Great job on the race, Denise!  That one looked like a lot of fun.  I may give it a try next year.  I wouldn't have expected the rough terrain either from the info I saw.

CONGRATULATIONS, Denise! That sounds like SUCH a blast-- how cool that you could do it together, too! I know they have such things in my vicinity, too: will think about that for next year. Thanks for telling us all about it!

Has this ever happened to anyone?? Yesterday I had a swimming lesson.  This is my 2nd lesson with Jeff (the amazing coach) and he had me doing a lot of different stuff.  Just like the last time I ended up swallowing a lot (I mean a lot) of pool water.  At the end of the lesson he had me working on flip turns.  All of the sudden I was so nauseous that I thought I was going to throw up.  I managed to finish the lesson and drove home and went right to bed (at 6:30pm).  I woke up at 9:30 and had some yogurt and went back to bed.  This Am I walked the dogs and got ready for work. (I couldn't do an AM workout due to rain.)  I thought I was doing OK but once I started drinking my coffee the nausea came back.  I don't know if it was the cofee or the driving (I have motion sickness but I'm usually OK if I drive).  Does anyone have any ideas on this?  Of course I'm especially stressed because tomorrow is my mid-week tri and really want to feel 100%.  Oh yeah, along with drinking a lot of pool water I also got a lot up my nose and in my ears.  Like I said Jeff has me doing a lot of different stuff to improve my position in the water.  Any explanations or suggestions are welcome.

Janet, I think the nausea with the flip turns is normal until you get used to them, because you are actually turning your whole body upside down in about a couple of seconds.  It's kind of like those ballet dancers that do spins, they have to spot on something to keep from getting dizzy.  You'll work it out the more you do them, but I'm not surprised you got nauseous if you are prone to motion sickeness... and gulping down gallons of pool water can't help, either!  As to this morning, a lot of coffee on an empty stomach makes me kind of edgy and makes my tummy rebel.  I don't thing it's still from yesterday's swim.  Try not to worry about it, I know you are feeling nervous, but you already know you can do the distance!!  Only difference is there will be lots more people with you.  And you won't be doing any flip turns in the tri, at least not on purpose!!!  Ha ha, just kidding!  It is so good you are working with the Wonder Coach!!  You can read and watch swim videos up the ying yang, but you really need someone else to look at you to point out where you can improve, you just can't see it in yourself while you are swimming.

I would stick to eating things you know will agree with you until after the tri, just to be safe.  Nerves and stress do unusual things to us, so try and stay relaxed, easier said than done!

Janet,
I had the same thing happen to me earlier this spring.  After a swim, I thought I would work on flip turns and made it through five or six before I started feeling sick.  The nausea subsided after an hour or two, but continued to come and go to a lesser extent for about 24 hours.  I have worked on flip turns a couple more times since then, but only before my swim or during the first few laps, and the nausea has not returned.  I'm not experienced enough to know much more than that; but that has worked for me.

Hi All,

Just a quick "drive by" post to let everyone know that I am fine and thanks for all the notes.  My work schedule since the tornado has been crazy.  I am working early mornings and late nights.  With the hectic schedule my training is suffering.  The good news is that next week should provide some relief and hopefully get back to my full schedule.  Right now I am just fitting in what I can in between all of the other activities.

I have enjoyed reading the posts from the race events.  Great job everyone!  Keep up the great work!

Here's a heads up on this week's racers!!

Janet is racing her first REAL tri TONIGHT!!!  The weather may not cooperate, but hopefully it will hold off for the race.  She already has done the entire tri in training, so now she can have fun with it!!

Janet has a 5K On Saturday... she is just a racing machine these days!!

Jordan has her very first tri on Sunday!!!  Love all the firsts!

Alex has a tri in California on Sunday, and she just did one 2 weeks ago, amazing!!

WOOT! Go MMM racers!

I'll be leaving for Cape Cod on Saturday morning and will not be returning until Wednesday evening. I don't think I'll have internet access - if I do I'll surprise you and drop in to say hi I am taking my bike and my running shoes, and who knows but I suspect there will be no OWS's in the ocean as I bet it will be fffffreezing without a wetsuit. I'm sure I'll be "here" before we leave but just didn't want anyone to think I was MIA this weekend and early next week.

Thank you everyone for all your inspires for my first triathlon.  It was awesome!!Laughing  The swim went better than I had hoped, the bike was awesome (I felt really, really strong) and the run (except for a side stitch at the end) was good.  I think if I do another evening event I will need to eat something between lunch and the start.  I had a hammer bar but I don't think that was enough.  Race report link is in my training log.

The weather held until later in the evening.  On the way home I heard that the area was under a tornado warning and funnel clouds were sighted.

I guess I'm in the market for a new bike computer.  My old one (which was only about 4 months old!) popped off my bike during my transition on Wednesday and wasn't to be found.  I have a forerunner so it isn't an emergency or anything but I'm interested in hearing what everyone recommends.  Whatever I get I need to have the sensor on the back wheel so I can use it when I'm riding my trainer.  Any recommendations appreciated.

I LOVE my Garmin 305!!  I use it for running and on my bike.  I know you can get a cadence sensor but I'm not sure if you can put the sensor on the back wheel or not, in fact, I'm not sure if it will measure distance on a trainer.

What a good thought.  Tell me, do you use the 305 during a tri?  I didn't want to take the time to strap something on my wrist.  (or do you have the bike mount?)

I'm signed up for the Warrior Dash here in September! One of my friends asked if I wanted to do it with her and I remembered Jonathan's lovely description and thought what the heck.

Should be an adventure.

I'm still trying to find another tri or two for late summer/early fall. Last one I'm signed up for is 7/31. Can't be done that early.

I have both the bike mount and the quick release wrist strap and I DO use it on a race.  I've found that if I put it on my wrist during T1, then I can glance at it during the bike, and then it's already on and I don't have to worry about moving it from the bike to the wrist strap during T.   I may just wait and use it on the run, though, since I rarely look at it during the bike and it won't change the way I ride... I rely on the official race results for my splits because I never remember to turn it off!

How cool Kory!!  I need to look up the Warrior Dash too... I know we had one up in Dallas earlier in the year, but maybe they come back in the fall.  It's something my hubby would actually do with me and sounds like blast!

YAAAAAAAYYYY Jordan!!! Triathlete rocked da house!! *cheers and whoops*

Thanks for all the inspires and good wishes, everyone-- since my musings on the race are RIDICULOUSLY long this time around, I've posted them on my blog but will spare you the blathering here. All went well for what I could do on the day, so I'm pleased. Today and tomorrow are days off, methinks, though...

Hope you all had wonderful weekends!

Sorry I've been MIA for the past few days.  Just a lot going on between work and life.  Was out of town last weekend and will be gone again this Thursday thru next Monday or Tuesday.

Congrats on your first tri, Jordan!

Kory, you will have a blast with the warrior dash!
