brick94513 - 2010-04-19 4:12 PM Looks like people are training!  I like it!

I got a quick session of hill work on the tradmill this morning.  It was tough.  My legs were a little sore from yesterday's ride.

Anyone have anything planned for the weekend?  I'm going to pass on the trip to Vegas for the XTERRA.  I just don't feel like traveling and my son has his second tryout for baseball all-stars.  I might sign up for a 1 mile OWS competition just for the training.

I am racing in my first outdoor triathlon - Lonestar in Galveston, TX this weekend. Doing the sprint. I'm super excited and a lot nervous! It's all new to me, so it'll be a learning experience as much as a racing experience.

dhopman - 2010-04-20 2:27 PM It looks like I'm a little late trying to join a group...but "closed for now" left a little room for negotiation I hope. =)

I'm Dave - 28 years old in California (Silicon Valley), did a couple triathlons in 2006 then took a break from the sport while getting my masters. Now I'm getting back into it, training for my first HIM. I come from a swimming/water polo background so I have some experience to offer to the group in that respect. I'm mostly looking for motivation and training ideas from the group.

If the group remains closed, I understand but if there's room to squeeze one more in, let me know! Thanks all.

Dave, welcome!  Where are you in "Silicaon Valley?"  I live in Brentwood and work in Santa Cruz.

What races are you planning on doing this year?  Which HIM?

Looking to invest in some various equipment and would like some opinions on your favorites/what you use for the following:

Tri shorts OR Tri suit
Heart rate monitor
Wet suit (one piece or two + brand)

shorts/suit - do you have somewhere to go and try the different items on?  i thought i would dig the suit, but i didnt.  plus, how do you take a leak in that thing????

HRM - i love using mine.  Very useful for 'zone' training.   Garmin 305 is extremely versatile and expandable.

wetsuit - if youre racing in open water, why WOULDNT you want a suit?  if not, i dont know if theres a real big benefit if youre not looking at a podium finish.  i bought an xterra 1-piece and w/ only seeing some older suits that our team captain wears here, have no other basis for comparison.  i used it in the pool once, but it was definitely warm and made me float like a caddyshack turd.  2 piece might be easier to get out of if youre concerned about T1 time.

Physically - I feel ready. Prepared? Hope so.

Here's a quick list of equipment for race day:

Tri top/bottom
Wetsuit
2 pairs of goggles (one for sunny day, one for cloudy day)
Super Glide
Bike (haha) - saddle bag stocked with an extra tube, CO2, multitool.
Tire pump
Helmet
Sunglasses
Riding gloves
Cycling shoes
Running shoes
Tape for gimp left leg
Sunscreen
Running Visor
Bib belt (in case they don't have safety pins)
2 Gu's

T1: Have cycling shoes open, socks rolled out with baby powder in them, bike - inspected, tires aired, gears set properly, water bottle already mounted, helmet upside down with sunglasses in it. Strip wetsuit, quick dry off, apply sunscreen, pin number to front of shorts, shoes on, riding gloves on, helmet on, sunglasses on, quick drink of water, then off on the bike. Hydrate at miles 6 and 11.

T2: Helmet off, cycling shoes off, change socks if needed, running shoes on, quick comb through hair (for finish line pics - a girl's gotta look good), suck a Gu, sun visor on, and then off for the run

Maybe hydrate a little halfway through 5k?

How does that sound for a equipment/transition/race plan?

I got myself a tough dilema:

So I went out last month and bought a Cervelo P3.  Before the shop got the bike my wife surprised me and upgraded it to a P4.  I REALLY like the P4 asthetically and love the SRAM components.  Yesterday, I found out there is a possibility the P4 won't be available for me till August!!!  So I'm thinking this bike will be a year old by the time I get it.  Plus, 2 months after I get it I'm sure the price will job or you'll find clearance deals if it's available.

So....WTH do I do?  Do I wait for the P4?  Or do I get a P3 and maybe a nice set of wheels to go with it?  Or just have $$$ left over to build my MTB race bike?

Looking to invest in some various equipment and would like some opinions on your favorites/what you use for the following:

Tri shorts OR Tri suit
Heart rate monitor
Wet suit (one piece or two + brand)

my $.02...

I bought a pair of tri shorts and a tri top, and wore that in my first tri.  It worked fine, however I'm a little overweight in the midsection, and the shirt sorta rode up a bit exposing my belly.  No big deal, but it looked a bit silly in some photo's.  I bought a one piece tri suit before my second tri (on bonktown.com which if you haven't been to before, I'm sorry for introducing you to it Money mouth  and liked it too.  It holds me in a little better and is very comfortable.

A two piece is easier to go to the bathroom with, but I find I can easily just pull the elastic of a leg hole up and pee out the leg opening.  #2 requires pulling the top down, but if that's happening during a race I've got bigger issues going on...

I really like the one piece, it just feels better and stays fit better, I plan to stick with it for all racing.  My tri shorts are now just in rotation as regular bike shorts for training.

