should I expect to be super farggin cold, even in a wetsuit? Does it make sense to get, like, huge goggles (like they have on scuba gear) to try to protect parts of my face?

Here's a small excerpt from a race I did back in July 2008.  The race was the Spirit of Racine 1/2 HIM and the swim is in Lake Michigan.

"The water temp at start was around 55 - 56 degrees F. I waded in and out of the water during the trek down to the start, to see how it would feel. Yep, feet became cold quickly. I winced. I thought, "well, I came here to race, so no backing out. HTFU, DTFU, and find some fun out of this!". So, no matter what anyone tells you, wearing a wetsuit in 55 degrees F water is still COLD! "

I'm a very skinny guy, and wore a full wetsuit, a polypropylene cap and the provided swim cap, and a full swim mask (not goggles).  IT. WAS. COLD!!

Time for some updates.
I have travelled to Sweden for a week. It took me two days to get here because of all the snow on the US east cost. Here we have about 3 feet of snow and it is about 0F so no running outside. Swimming is still improving litte by little but I have a long way to go. I need to improve a little before I sign up to my first race, maybe when I can swim 250m without rest.

Last two weeks of training have gone very well. This week started off kinda shaky. Had bad hngover from pub run yesterday. So, only got a swim in. Have a date tonight. So, another day off. It'll make for a busy second halfof the week, but after that i get a nice recovery week in before my first race. As I noted I am scared stiff of that water temp now. First OWS and it'll be in frozen water. After first race, I pick training up for two more weeks before I go into taper before my first 'real' race.

Still not sure what my plans are after that. I am so darn slow on the bike. Not sure how much of that is real and how much is riding on the trainer, but I haven't really gotten faster at all in a while.
