Nice Race Report. My first and only ocean race was last Novemeber, and there were a GAZILLION (or what seemed like that many) jellys. I grew up in New Mexico, and live in the midwest, so there is no ocean swimming in my background. I freaked out, when I saw those things. On the plus side, I am usually a terrible swimmer, but there is no greater motivator in using good form, than a bunch of jellys in the water and ended up with my best swim ever.

I have a question. Now that I have my heart rate monitor, I am not sure what to do with the information I am getting. I set my personal information in it and it guess it just automatically set my training HR zones as 109-142.

I have used it once now on Sat. On the bike I had to work pretty hard to keep my heart rate in the 120's, which surprised me because I really feel like I have had a good workout and I sweat like crazy. On the cadence counts we do I am usually very high, sometimes I am higher than everyone else. We do sprints, one-legged drills, hills, and other really hard drills. I guess I just thought it would be higher than that as hard as I work.

On the run after my HR was in the 150's most of the run, so out of range. Some of this was hills but some flat too. I was not running full out just easy pace.

Does this mean I need to run slower or less hills and work out harder on the bike or does it mean I am in good shape as far as the bike but not as good with the run and I need to work harder on the run? Or none of the above?

Thanks,

Jan

Jan,  Read this.  It explains it better than I ever could.  Also, my LTR is about 8-10 lower on the bike than on the run.

Good luck, and yes, it is painful.  It is supposed to hurt though, right?

Lmao!!!!!!! I have a friend who used to live in Alaska, she was worried about the creepy crawlies in Australia and I said to her, yeah and its like you don't need to worry about bears or moose or bobcats or wolves where you live!! When she went horse riding they used to have to take a loaded shot gun for protection from the wild life!!! Hahaha at least down under our wild life is polite and gives you a warning before it attacks! Except maybe the crocs, but there are none in Victoria so you can feel safe if you come to visit me Jan!! The wildest thing I see is a cranky mumma duck at the lake on my run. LOL!

Thanks Jon and you are right, it is supposed to hurt. Love it though. Is there something wrong with all of us? I will look at the information you sent me the link for, thank you so much.

Simone, the worst creatures around here are the people and the dogs. Terrible to say but even though this is a very active community, people in cars do stupid things when they see a cyclist on the road. And I love dogs but I have been attacked by a big dog when running and now big dogs scare me. I carry pepper spray both on the bike and when I run. I wonder if pepper spray would work on jellyfish? (lol, not in the water, silly me)

There is snow and ice on the ground here and I need to run!! Last year I ran regardless, even used snowtracks last year in the deep snow but I can't face going out there this year so far.

Best workouts to all of you!

Yeah our neighbourhoods are rife with motorist stupidis also Jan, which is why I like taking the quiet country roads on rides. Thankfully Bendigo is relatively small so you don't need to ride far to get out of heavy traffic, still you have to pick your times.

I have my first training season with the tri club tomorrow morning at the pool, can't wait. Then after that I'll have my first run with them the following Monday. The coach is lovely and she has competed in tonnes of Ironman events including IM Kona, so I'm really excited.

I found out yesterday too the next race is slightly longer cause it's the club championships so that's an extra challenge to work towards!

Hope everyone is having a great week and training hard!

Finally logged my official race report and times if anyone is interested in having a look. Also had my first swim session with the Tri club this morning. It went really well and I got some great feedback. Looking forward to my first strength/speed run session with them on Monday night (better remember the bucket!). :P

Everyone else has been quiet on here lately, hope training is going okay and you are not all sick!!

I think we are hitting that point in winter when everyone starts to get a little, or a lot, sick of the short, cold, gray days. All we can do right now is live vicariously through you guys in the southern hemisphere. Awesome on the swim. It's amazing what a little outside observation can do to help you. Good luck Monday.

just got home from my cruise, got barely any workouts in, the running track on the ship was 11 for 1mile and always very slippery and the treadmills in the gym were basically ment for walking, any speed over 5mph made them studder (made me sad, i tried to get in training) spin bikes were reserved for spin class, got a 90min ocean swim in grand caymen b4 a hugeee wave knocked off my googles back in the groove tomorrow

I agree Jon, hard to stay motivated this time of year, but glad to hear about someone's racing. I must say though that I am staying motivated by reading what I can. My wife posted on her facebook yesterday that there must be something wrong with me because I put down the new Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue to read Triathlete magazine.

On my way to work this morning, the spring on my garage door broke so I had to call a guy to fix it. We have all of our race bibs and medals from past races hanging on the wall. He saw them and seemed really interested and got to talking about racing. Come to find out he was a U.S. olympic silver medalist in cycling. Very cool guy, you just never know who you'll meet.

