Meulen - 2011-02-09 11:04 AM So I guess my Swim workout QOTD was a bust! LOL anyone got any other favorite workouts?

someone give me some integrated tricep workouts into running, swimming, and biking please. my biceps are taking over my arms. ahh.... i do not want man arms!!!  i guess this just calls for some old-fashion strength training with weights and machines, huh? so.boring.
swimming should be blasting those triceps

not as much as my biceps and deltoids. i know in my yoga classes, i stick with mainly biceps because i do so many chatarungas. my biceps have always been pretty good, but they are really getting bulking maybe with so much swimming. i'm not saying that i have bad triceps, but they are definitely not balanced out. does anyone use wrist weights while swimming?
Almost nothing we are doing should be "bulking" you up. You could be losing body fat and muscle tone is increasing, but the only bulking up you may see is in your legs from cycling. If you're getting faster why are you worried about it?

um...really? why am i worried about my arms looking bulky? you're asking the wrong girl!
LOL.....I should have known better! Seriously though, sometimes I gain some lbs (both muscle and fat) over winter when I focus on strength and shorter workouts. As you start lengthening the time of your workouts you'll lose some of that. I just don't want to see you worried about little things like that. I'll be willing to bet it's not all that bad, maybe Michael will confirm. I've honestly never seen a women get to be what I consider "too bulky" without being on steroids.

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard out loud in response to an email as I just did to your last sentence!! "I've honestly never seen a women get to be what I consider "too bulky" without being on steroids." That's awesome.

I made it to the pool this morning!  I was quite pleased with myself!  It has been a long time!  And Brian, your QOTD was not a bust, I just haven't had any swim workouts lately to share!  As far as other fun workouts, in the summer I enjoy a good brick.  My favorites are when I combine a few.  Something like ride for 30 minutes, run for 15 minutes, ride for 30 minutes, run for 15 minutes, maybe repeat another time.  Usually the ride and run are not too intense, but I am still tired at the end.

And, I wish I had to worry about being too bulky....

Yes, I am glad they opened it back up just for me.  Now if they would just make everyone else leave so it would truly be just mine.  Laughing

I do have a question.  Where does everybody store their wetsuit?  I just got one before Christmas and I don't know where to put it.  I had it on a chair in the spare bedroom, but I noticed that the sun shines there a lot and I didn't think that would be good.  Now it is laying on the bed, but I have found myself putting laundry on it when I carry it upstairs.  Maybe I am just not used to it being there yet.  Any other suggestions?

Mine came with a breathable bag. I fold it up, put it in there and keep it in my closet. A few days before an event I soak it in the bath tub for a couple hours. That seems to put the moisture back in the suit and make it more plyable and easy to take on/off.

Erin, I hear you!!!! I have the same issue! Brian says my arms aren't bulky, but I definitely think they are sometimes. Especially when I am in a group fitness class at the gym with mirriors in front of me! My biceps are defnitley more toned than my triceps..... I think that is probably true for most women at least. I blame my "over toned" arms on my swimming background but it only seems to show when working out. It's better than flabby, I look at it that way! I think since being in my thirties the untoned triceps compared to biceps are more obvious. Your arms probably look fine!!!!! I'm sure you don't have "man arms". You probably just look fit. I know that is the point I'm at right now with arms..... They look fit & I worry they'll get too big with swimming.

Okay folks, I'm off to Mexico in T minus 6 hours and 8 minutes. If I get the chance to post my "workouts" while I'm there, I will. Otherwise I'll catch up on the 17th.
Have a good week!!!!!

I have a couple of things for this post:

1.  First, and most important to the spirit of this blog, deals with swimming.  I went to the pool tonight with the idea of working through some of the plans that Brian posted earlier.  Of course I forgot to take them with me, so I did what I could remember.  Wow!  What a difference in training.  I have been swimming some decent distances before, but after adding drills I can feel a huge difference.  I really felt like I got a great workout in so many ways (and yes Erin, I can really feel it in my triceps!)  It does not matter if you swim long distances or short, it will increase your swimming strength.

