Veteran 169 Falls Church VA | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up nerdjock - 2012-01-23 4:09 PM I feel good about the running. Goal for this week: maintain run frequency, get back in the pool. Goal for next week: maintain run frequency, increase swim to 3x/week, increase drainer intensity. Perhaps Jorge M's program. Anyone do that? I've heard great things about it. Started it before and it was great. Dropped off because one of my buddies told me he did it last year and peaked too soon before his IM. I've been waiting so that the timing works. Im working through Jorges winter program, it seems to be going pretty well. Its my first winter training with the powertap, so Im not really sure of what my results would look like without following his plan. I feel like Im working harder than in past years, but I think this is more a result of having power numbers in my face than the training plan. If nothing else, its giving some structure to these workouts, some numeric goals to shoot for, and a lot less of an excuse to skip rides. Its in my training plan to end mid March, so itll be right around the time Im hoping to be back outside and Ill have about 10 weeks before the first big race of the season. |

First bike I got was a used tri bike (that I still race with) and it took some getting used to. Balance for the aerobars was an adventure and combining that with being clipped in to the pedals for the first time, I had a couple of pretty funny falls. A couple months after, I found an old but well cared for road bike real cheap that I put aero bars on for riding in less than ideal weather. It might have been an easier learning curve on the tri bike if I had gotten the road bike first, but if youre only getting one, then Id get the tri bike. Other thing to consider is if youre going to do a lot of group rides, I know a couple of them around here in DC strongly discourage riders with aerobars for safety reasons. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up i show up to group rides with my tri bike and get all the weird looks and then i go and blow up the peloton. but the truth is, i dont do many group rides bec they are dangerous for me with my weak handling skills. if its a group ride i have to be in the front to protect myself and everyone else. but to add to the road vs tri bike discussion, i would say that if money is an issue, and you are not going to be doing a lot of group rides, if most of your training is inside on the trainer, and if your rides are flatter, i would go for the tri bike first. |

New user 124 Watkinsville, Ga | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Gladiador-I started with a roadie. I have done up to an HIM with a roadie (no aerobars). Other than getting some looks, there were no issues (I still passed the people giving me looks on the run). I would go with whatever fits your budget and availability. Once you get the bike, put time in the saddle and work on your engine. While you are riding put some money to the side. By the time you starting get faster, you will have the money for the next step up. |

I bought a used Cervelo at a great price. There is no doubt I could have sold it very quickly at about the same price I paid if I decided I didn't enjoy the sport. I had some experience doing this with high end stereo equipment on e-bay so I was pretty comfortable with the risk. If you are only planning to use the bike for solo training and long distance triathlons I would get a used tri-bike. If you plan to do a lot of cycling in groups and organized rides a Roadie with clip-on aerobars would probably make more sense. In the area I live they won't let you ride in some group rides with aerobars. I do about 90% of my outdoor riding with my roadie. It is a very nice bike and comfortable. It is also better for climbing and descents which are common around the area I live. I still love my P2 and use it almost exclusively for races. I can sit in the aerobars for hours and feel very comfortable. |

Extreme Veteran 849 San Diego | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Who went to the pool today? I did!!! Finally! I really like my masters' team and fellow swimmers, so that was a good reminder. Bummer part of the swim was that it was one hour swim day and I got really bored. Bailed a little early but feel good about getting back in the pool and will be back on Friday. My first bike was a Scott Speedster S30. Love that bike. I did my first HIM on it and multiple centuries. In fact, I'm sending it to my mom in the next few weeks and she's going to use it for tri training. In the fast 18 months or so, though, I've only ridden my tri bike (except on the trainer, where I've been riding my roadie). I figure it's what I'll ride while racing, so it's what I train on. I do lots of climbing and descending and it works just fine. I don't do big group rides, only with my Team Badazz people, most of whom ride tri bikes and we never draft. I'm going bike shopping on Saturday. So excited! I haven't purchased a new bike since 2006. It's time. I'm also going to count calories for a couple of weeks. My weight is creeping up and it's time to nip that in the bud! No junk! |

Veteran 222 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up I was in the pool this morning: My first 2 tri's were with an old mountain bike. Then stepped up to a Fuji Aloha tri bike, which I really still like. Although when I take the Tri bike in for maintainence to my LBS, the keep asking when I am going to upgrade. Not ready yet. |

Veteran 222 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Well, last night I signed up for the Welland 1/2IM on June 24. Will use as a guage to my training for Florida IM. Sounds like a good, comparable race, as it is pretty flat. Only thing that worries me is the swim in the Canal, which they is pretty clean, but who knows.

Jordan and I race this weekend. Wish us luck. We have a good plan. Eat lambchops before, finish with a smile on our face and drink good beer after. I, too, actually am having a great swim month for me. Got my lesson and already hit the 30,000 yard mark. May hit 40k! Its been a while since I got that high. Running toook a hit the last two weeks due to the taper. BLT (blood lactate test) results were in too and I'm holding steady at aerobic threshold but lost 5-10% of my top end for not training it. Its all good. I am raring to go for this season. I also registered for the American TTT in Ohio.Google it if you want to see a nutjob weekend of racing that Triathlete mag called the toughest IM (but its not really an IM-its 4 races over 3 days that add up to 140.6). Keep checking in! I miss hearing from some of the gang. |

Friends from home have done that race the last two years and won the coed division. Sounds like a great time, they tried to talk me into it last year, but I wasnt anywhere close to being able to take that on. And we joked about me and the wife doing it together on a tandem bike so that we would have no choice but to stay together. She wasnt a big fan when she heard about the swarms of bugs on the course. Looks like they arent doing the NC race anymore though, which would have been a little more convenient as far as traveling. Good luck with the ultra. |

I met the designer of my saddle today and she is definitely badazz. She showed me her 2012 line that just came in and I found my kit for 2012. I've been fighting a cold for the past week and have had no energy or motivation the past couple of days. Will get a long run and long bike in this weekend. Good luck this weekend, Slayer! |

Veteran 222 | Subject: RE: THE SLAYER RULES-FULL Up Good article. I would tend to agree, that it is important to understand the feeling of running on "bike" legs, but it's not the main cause of slow runs. They mentioned that many athletes tend to over cook the bike and then have no energy for the run, or they go out too fast in the first part of the run. Learning to pace oneself is more important. In the case of an 1/2IM or IM pacing is super important as that is what is going to get you through the day.
Just back from 2hrs bike ride and 20minute run (off the bike). Yeah, I will still do the brick's as I find it loosens the legs much better than just stretching and reduces the likelyhood of injury (for me anyway). |