I have been reading up a lot lately on nutrition, specifically metabolic efficiency training. In short, it's teaching the body to use more fat for fuel than sugar. There is a product out now called Generation UCAN which is billed as a "super starch".  My wife bought it for me for valentine's day. (That's true love). Very expensive, $25 for 6 packets plus shipping. BUT, the good thing is you avoid the spike and dives of taking in high volumes of sugar which also comes the highs and lows of insulin. So basically you are maintaining a very even blood sugar level while burning more fat for fuel due to lower insulin usage. Also avoiding the GI distress that gels and the like tend to cause during long training/racing sessions. Like I said, I've been reading a lot about it lately, and I'm really excited to use it. It will be hard to break away from the norm of high carb loading during endurance periods, but am more than willing to try especially if it helps with my beer gut.

Hope all is well with everybody. Keep posting your training and race reports.

Roger.

Finally bought my first wetsuit.  Its a used, full-sleeved 2XU.  According to sizing chart, I should have plenty of room but couldn't zip it over upper torso yesterday.  I'm not big or even all that muscular so I'm a bit frutrated thinking the size may be too small.  Its a MT and I'm 5'11' and around 170 lbs, well within the middle of the size range.

i've heard of people spraying Pam or using bodyglide all over the torso and arms/legs to ease into the suit easier.  Maybe I'll try that.  Anyone have any suggestions or advice?  It sure didn't seem like the zipper would ever close and I got frustrated and gave up trying.  I'd hate to get a larger size and find out its too big.  (I realize how important it is to try these on before purchase but I got too good of a deal on ebay - worst case scenario I unload it again and buy another).

it feels "too" tight the first few times but its supposed to feel that way, not sure if yours falls into this category, maybe just try to get it on, get some1 to zip it. so you can get the feel of it

Jaelin is right. Most people can't zip up their own wetsuits. First make sure it is pulled up as high in the crotch as possible and high up on the arms for shoulder movement. Have someone help you zip it up. It will feel awkward at first. That is why you should get used to swimming in it before you race in it.

Ha!  I went on a cruise last October.  The treadmills worked great but we were going around a hurricane in the Gulf so it was very choppy.  Let's just say it's a good thing the treadmills had rails on the sides!!

I'm on my tapper before the Fort Worth Cowtown, my second and last HM of 2012.  So far the weather looks like 64 deg F, 5 mph wind, and sunny!!  After which, I'll rest for two weeks then start my triathlon training schedule for the remainder of the year.  A sprint in April, Olympic in June, and I'm looking at a 70.3 in Nov.  Let the real fun begin!!

Roger, I've been reading through some nutrition guides as well.  Being a skinny "hard gainer" and mostly weight training/sprint type athlete in the past, this endurance eating is all new to me.  Dr. Philip Maffetone really is a good read but he can get deep, I even have to take notes at times, lol.

I hope everyone is doing well and keeping a good balance between family, friends, work, and training.  Look out, Spring is on the way!!

Haha I went on a cruise around the Pacific Islands in May last year with every intention of doing a workout every day while I was away. Day 1 = success. Day 2-7 = fail! Couldn't get motivated and the gym wasn't all that flash. I know that's no excuse, but I really couldn't be bothered. Too relaxed.

I too am a hard-gainer and never really had much success gaining muscle mass. Now in tri-training I tend to drop a lot of weight. I've recently started using a product called "BSC Rapid Growth". It's a protein powder but with around a 2.5:1 ratio of carbs to protein, so it is great for recovery. I find it very difficult to eat large quantities of foods, so I find these supplements a great help for me. I especially use them as a post-workout recovery drink.

However I am totally of the opinion that these should be supplements, and not staples in the diet. The rest of your diet has to be pretty good before you start using stuff like this. It is not an excuse to skip your other meals to get these liquid meals.

I've just come off what I think is my biggest week of training ever, and I'm feeling pretty good. Looking forward to enjoying a recovery week this week.

Keep training hard everyone.

Hi everybody! I have been out of town and trying to catch up now.

I went on a cruise quite a while ago now when I was running and doing step aerobics-no thoughts of triathlon then but had similar scenario. The "workout room" was only a pully station where you can do you lats and chest(I'm not a weight-lifter). There was no way to run on that ship outside, although they said you could when I signed up for the cruise. You would have to jump over people in their lounge chairs. I was excited about the aerobics class but it was in a dining area where the tables were bolted down and everybody had to find a place in between tables and then try not to fall over them. Also every time my feet came down the floor was in a different place! The water was choppy. At least if I ever do that again I will know.