2.  Brian and Summergirl, Erin has no clue what she's talking about.  Her arms are by no means to big or bulky, but she's just way too critical of herself!  I have been telling her since she began training that if she just focuses on training for a tri then everything will eventually come together.  Also, don't forget that she does a lot of yoga and pilates.  There's no hope in this argument

this is cracking me up! You're right, lost cause argument! All I'm going to say about that is "fit chicks rule"!! LOL

Henry, have a blast in Mexico!

Michael, I'm glad those swim workouts felt good. Swimming is really cool that way. You don't have to spend so much time focussing on the distance. Distance is there and gets faster when you break it up and focus on speed.

Brian,
When you are swimming, how much do you use your legs?  I had read not to really use your legs in a tri except for the end to get them loosened up.  When I am swimming, I pretty much drag my lower half.  I am sure that there is some occasional movement, but it's very minimal.  What's your take on this?

The simple answer is: Just enough to hold your back end up and keep you balanced. Everyone, is comfortable with a different kick. I use a 2 beat/4 beat hybrid. I 2 beat kick with some little flutters for the other 2. Usually, whatever your comfortable with is fine. You don't need to kick a lot for distance swimming.

It was -8 degrees when I was standing on the platform waiting for my train this morning. Henry better enjoy Mexico!!! lol

Yes, if you're ever at a race where the water is too warm to wear a wetsuit you'll see a whole lot of people freak out! People use it as a crutch. Wetsuits make you quite a bit more bouyant and slip through the water faster.

I was shocked how much the wetsuit keeps you floating.  I could lay on my back and not move a muscle and I was floating high out of the water.  I felt that even if someone pushed me down, I would pop back up without effort.  I love my wetsuit.   And I have never heard a woman who hated getting toned arms.  The only way to get super big arms is to lift really heavy weights and even then it takes a lot of time and effort.  My arms look much more toned now that I am training for the trathilon.  That gives an impression that they are bigger but they were much much bigger when I was lifting weights.  They look better now though.  Unless you are curling 50 - 100 pounds a lot, you won't get too big.  It certainly won't look out of place since the rest of you is getting toned as well.  I will tell you that my legs are way bigger than they have ever been.  It is kinda wierd looking and my pants are tighter around the legs and looser around the waste.  I used to have chicken legs and now I have tree trunks.

Anyone have any good suggestions for decent affordable wetsuit?  Has anyone tried the $100 Xterra?  I will be looking for one once we hit spring.  Then I have to find a good place to practice open water swimming.

I haven't tried the xterra suits but people on the site seem to like them. If you can it's best to go try some on. All the brands fit a little different. If you can't try them go to trisports and use their fit calculater. That's how I got mine and it worked out well.

here is a picture of my arm! (i know, very weird)....see- bigger in the front, needs work in the back. ha! now, does anyone use wrist weights when swimming? or is that just too odd?

*arm deleted!*

hahahahahahhahahaha ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

People at work are wondering what I'm laughing at!! LOL

OK,
Erin you can use paddles and or web gloves swimming. That will give those tri's a workout. But be sure you've got your form down first or you will damage your shoulders!! And I'm not admitting you have bulky arms!!! Both yours and Anne's look fine to me!!

Trishorts: People are different with what they like. For me, I use desoto, Louis Garneau, and Pearl Izumi mostly. I tried out a pair of desoto tri bibs last night for the first time and REALLY like them!!! I've got desoto 400 mile bibs and a one piece desoto speedfoil I like too. I have a Pearl Izumi P.R.O. trisuit that I like minus the fact my legs are too skinny and the grippers don't have enough leg to hang on to. (Now I sound like Erin and Anne!! )

they aren't weighted. Remember, water itself creates resistance. Putting paddles on is going to make your catch feel like you are lifting weights!
