Tires exploding in transition due to change in temps is a bit of a triathlon urban myth. Someone on SlowTwitch did a study of the effect of temp. on PSI and pretty much showed that temps don't nearly change enough under even extreme conditions and you would need to have your tire pumped up to some absurd level to have that happen. I would suggest leaving your tires a touch under inflated relative to what you normally do simply due to the chip seal on the roads. A few PSI less will provide a smoother and more efficient ride. New user 54 St. George | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread 3Aims, I raced IMSG with Corsa Evos last year with no issues and will do the same this year with the addition of latex tubes. Great places to eat in SG:- Pizza/Pasta Factory and Benja Thai are both on the run course just below Diagonal on Main St. Cafe Rio has excellent fresh mex and is within walking distance of finish line 4 blocks up on St. George Blvd at about 400E. CodRed, I swam out at Sand Hollow last Monday the 12th. Posted temp was 50. Managed to stay in the water for 40 minutes. It was definately cold. Wore swim cap over neoprene cap, and booties. Poured hot water into suit before getting in. Initially very painful for hands and face until numbness set in. Will be heading out again Friday afternoon. Air temps are forcasted to to be in the mid-70's by end of this week. Water will warm quickly with those temps. It is warmer now than it was at this time last year. I recommend that you go out late afternoon if you can. KStater, Bryan is right on the tire pressures in regards to the chip seal. Lower is better. Most of us here run about 110 pounds in our clinchers. Higher than that will make for a very rough ride and higher rolling resistance. I think a lot of the flats are people that overinflate their tires. High pressure does not work well on this course. I once had a mountain bike tire that was inflated to about 35 lbs explode from sitting in the sun. Don't know if road tires would behave any differently. Most people deflated their tires when leaving bikes in T1 Friday and pumped them up race morning. I wouldn't leave fully inflated tires sitting in that heat on asphalt for any period of time. Better to be safe than sorry. Busy day on the run course yesterday (Sunday). There were at least 30 people running the course. |

Ive had lots of good luck with Contenintal GP4000s tires, used with Mr Tuffy liners & good quality non-light weight tubes.. I ride alot on the streets in Los Angeles & there are tons of potholes, glass etc.. I also ride a lot at night and in remote areas and not worring about flats is important to me. Its very rare that I flat, the only one I can remember off hand was last year during a 20+ hour 285 mile ride from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for interbike. Some guys had up to 7 flats or more in our group. I only had 1 but it was at night while riding the shoulder of I-15 where there was tons of sharp debris we had to dodge. I also did very hot century rides last year in Moab & Vegas & high altitude up Mt Evans, CO never heard of heat or altitude causing flats, I wouldnt worry about it. On Friday I'm going to ride a two-looper and then I would like to park my bike downtown and do a one-loop run. Since I'm staying with a friend at Entrada I won't have a place to stash my bike while I'm doing the run. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe a bike store or something. |

Expert 1258 Marin County, California | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread Yesterday I had one of 'those' rides. It was 34 degrees out and like everyone at this point feeling tired. And looking down the barrel of a 120 mile bike. Got rolling hoping to physically warm up, hit the first climb 3 miles in and it just clicked. The entire ride just flew by, strong, solid and even paced. No where did I 'push the pace' since the plan was a slower than race pace goal. During the last 10 miles I kept asking myself if I could drill out a mary after this and my only thought was 'BRING IT.' The last 3 miles I pushed out some sprints. I think I had a stupid grin on my face the entire time. All the hard work is snapping into place. 124 miles, 6514 feet of gain, 7:04. That :04 was the only 'bummer' of the day. I hope every one has one of these rides in this coming week, its definitly a nice mental boost. |

I know I sometimes get lost in the fatigue, soreness and trainings that just feel one on top of the next at this point in my build and getting tossed a bone really helps my focus for the next big push before taper. |

Surprise, surprise, but Bryan was right. Here is part of the reply I received from WTC this morning: "Thank you for your email. We will be offering PowerBar’s Ironman Perform drink, GU Gel, and Bonk Breaker bars – in addition to the other standards (cola, soup, pretzels, etc.) on both the bike and run courses." |

Extreme Veteran 494 Olympia, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread A logistical question for you St. George vets. Having T1 in a different place than T2 and the finish is new to me. I'll be there solo without anyone to haul stuff for me so I'm wondering how they work the bags. Will they just bring our T1 and race day clothes bags to the finish and we can pick them up there? If so, they will be there by the time we finish, yes? If that is correct, I assume we just need to make sure to get everything into those bags after the swim since everything else will be with us at the finish. Are my assumptions correct? Thanks, Brad |

I'm on my way down to St George today and I was going to 2loop ride/run Friday and run/swim Saturday, but maybe I will reverse that if there is a group that is doing that. And if so, was wondering if you have a room for one more in your caravan out to the reservoir (although I'm out at Entrada). I would bike out, but I don't dare leave my bike unattended. For some reason my mobile has trouble logging on to BT you can email [email protected].
