Jaime1017 - 2011-02-28 8:03 PM So I broke down and bought a new bike today. After riding my mountain bike along side a friend on a road bike I realized mountain bikes suck. I tried out a friends Tri bike to test that one and see if I could use it instead but that didnt work out, so I decided to go get fitted and buy one. I can't believe what a difference it makes. Excited for the tri less than 2 weeks!

Congrats on the new bike!  What did you get?

Giant Dash 3, its an entry level bike but I love it. I tried to post the link to it but I am still learning how to use this thing =)

I wanted to add about the core workouts. I cant believe how much of a difference it makes. I have been slacking off due to training for everything, but I am getting back into it this week with my trainer. Now my body can hate me even more....

Nice!  You'll notice some instant speed with the skinnier tires.

I never have but that looks like fun.  They have some 8 and 24 hour adventure races around here that look pretty fun but don't have near the variety the one you sent the link for.

I've done nothing like that, but I'd be all over it if they had one like that around here.  My wife and I did something called the Jailbreak Run, which is very similar to the Warrior Dash, last summer and loved it.

I have a couple of friends that have done the Urban Challenge things and have heard mixed results.  It is supposed to be like an Amazing Race type challenge, but they said it was more like a scavenger hunt and not very physically challenging.

I've never seen anything that quite compares to that race, though, and with the location I bet it's a beautiful environment to boot.  Do you camp out there and stuff too?  That sounds like a lot of fun.

It's actually really close to where my dad and husband hunt. My parents used to always threaten to move there when I was a teenager and misbehaving. LOL We haven't done much camping, maybe this year. I don't like taking babies camping... loose dirt everywhere, rattlesnakes and cold nights, not my idea of a great place for toddlers/babies.

Mike said something about an adventure race where they have an hourly time, like 8 hrs or 12 and you run a loop on the trail and try to see how many loops you and your team can get in. I think that sounds like fun but that is something they don't have close to us yet.

How about relays? Anyone done any of those?

relay sounds like fun. i realized last year that i'm such a klutz that i really oughta stick to paved surfaces for my running, lol. had a trail run in my 10K group i thought would be such fun, but i spent most of my energy trying not to fall down (and yes, i did anyway). this is why i'm better on water than dry land.

Subject: first training ride of the year

I'm SO stoked... temps were supposed to hit 60 today, so took Bikey outside to ride with a teammate (I train/race with a local charity team). Friend's aiming for 1/2 IM in the fall, so proposed riding a loop of that course...meanwhile, I'm freaking bc my 1st oly race is mid-may, I've gained 15 pounds, feel mushy & weak, and have the dumb ankle thing, and it looked like it was going to pour.

We headed out and decided to bail  on the longer ride & aim for the oly course after the 1st 6 miles, and I wanted to turn around and bail altogether after the 1st 8. It wasn't my ankle, just my huffing & puffing and tired legs, so my pal wouldn't let me - said she knew I could do it.

Man, did it feel good to finish that ride, and what a good friend not to let me give up (she's a PT, too, so I knew I was in good hands!). Even better when I realized our avg speed was just a hair faster faster than we were when we rode the same course in November, last outdoor ride of the year... best of all to look at my bike computer when I was passing a speed limit sign at one point and realize I was speeding.... There were some killer hills, so feeling really confident now.  What a great ride!!

Hope everyone's having a good weekend......

Yay jaime that is very exciting! Can't wait to hear how it goes. Today is my first daughters fifth birthday. My lower back was acting up so I went in and got a massage. It was quite nostalgic- reminded me of labor actually. HahaThis guy is a sports massage person, so his aim is to fix any imbalances or injuries. I hope it was the productive sort of pain. I'm going back on monday and I really think it will be money well spent.

My friend shared this on facebook, it's a video of a father/son team doing the iron man.

I found it very moving. In the spirit of full disclosure, I'll let you know that it's put to the song, "Redeemer."

"A true story

One day a son asks his father:
"Daddy, will you run the marathon with me?"
The father answers yes and both run their first marathon together.
One day, the son asks his father if he wants to run the marathon with him again and the father answers yes. They both run the marathon together again.
Then one day the son asks his father:
"Daddy, will you run the Ironman with me?" (the Ironman is the toughest...it requires a 4km swim, 180km biking and 42km running).
The father says yes again.
This all sounds easy...but check this video."

Thanks! I also got a massage yesterday on my neck. Have been having issues for over 3 months now. Had X-rays, MRI, and such and everything looked good. They said if I continue to have problems then I should go to an ortho guy. I opted for an hour of pain enduring massage to see if that helps. It hurt so good =) He said ice and stretching so we will see if this does the trick.

3 days =)

That's incredible. I forget the name of the organization that sponsors, or works with teams like that - there was a father/son racing together at my first race last year, and it's really incredible to witness. Helps to put some of our aches & pains in perspective, don't you think?

I guess I wasn't done being MIA.  I will start my training in a couple of weeks.  It's an 11 week program which I hope will be enough.  Foot is still pretty sore on some days, like yesterday.  But I go to get my orthotics today and I know that will help.

I am still going to a trainer twice a week which is mostly core and strength training.  I haven't lost much weight since I've been going but that's my own fault.  I fell off the nutrition wagon a couple of weeks ago but am back on.  Even though I haven't lost much weight with the trainer, I can definitely see where I'm toning up.  But for the whole year, I'm down 14 pounds

Jaime1017 - 2011-03-10 10:07 AM Yes this is my first Tri.

my 1st race last year it was about a 100 degrees (no kidding), with a lake swim featuring killer pond grass (lake seaweed) that would grab at you like in a cheesy B horror flick, and i had bursitis in my hip to boot....and holy canoli, it was  still so much fun! crossed the finish line with my 11-year-old daughter by my side yelling "go mom!" and i cried like a baby i was so stoked at the end. it was awesome.Smile

You have friends racing with you?
