I am planning a 1 hr. trainer ride after my supper digests for a bit.  I was shoveling snow for the past hour and a half because we got dumped on today.  I am guessing we got about 6 inches of light fluffy snow.  My wife and I shoveled our neighbors drive because her husband died a month ago and we kind of watch out for her a little bit.  She has 3 sons that live close by (15-30 minutes) but we thought they could use the break from having to look out for her and do all the extras for her and take care of their own families.

Melanie,
How bout shippin some of those dumplins this way, I haven't had that for a long time.

I hope the race taper is kind to you.  I hate tapering for the half marathon.  I think I like the HM so much and the training for it that I don't want to slow down the week before.

Hamlet,
I am pretty sure it's not nearly as cold where you are as it is here.  It sounds like you're slackin to me.  LOL  I think you should put on your big boy pants and go for that ride.  LOL

Hit the gym for 2 hours of spinning, they have a new computer system that figures calories burned and exertion. I burned 2200 calories and the computer told me I was over doing it for the last hour Drank 64 ounces of water so far, it is funny how that is one of the hardest goals I have"at least during the winter"

J Glad the hand is ok

I agree Dirk he should of went for a ride, it finally hit the mid 20's here.

I got that trainer ride in but I would like to have gotten 1.5 hours done.  I shoveled snow for an hour and that threw off my plans.  Oh well, I'll get that ride this weekend but I'll have to get it earlier than I would like.  That all day swim meet is going to cramp my sleeping in plans.  (If you think sleeping in until 7:30 and being lazy until 10AM is "sleeping in.")

The ride was in mid Z3 but I was up into Z4 at several points during the ride.  I really have to focus more on getting a little more effort in on these bikes.  Any way, 21.25 miles in 1:06:00 for a 19.1 speed avg.

Got a 30ish minute run into tonight. Feel good to get back running. I wanted to nap so bad after an early dinner tonight but wanted to stick to my goals, get a run in, and be able to sleep tonight so I pushed through it!

Run went pretty well. It was my easy run of the week so I took some walking laps when I felt like I was pushing a little too hard. Seemed like interval day for everyone else at the gym though. While they took their sprint laps I took my walking ones :P

haha! guys...
well it was low 30s and that's probably as cold as it will get all year long..
BUT it was raining and the roads here are terrible...thus the decision to stay in my comfortable and warm bed with my big fluffy pillow to get an hour more of sleep. LOL

did go for a run though. I love running in this weather.

hit the gym for a quick 2 miler before work and strength training, planning on run and swim tomorrow, starting to dethaw so can go back outdoors for the run.

Filling in my calender for the 20 week olympic 3x balanced the days with 2 workouts in a day it advises to do one morning and one night, is it detrimental to do them as bricks early in the training program?  Just thinking of what the schedule allows for me especially winter hours...

If bricks are the only way you can get them done, then by all means, do them.  But the reason the plan has you do one in the morning and one at night is to try and give your body about 6-10 hours of rest between workouts.  Thus allowing each workout to get a little more quality.

So is it "detrimental"...in a nut shell...yes.  But we do what we can do.  It won't kill your race or training...but not all of us have the time to train the "ideal" way.  Doing a brick is better than doing just one workout.  Just keep in mind that the intensity level or duration the workout calls for may need to be toned back a hair.  Otherwise it may impact your other workouts the next day.

Gearing up for a run outside 25 degrees and light snow, and then hitting the pool for a workout.

DirkP - 2011-01-11 5:46 AM I probably have to revise my goals for this week.  After last nights swim meet I may try to get another Brick in tonight but it will be a long shot.  If I push it to much I won't get some other goals completed, one of which is making sure I don't exhaust my wife from MY training.

There are 2 more swim meets this week, another evening meet on Thursday and then an all day Saturday conference meet.  I will already have my long run in on Friday so I may not be able to get my longer bike in.  It will depend on when I have to be at the meet Saturday.

reading your posts exhaust me LOL.  J's too.  I don't know how you guys fit so much in during a weekday.

