I got a great run in this morning with a friend, 14 total.
We warmed up for 4 miles, and then got in 8 @ tempo pace (right around 6:20) followed by a 2 mile easy cool down.
Legs felt good and was happy with it considering how windy it was!

newbz - 2011-01-09 1:05 PM  5- start doing the sockless thing in cooler weather before it gets real hot (the sweat will make the blister issue worse), use baby powder when starting out, NOT BODY GLIDE. body glide will pick up dust/dirt and will come off, the baby power will work into the shoes and over time form a soft feeling layer, and works wet or dry.

Dude, is this like having a gooey layer of feet-smelling babypowder in your shoes at all times!?

haha no it's not a gooey mess.

Put in some, and shake it around to coat the inside, then shake them out. You know when shoes (racing ones more) get older, the inside gets smooth/feels more like a sock? That's what it feels like. The power pulls moisture off your feet sort of like a wicking fabric.

Run wise the goal is to lower run times as much as i can (mainly 5k/10k distances)
Number wise i want to get the 5k as close to 16 min as i can by some of the bigger races this year, and the half marathon under 1:20

Awesome.  Good luck with that!  I'm cheering for ya and hope to get to see you race at some point.

Tried to do my 40 min run.  First few minutes my left PF hurt a little and went away by about a mile in.  Running very slow and comfortable.  I got probably 2 miles in and my intestines wanted to kill me.  I for some reason had this sour stomach that would stop me in my tracks 40 seconds or so each time I tried to run.  Soooo, along with wind chill of 10 degrees, that was pretty fun.  I know I should TTFU, but whew, that's just not fun.

Rick,

Your situation is a little tricky.  It would help if you could narrow down what you are doing for your workouts and how you go about them.  I used to cramp up on the run during a brick workout because I just got off the bike and went too fast.  Are you doing a sufficient warm-up?  When do you start getting the cramps?  Only on hard workouts?

What I would try is:  Get on your bike and spin loosely for 15 minutes (small chain ring front/middle in back).  Focus on your pedal stroke so you are making a nice circular pressure on both pedals (pulling up, forward, down, back with each foot).  After 15 minutes try picking up your workout from there.  Lower your cadence and focus on that pedal stroke.  Keep your lower back straight (you want to tilt your pelvis, not round your back) and keep loose.  Cramps can come into play when your position on the bike makes you tense in the legs.

Warm-ups are definitely an issue. I have a really bad tendancy to just start. Very little warm-up, just go out there and do it. I really should know better by now.

My most recent ride, only 19.45 miles, went well for 11 miles. I was through the hills and on flat roads for the remaining 8 miles, and a little bit into the 11th mile my calfs started cramping. Not bad this time, but enough that I need to address the problem.

I believe I've learned decent position on the saddle. I ran across a couple of pictures showing correct and incorrect posture, coupled with a description that made sense to me.

I've been told a couple of techniques for pedaling. I try to concentrate on technique, but end up thinking about something else until I remember to concentrate. "Big Circles", wiping $#!t off your shoe, leg press movements...good pedaling movement is described differently by everyone; I'm trying to figure out.

What do you guys think of these wheels?  I am looking for a birthday present for my girlfriend.  Looking at the 58 carbon clincher.  A friend of mine bought a pair and seems to love them.

They make nice wheels from everything i've heard.

Also check out:
Gavia 50mm by prolite (i think within 90$ of the price of the williams and great wheels, i raced for them two years ago, so can vouch personally)

planet X (not sure if they make clincher though),

In good news though, the swim program I signed up for starts tomorrow.    It's with the town's tri club, and it was in danger of getting cancelled due to low registration.  There's enough people in it now though, so it will run.  I really need it.  I just learned to swim last May and I've taken 2 adult swim classes.  I feel like they really only teach the basics in the adult classes though, and I need something that is more specific to front crawl, and hopefully I'll get some good feedback on technique.

