I agree with Randi that a week of rest is probably best at this point.  I think the top fit is what you like best as long as it doesn't drag and with a wetsuit that's a non-issue.  I just wear a very tight Under Armour tank top but that's what I'm comfortable in.

You are ready for this race.  And remember to have a blast and really enjoy the whole day.

I just noticed there are a lot of BT'ers doing this race.  Any plan to get together at all?  That would be fun too.  I'm looking forward to meeting some people at the Timberman Sprint next month.

Charlie, I am so excited for your race, I feel like I am running in it!
Easy week this week. Tinkering with my toys and getting everything set up for my training to begin in earnest.
My wife is also ramping up her marathon training, so we are working on logistics as well.

I have been toying with the idea of changing the handlebars on my Giant FCR from flat, mountain style, to drops. I can get all the gear at Nashbar for cheap and already bought new brifters (brake/shifters) for drop bars.

That would give me a bike better suited for some group rides.

I am still recovering from the apple pie and cookies I consumed over the holiday weekend, but it was worth it.

Alright need to get some sleep as I am getting up bright and early to race.  Wanted to put out here my goals for the race though.

1st - Have Fun
2nd - Do Something that a year ago I would have thought impossible
3rd - 22 minute swim, swim pretty safe but never done this before.
4th - 60 minute bike ride, 16MPH.  That might be fast for me though.
5th - 33 minute run
6th - finish under 2 hours

from 3 down are not my big goals but something to shoot for.  1 and 2 are the main ones.

Charlie,
Wow, great report, and congratulations!
I am so happy for your success in the race. Your comment about the swim taking you out of you made me think about my first couple of tris. Swimming wasn't the problem, it was hauling my butt out of the water to T1 that was tough!

Congratulations again and keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the kind words.  The race was alot of fun and I think I can do better once I shake this Sinus stuff I am still fighting.  I went to dr today and they gave me a new antibiotic and another course of prednisone to fight of the inflammation in my sinuses.

I did just register for another sprint race for August 15th, I have been planning on it but did not want to sign up until I got through my first and had fun.

My training will be very light this week as I am going camping in the catskills with the family tomorrow morning.  Will do some runs and short OWS but won't be bringing my bike.

Start training full tilt again next week for the next race and my 1/2 Marathon in September.  Will be adding another run to help build up my volume in the run, while maintaining current levels in Bike and Swim.

Hope everybody has a great week, I will be back on-line Sunday will let you know how the camping went.  We usually have a great time if weather cooperates.

Camping and lake swims sounds great!
Runner's world has some great articles this month about 1/2 marathon plans. I think you can check it all online.

Hey All,
Hump Day comes again!
I hope the silence is from everyone being busy training?
I know that the administrative overhead from Summer life has gotten high, but I hope you are all doing OK.
Anyone celebrating Bastille day with a croissant?

Quiet from working out and work.  I had a great bike time trial yesterday.  Tuesday is my day to hammer a bike route as fast as I can manage.  I rode a course I've done a lot in years past.  It's a 14.3 hilly route, my previous best was 51:22 (16.7 MPH).  Yesterday I did it in 43:51!! (19.5).  I actually checked my bike computer to be sure I hadn't stopped it by mistake.  Crazy.  Now if I could only run!

Warren - that's great news about the Time Trial...it is really nice to see such a significant improvement...all that hard work is paying off!

Bastille Day is my eldest daughter's birthday - so we spent the day catering to her. Not really - but we did let her choose where we ate for dinner. Nice day.

Next weekend is my 1 year anniversary of my first attempt at a tri...I ended up DNF'ing (my bike chain hopped off and got wrapped around my crank). I walked the bike to where my family was waiting (the bike route goes right by my street) and promptly burst into tears. A year later - I am much better trained (and I thought at the time, I was pretty well trained). I did a dry run of the course yesterday and finished it about 15 minutes faster than I did last year (not counting transition times)...I keep thinking about how it will feel to *finally* cross the finish line (because it is a local race, I will know a lot of the people participating and watching)...now to just get it done!

Hope all have a great weekend!

Jennifer, you are going to give that race some serious payback.  You have trained so well this year - I think you would be more prepared for my half that I am!  I can't wait to read the race report for that one.

Hey everybody, back from my camping trip.  I did a couple of runs and a quick OWS.  Other than that I really did not train much this week, so I am pretty well recovered from race and ready to go.   Now I just need to recover from the camping trip.