I had a killer workout with the tri team on Sat. We did a Spinervals DVD, then went for a run, did another Spinervals and another run! Fun!

And, (as you all know by now, I have to write a book) I have to rave on Kansas City since some of you are from that area. Met my husband there(he is working in Kansas for a few weeks) and we loved the jazz, the food and the people! (I'm from St. Louis so we always go there for big city life) KC is going to be the place of choice now! We danced for about 4 hours! And that was the same day as the killer workout. Yesterday I could hardly move my legs.

Swim today and brick workout today, parent care tomorrow, run Wed, brick Thurs, swim and maybe run on Friday and another killer workout with the team Sat. Let's see if I can meet my goals.

Monty, you have quite wonderful goals for this year! Good luck with getting ready for that HM!

Ok, I will shut up now.

Best workouts to you all!

Joe, did you manage to get into your wetsuit okay?

Jan, great to hear the training is going so well, keep it up!!

I am having a sh*t week. I had Sunday as my scheduled day off and all day I felt really ancy and full of energy and wanted to train, but I forced myself not to. I had a feeling something wasn't right and then Monday I woke up feeling like the world had caved in on me and I just couldn't function at all (they don't call it manic depression for nothing!). I ate a fair bit of food yesterday, fruit, yoghurt, chicken, potatoes, veggies, almonds, hoping it would give me a lift, but nope so I had to cancel my first run with the Tri club. It's hard to explain why, but forcing myself to train when I feel like that isn't a good idea, particularly if it is an important session, I just get frustrated with myself and spiral even further downwards and I hate being around others when I'm like that. I was disappointed but reminded myself there is no rush, I'm in this for the long haul and have plenty of time. I was hoping to wake up today feeling a little better but no such luck. I am going to see if I can head to the pool later tonight for just an easy chill out swim. Something about being in my own little private bubble under the water seems to help sometimes.

I hope everyone else is having a good week and feeling happy and injury free!

Hey everyone!  Lots going on this week!  Congrats on the high volume week Stuart and enjoy the taper Monty!

It's Family Day here in Canada - an excuse for a long weekend in what is normally a blistery cold period but it's been unusually warm.  We went to our nation's capital with hopes of skating the canal - the World's largest outdoor skating rink - but the warm weather caused thawing and the refreeze screwed it up so no skating.  Still a good long weekend!

The past weeks have been a bit stressful as I have been wrapping up tasks on my old job and start a new one tomorrow.  But more stressful is the state of my legs - so painful - very tightly wound and nothing seems to improve the situation.  Has me feeling a bit panicky as I start ticking off the weeks til my HIM and yet feel as though I haven't had any solid workouts to speak of.  Muah!!!

I think too this stress has added a few pounds to the waistline   Fresh start in a new routine tomorrow (I hope!)

Simone your training looks pretty solid so don't be too hard on yourself.  Break it up in to little blocks and celebrate when you accomplish them.  Dust the missed ones under the carpet - no use fretting.  Soon you'll see the light again!

Hi everybody!

Back at work after 4 days off. Jaelin, you are so motivated! You have a lot planned. Good luck and great workouts!

Simone, sometimes I switch my days around. I get busy with my parents and have to change my plan up for the week. Maybe running on your day off if you feel like you need to would be good and then take a different rest day. I don't know if this is something recommended but I know I have to go back on my plans and change things. But I know getting off track can throw people for a loop. Hang in there!

I had to change my plans for this week already. I was going to swim on Monday but spent the morning with my mom, taking her to the doctor and helping her get some things arranged at home. So I ran today and then swam. I did not end up getting much sleep yesterday but got my workouts in! I can't do that too often because sleep is important!

Marcia, is it your hamstrings that are bothering you? I think you have said they have bothered you before. I had a terrible problem with my hamstrings a few years ago. My sister sent me a book-I think it is call Core Lifestyle or something like that. There are some really good stretches in there and other good workouts too. One of the stretches that helped me get over my hamstring tightness and pain was one where you lie flat on your back, engage your quad on one side and lift that leg as far as you can on its own. Then you take a strap(jump rope, resistance band, something, I used the tie from my robe and tied a knot in it with a loop for my foot) and put it around your foot and then gently pull it just a little bit farther than you can raise it on your own. I usually do 10 times on each leg. I can't believe how much that helped-no pain or tightness any more.

Also the foam roller helps a lot.

Take care!