HRM:  no expert, but I did have one a while ago that only did 'real time' HR measuring, I couldn't take lap times or get averages or anything.  I now have the Garmin 305 which does waaay more than I know what to do with.  I really like being able to see my HR and lap times (I have it set to click off a split on every mile automatically).  I did go through the brutal (for me) field test to determine my running lactate threshold, and use that to set up my zones, and often use HR to guide my pace on a long run.  I have a tendancy to go out too hard and run at a higher intensity than is recommended, so especially on my weekly 'long run' I'll use the HRM to monitor my effort and make sure I'm staying down in Zone 2.

wetsuit:  No real hellp here, other than to say I've got a sleeveless one piece suit and LOVE IT!  I'm a crappy swimmer though, so I basically just like it because it floats my body and allows me to swim faster (like 15 seconds/100 faster!).

shmeeg - 2010-04-21 9:06 AM what benefit does the p4 provide that the p3 doesnt?  If that benefit isnt worth the wait, go w/ the p3.

Upgrades from P3

Even better aerodynamics - Integrated brake, ICS2, dropped downtube, new seatstays, and integrated water bottle/storage unit (see below).

Integrated Water Bottle- The bottom bracket area is designed to accept a Cervelo water bottle without disrupting the airflow at all. For the few UCI races for which this Cervélo solution is considered too fast, the standard Elite aero bottle fits neatly in the same space.

Feature-Benefit-Experience

The bike industry loves to talk about features (tube shapes, materials, etc). But a feature is useless without a benefit! Ask yourself, would you prefer a poorly engineered frame made of “Ultra High Modulus carbon” (a feature)? Or an intelligently engineered frame that uses the material to create something lighter, stiffer and stronger (real benefits)? Even more than benefits, you want experiences. The aforementioned lightness & stiffness may be benefits, but what you really want is the experience of higher performance, through quicker acceleration and better climbing.

This is why Cervelo lists not only features, but also the accompanying benefits and experiences.

To recap:

Product Feature: “Which innovative shape, material or design solution was used on this frame?”

Technical Benefit: “What is the advantage of this shape, material or solution?”

Rider Experience: “How does this feature & benefit change my riding experience?” This usually involves experiencing higher performance or more comfort. Some features also offer an esthetic experience, and although we would never sacrifice performance or comfort for beauty, sometimes you can have it all.

couple of thoughts.

I'd skip the sunscreen.  Do it before the swim, you'll be fine for the sprint distance, no need to waste time in T1 doing it.

Get a race belt.  Not required, but I can't imagine trying to pin on a number in T1.  You'll be wet, nervous, excited and in a rush!  Race belts are cheap, you snap the number onto it before the race, then you just snap it around your waist during transition.  I got one that has a little pocket in it so I can even stash a gel in there 'just in case'.

Do you really need gloves?  I'd imagine them to also be difficult to put on over wet hands.

that's all I got, HAVE FUN!!

Couple quick suggestions.

Use the number bib belt.  You don't want to be messing with pins.

Do you need the gloves?  I usually avoid them while racing.  Just extra stuff to don and remove.

Hydrate on the bike, not in transition.  Remember, this is the fourth discipline of triathlons.  You want to be in-and-out of there.

Also, same thing for the return to T2.  Consume the gel during at the end of the ride, finish hydrating, and give your quads a little break before transition by using your hamstrings to pedal the last few hundred yards.

Norcal and Brick (and everyone else who gave suggestions):

Going to use the race belt, no cycling gloves, sunscreen prior to swim, Gu and hydrate while on the bike. Thanks for the suggestions. Will do. And I'm going to try and have FUN throughout the entire experience! I have to say it's kind of hard to imagine having fun since I'm already nervous as heck, but I will make a conscious effort to remember why I'm there, and that is indeed to have fun. Woohoo!

Oh, and I've got dinner dates set with a couple of BTers. It's going to be a blast. Just being near the ocean, even if it is just the Gulf, is always fun for this landlocked girl.  Plan on taking lots of pics!

Leaving now for my trip down to Galveston. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

Curt ... Looking to invest in some various equipment and would like some opinions on your favorites/what you use for the following:

Tri shorts OR Tri suit

I prefer a top and bottom, but comes down to personal preference.

Heart rate monitor

Garmin 305.

Wet suit (one piece or two + brand)

Definately one piece for me.  Most of my races are in 60 degree or less water, so I have a full suit.  Brand is a 2xU Velocity 3.  However, I considering buying a sleeveless one for when the water is just a little warmer.  I'll probably buy whatever I can get a good deal on.

Really intrigued by the HRM as I had one on for the first time this PM.  Interesting to see how the body responds to the speed / incline / intensity.  Personally, I need to figure out how to "get some more air" as I did not get tired or feel that my pulse was high (hit 168), I just could not feel like I was getting anything in to the lungs.

Training with HR is a valuable tool.  First, you need to establish your Lactate Threshold which then allows you to establish your HR Zones.  With the zones, you can run or cycle to a certain pace as determined by your HR.  As you become more fit, you will see your pace become faster with a lower corrsponding HR.  It's not about driving your HR up.  In fact, most of your running should be done in Zone 2, which is where slow-twitch (endurance) muscle development occurs.

When endurance racing, the HR monitor becomes valuable in a similar way.  I will use the monitor to make sure I limit my time in the anaerobic zones (5a, 5b, 5c).

That's a quick synopsis.  There is a lot of information out there.  This is an area that I am quite fond of though, so I hope I can answer any questions.

Meulen - 2010-04-21 6:05 AM I got myself a tough dilema:

I'm not a patient person, so I would be moving on.