How exciting!  I wish I could find a program like that.  Around here it seems to be competitive masters teams for the most part.   That means you already need to be fast before you can join.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about your swim group!

jgerbodegrant - 2011-01-09 11:39 AM David (or anyone else)

I am only doing short course stuff this year (oly & sprint) and over the past two years have lost a lot of time in transition due to drying feet off/putting socks on.  I have gone through the results and I have lost at least one place in my age group due to transition times in each race.  So as far as I'm concerned this should be an easy place for me to make up time.  I want to race sockless.  How do I go about working into socklessness??  Do I start now?  I'm up in NH, so I can't exactly go run outside without socks on, or I'd have more problems than just blisters.  I figured you can't just do part of your workouts sockless....not like I'm going to stop in the middle and take them off.  What's the best way to go about this?

Dave really made good comments on this and I will just chime in with my two cents. I turned to sockless last year and haven't gone back. I tried it out as an experimentation on a random short run (bout 3-4 miles) last summer. I liked the feel a lot and delt with only small blisters on my first couple of runs. I got them mostly on my big toes, but after a couple of weeks those blisters were gone and I have not had any problems since. I always do keep socks nearby and always leave a pair in T2, I also left a pair in my SN bag at IMWI last year just incase things turned bad fast.

Currently I am running on Brooks Ghost 3, but Dave's comments on Zoot shoes are right on, they have the least amount of seems on the inside. I have never ran on them, but seen them in person and they seem as a great option for a sockless runner. I love the feel of running without socks, and it almost seems to cool me off just a tad more, compared to running with socks. This is big for me as I seem to overheat very easily.

My advice would be to start running with out socks at first in short distances 2,3, 4 miles. See how it works and go from there. And with temps, start when you feel warm enough. I live in Wisconsin and probably wont go sockless until 40's or 50's hit. Good luck!

Ben, agreed on your points, and i'm also running in brooks at least over hte winter (zoots cost too much too trash with the mileage right now). using the racer ST 4 and loving them, no issues without socks on those but i wear them anyway once it gets cold.

Weekly check in for me:

weight wise i'm up a few pounds from a few weeks ago (mirror does not lie!) so that's a goal to knock that back off

training wise, simply get in a good run week, aiming for 60 miles total + a track day.

newbz - 2011-01-09 1:07 PM You have not run in months, i'd be careful with even 15. have you been doing longer walks? If so i'd do something like a few min walk, 1 min run, and slowly change the ratio. When i came back from my stress fracture i was allowed 400m every other day for a week, then 800 at a time for a week, then slowly worked up to 15 min at a time over the next two. It can take some time to get thigns back, but be careful and remember your aerobic system will be WAY ahead of your legs and what they can handle.

Thanks.  I checked out the BT "Aggressive" couch to 5K Plan and I was surprised by how much walking it indicated.  I'm going to dial things way back.

Weigh-in 159
Plan same as last week except for a full 30 minute run today maybe some longer training rides see how I feel. I am fighting a chest cough.

I have taken my running back to basics as Dave said in his article and I am just running - not putting too much thought into time and distance ring now.  My Thursday and Saturday runs were exactly this. This was a big boost to my EGO Laughing as I was very frustrated with my running at year-end.

Thanks.  I think I am going to start this week.  There must be at least one day above 30 degrees that I can just shoot for 1 or 2 miles.  I will look into those brooks as well.  I never thought of the heat issue.  I too heat up really fast.  That may help!  thanks....

I've thought about similar possibilities. I'm planning on getting a proper fitting soon, I just need to figure out where exactly. It'll be in Tucson, but I was originally thinking of TriSports until a friend who rides for Trek Landis told me about another place that costs a little less for a fitting. I need to get it done as soon as I can get to Tucson so that I don't end up with this same problem this summer.

I also ordered SpeedPlay Light Action pedals over the weekend. I've read a lot about how they can help with some types of knee problems.
