givemashot - 2010-03-05 8:34 AM Well, well, well. I've never done a quadruple post before. I think I just earned a nap from all that hard work! It would go well with the inches of new snow on the ground, plus the stuff that's still falling. Tell me again why I left 75* and sunny Phoenix? Ok, I have to get going--coffee is made, I have an appointment in an hour, shower time that needs to be squeezed in before I leave. Later Gouhls!

That was monumental Amy. According to Pluschenko's rules you should get the posting Gold Medal today, since you pulled the quad and Billiam could only manage a triple

ceilidh - 2010-03-05 9:54 AM Hi Melindy. I am SURE you are WAY faster than you estimate. I was thinking of getting a garmin. but I decided to save money. I just use my cheapo timex heart monitor watch with timer. It is adequate for my needs

All I've got is a 50 Lap memory Timex that I just bought last week. Until then I had to use my iPod in stopwatch mode or my cell phone! I've thought about getting a HRM, but I'm not too worried about it at this point.

disturbed275 - 2010-03-05 4:08 AM So I am debating whether to do my long run today or tomorrow as scheduled.  Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy, windy, and barely above freezing.  Today the temp will be the same, a little less wind, and sunny.  I usually don't mind running in the rain, but combined with the cold I can't imagine it being fun.

So do I switch or suck it up?

If it were me, I'd switch it up as long as I was feeling healthy. Cold, wind, or rain by themselves aren't bad but that's a trifecta of suck when you put them together. Since you just had a run yesterday maybe you should shorten it or slow it down slightly as a precaution.

For some sick reason that made me snort!

Hopefully in a good way

Morning Bill!

Just finishing lunch you coaster you

How is San Diego treating you (my Ron voice from the Will Farrell movie!)

Just trying to stay classy. There's actually some crap going on today which is threatening to mess with my planned bike ride over lunch. I'll be pissed if I miss it, but we'll see.

I have a Timex HR and Garmin HR and I very seldom use either of them.  I will monitor it at the end to see an avg but try not to even see what it says during the run.  I try to run by knowing how I feel but not needing a monitor tell me how I should be feeling.

My thoughts exactly. I just go off of how hard I'm breathing. If I can maintain a "4 steps in, 4 steps out" breathing pattern, I know I'm going at a comfortable pace. If I'm at "2 in, 2 out" then I'm close to my max effort. Not very scientific, but it seems to work ok so far.

Je suis le tired. School is a little crazy with a final next week. Currently writing up a patient history and physical for my clinical preceptor. Ahhhhhhhh documentation...

Have a swim meet next weekend. 50fly, 50bk, 200free, 200IM and 50brst. And Med Formal next weekend...Ya, I have to get ready at the pool...haha...

Have a 20km run to do tomorrow...I'm gonna get an audiobook to amuse me I think...

Pretty close to buying a bike box...I'm too afraid for the life of my bike to cardboard box it...and a few people who have similarly expensive bikes have said to just get one to protect my investment..haha

How is it going with you Bill/ everyone else....!? I haven't had much tiem to peruse in the past few...

Ann--Sucky job stuff ...I quit my job last summer due to a similar problem...I just couldn't take it anymore. Mind you, mine was just a summer job so not such a big deal in comparison to yours. Good luck in the hunt!

My life story Tom - and I totally agree with you on the breathing pattern.

Sometimes science is overrated - just look at the other posts in some threads!

Honestly I try to avoid threads about HR trainine, zones, LT and all that other stuff. It gives me a headache. I admit to being a dataholic, but I prefer data I can "see" like distance and time. The other stuff is just a means to that end. Maybe if I ever get to the point where I could realistically qualify for something huge like Boston or Kona then we'll see. Until then, I'll just keep plugging along.

Do you guys/gals were y our blues or do you have to dress up?  Is this so you learn how to act like a doctor outside of the classroom?

Dress up..my dress isn't "formal-formal" but I couldn't justify spending more than 150$ on this dress when I have tri things to get still! And I'm not dragging a full length gown to the pool...and it just seems like too much for a formal in 1st year...I will go all out when I graduate...but until then? I'll wait to see if there is some spectacular deal on a gown...maybe at the end of grad season? haha...,then I'll have a dress for next year!

Yes...I assume this is where we learn to socialise as a "doctor" outside of the classroom...which isn't any different to how I socialise at any other formal event...I dunno...Its basically just an excuse to dress up and go to a fancy dinner..and I have been a social recluse as of late and feel I should go to go...haha

Nah, we're not afraid of you guys!
Tom, is there a better type of pepper spray out there? speaking of shopping...

Good question Robin. The best place to look would probably be a local gun store or anywhere they teach advanced self-defense classes. There are two kinds of sprays - fog, which is better for close range, and jet, which is good for longer range. I'd probably recommend fog for self defense since accuracy isn't as much of an issue.

One thing you want to look out for if the "strength" of the spray. The key measure you're looking for is percentage of active "capsaicinoids." You're looking for a concentration of at least 2% (more is better, but harder to find as you go up). It doesn't sound like much, but it can be quite effective.

Again, if you can swing it I recommend getting two cans and using one to practice. If you do buy a spray at a gun store it's worth asking the staff how to use it. Most likely they'd be more than happy to give you some training on it's use. Another thing to consider is that if you ever did have to use it, some of the spray WILL get on you as well. It's best to know what to expect, so I recommend dabbing some on your face below your eyes to get a feel for it. It sucks, but it's important to be able to fight through the discomfort.

Lastly it's important to remember that pepper spray isn't like a gun - it won't stop a bad guy in his tracks or greatly incapacitate him for a long time. It's meant to briefly disorient an attacker and cause them discomfort so you can get the hell out of Dodge. Used well it will definitely do that, but you need to know how to use it.