So I have started looking at HM plans and am nervous I am getting a late start.  I just need to remember that I just want to complete it and have fun, as well as continue to prepare for another Sprint Tri on 8/15, and one on 9/19 (Maybe).  HM is 9/12 so that gives me exactly 8 weeks to prepare.  I found these plans on the web and was wondering what you guys thought.

I would start this one on Week 3.  Big step up in Mileage though from where I am now, but I meet all the pre-training requirements.
http://www.marathonrookie.com/half-marathon-training.html

This plan is even bigger jump in mileage, but ..
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244--6851-2-2X5X8-4,00.html

So what do you guys think?

Jennifer,
There is NOTHING better than beating a time at a previous race. I have a couple in my sights from last year, but I am not sure when I will get back at them.
Your motivation is inspiring!!!!

Charlie,
OK, so I didn't look at the articles you posted. However, I have a link for you.
My wife and I used the beginners plan from this site for 2 or 3 years and it has worked for us. Our goal was generally to get in the long run and at least 2 others, even if they might be short. Helped us at Disney, and Marine Corps.
http://www.runningplanet.com/training/half-marathon-training.html
Actually, that is the list of all of the half plans. Here is the half plan that coresponds to the full plan we used:
http://www.runningplanet.com/training/half-marathon-training-program-recreational.html

The biggest thing to remember is that the beating your body takes on a half marathon is much greater than the equivalent length in time in a tri. You WILL be sore.
However, it is SOOOOOO great. I love the Half Marathon distance.
Good luck!!!!

Hey all,
So, how was everyones weekend? My croissant didn't rise well, but other than that, we had a fun weekend. Got in a decent ride, a decent run and a training with my group.
There were some waves during our OWS, so it turned into something of a bodysurfing session.
I have never seen waves that big here in FL, so it was loads of fun. I would say there were some 8-10 footers out there. Big enough to drop me over the side.
Had a great run today, although a little later than usual.

My biggest struggle some days is getting my head around the day if I don't get in my morning training. It can throw the whole day off in a way it never used to.

Have a great week everyone!

eliwashere - 2010-07-20 4:00 AM Hey all,
So, how was everyones weekend? My croissant didn't rise well, but other than that, we had a fun weekend.

With Croissant dough - I have found that it is critical to proof the yeast very thoroughly before adding it to the flour mixture. After the four or so turns (getting the butter layers), a good rise session of an hour or more is also important. You've got the right weather there - keep trying! [disclaimer - I was a pastry chef in a past life, so I couldn't help jumping in]

My biggest struggle some days is getting my head around the day if I don't get in my morning training. It can throw the whole day off in a way it never used to.

Have a great week everyone!

I have found if I "sleep" through my morning workout - I never seem to find enough time elsewhere to fit it in. Morning training is really the only way I can get it done with no excuses. I also feel like it impacts my family less (they are still sleeping while I am out and about), so I am able to spend time with them when they are ready to spend time with me. The difficulty lies on days when I don't get enough sleep ... then I'm faced with the conundrum of which is more important - sleep or workout. My eldest daughter (10 years old) is having difficulty falling asleep right now, so two nights ago when she finally fell asleep at 1:30a (!) I already decided that I wouldn't be able to get up at 5:15 for the early workout the next morning. I ended up not getting a workout in at all - but I do think 4 hours of sleep wouldn't have been enough.

Charlie - I agree with Eli - Just take your time building up to the long runs - you will be fine. It is much harder on your body than the equivalent time spent in tris, but as you build up to the distance, your body will adapt to the longer distance/more pounding. Swimming right after a long run was very helpful for me to make my joints and muscles feel better (kind of like a low key ice water bath).

Have a great weekend all!

I totally agree with Jennifer on the morning workouts.  If I can't get up early and get a workout done, the odds of working it in later are slim for me.  I just have a hard time justifying being away from the family for one hour or more of the 3 or 4 post work hours I have while they are awake.  I try hard to fit things in at lunch at work, but that is a smaller time window.

And you can definitely build up Charlie, just be smart.  I agree with the 10% rule both for long run and total weekly miles.  And keep the fast stuff down to a reasonably small percentage of total miles run.  The key to running is staying healthy.  As a new runner, that's priority 1, 2, and 3.  Running is WAY tougher on the body than swimming or biking, both in terms of wear and tear and especially in recovery time required.  Listen to your body and don't sweat shortening/missing runs when your body says no.