Anyway for me today is just a 30 minute easy trainer ride and some upper body/core stuff.  Then 2 miles easy tomorrow on TM....will be too cold for swimming.  Then Fri and Sat I'll do nothing...cept feed my face

LOL  Right now I am exhausted.  I have been sitting in the chair falling asleep for the past 45 minutes.  I try to never do that.  I wanted to log my run for tonight and it's almost crash time.

J,
I don't mind running in the cold weather.  Single digits aren't bad as long as the wind isn't howling.  I have run several times when it's nasty out and it is ALWAYS better than the treadmill.

I got 5 miles in tonight in the slushy, unpacked snow from yesterday.  My calves are always sore after I run in that stuff because it causes me to push off differently.  The effort is always stronger too, for the same reason.  It was a good run despite wanting desperately to skip the run.

Got in a good swim, but missed my run.  I have been having calf problems.  Any suggestions?  I am going to lay off the run until the weekend and see how it feels.

What kind of calf problems are you having? Tightness?  Soreness?  Before, during, or after the workouts?  Is it just run related...or do you feel it when biking and swimming?

Managed to wedge my run and bike together after work.  With a short 30-40 minute break in between.  Both workouts were great.

Decided I didn't want to set myself up to fail by aiming too high and trying for the 3x workout plan right out of the gate, I proabaly could have done it but I would have missed some workouts or screwed with the tempo and that would have messed with my head (I'm one of those follow the recipe exactly type of people)  so I'm doing the 2x so as not to get discouraged...  swim and a bike today for me

Hi all, I'm in this group though you wouldn't guess it.

My apologies for not posting, I am just now getting off of a three week cold which involved many trips to doctors, various gross things coming out of my lungs, and minimal working out. First day back at work, I am crawling out of a glut I am very pissed that the first half of January is now done and I have done jack squat in 2011.

Gonna ramp up relatively slowly, will start posting here regularly, let you in on more details. Short story: I want to do a 3x / week training for a sprint triathlon in June or so (need to pick a race still). I'm coming off a season cut short with achilles tendonitis (finished bike portion of olympic last March, and then stopped with achilles pain: didn't do any other tris last season ).

If anyone has any "couch to sprint" suggestions for training plans, I'm all open ears and teachable! I tend to go too hard, so will do the opposite and follow a true beginner plan. Plan to do stretching for real, not just when injured, to actually prevent injuries. And eat healthier, get down to 195 pounds (from 209: I'm 6'4").

So, a belated hello to my group and mentor, I will work through all the posts in this group over the next few days see what I have missed.

I have had achilles problems since last March due to overtraining (partially from a stupid attempt to switch to a type of running that used more calf than hamstring: that's like using your pinky to do pull ups, just silly).

What helps me (this is after seeing two physical therapists and a massage therapist):
1. Rest (for me this meant more swim, less run)
2. Ice (I take an ice cube and rub it directly where it hurts), or I dunk my whole foot in a bucket of ice water.
3. Stretch (against the wall calf stretches, but not to pain, but so I am comfortable still and hold it for 30 seconds (once with leg straight, once with leg bent to get the gastrocnemeus versus soleus muscles, respectively)). I still have to do these 5-10 times a day or my pain returns (did I mention I am still fighting achilles tendonitis).
4. Anti-inflamatory mecidine (though just be careful of stressing the muscle because it feels good while it is under the influence of a pain killer, don't forget number 1). Either advil or arthritis cream such as capsaicin.

If the pain isn't too bad:
5. Strengthening exercises (calf raises on the stair, slow up, slow down, don't bounce). 10-15 reps a day, morning and evening, and then more as comfort increases with that.

If you are into this kind of thing:
6. Light cross-frictional massage (massage the painful area so lightly it doesn't hurt, perpendicular to the axis of the muscle, so in this case across the calf).

Also, if you find anything that really helps, please let us know, I'm still fighting my achilles problems!!!
